Terminator 4 Salvation: Who's gonna watch it?
« on: May 17, 2009, 09:23:20 PM »
Pretty psyched, after all the development stories and the whole McG being a hack and this movie being poised for failure, it suddenly started to look like some pretty amazing popcorn blockbuster action waiting to hit us in the face.

You watched the trailers, and you know how badass it looks and how Sam Worghinton or whatever his last name is, looks like he's going to own the movie. James Cameron didn't pick him for Avatar just because.

So are you going to watch it in the theater? Europe gets a 2 week delay slapped in the face but hey, unless an R5 comes out i'm going to want to watch this in the Theater first.

Oh, and first review from Variety

Probably opening weekend, and it may not be six months after the rest of the world, like most movies in Japan are. For some reason Japan is super fascinated with anything Terminator-oriented, and it looks like it'll open mid-June.

I liked McG's Charlie's Angels, and as others have pointed out, Chuck doesn't suck. I'm cautiously hopeful.

As someone who thinks the first one is way better than the second this bit from  the review may have been the first thing about this movie that has got me excited:
Quote
Darker, grimmer and more stylistically single-minded than its two relatively giddy predecessors, "Terminator Salvation" boasts the kind of singular vision that distinguished the James Cameron original

Yeah, same here. It's difficult to believe McG is capable of doing something that's dark and gritty; action-packed, sure... but if he's actually made a movie closer to the first, where the best possible outcome was maintaining the status quo where 99% of humanity died, but the alternative is that 100% dies... well, that's pretty great.

Who knows what's going on in Bale's life. Celebrities: who needs 'em? But more so, why do we care what happens if Bale shouts at his mom and sister? Maybe they're horrid? Maybe he's horrid? Who cares?

Bale shouts at a grip or lighting technician or whatever-that-guy-was... who cares? Actors on sets want to do their job, and someone who wasn't doing their own properly gets yelled at. Who cares?

I break it down like this: I like Prince, I think he's a musical genius, blah-blah-blah, but I'd never let him babysit my kids. I'm not inviting Christian Bale over for drinks with his mom and sister, nor am I a lighting tech on his set, so I'm not worried about how he conducts himself.

whatever.  The guy is an emotional trainwreck but I couldn't give a damn.  It's his fans that piss me off more when they excuse his behavior and they're probably sales-nerds so maybe that's a back-handed bitch-slap on them?

The idea of the movie just looks boring as hell though.  I've already seen enough action for this year so I actually now expect a somewhat interesting story when I go to theaters.

I ended up watching Resident Evil 3 in the theater because it was post-apocalyptic, so I really don't have any excuse for not watching Terminator 4.

Actually I do care when famous people that I don't care about are insane.  Not because I care about the actual person but because a lot of people look up to them.  The type of person who would actually forgive an actor's assholeness because they like their acting is probably very shallow and I wouldn't be surprised if this makes studios appeal to an even lower common denominato.  To use the most intellectual trolling language that is possible.

I have interest in seeing it, just not too much.

The only problem I have with Bale in this movie is that it will be all that's talked about surrounding it.  That or comparing it to T1/2.  Doesn't really impact that quality of the movie, just talk surrounding the movie.

I wish Bale would stop doing this boring good guys roles, he looks boring in this movie and in public Enemies.

People look up to them? What are you, a middle aged parent of two young children? gtfo with that

A good deal of Hollywood elite folks are arrogant, disgusting individuals. People don't "forgive" this behavior as much as they simply don't care - if I enjoy Bale in a movie, it's because of the performance. If I don't enjoy Bale in a movie, it's because of the performance - not because he's an asshole. I wouldn't say meh, Indiana Jones sucks because Harrison Ford is a dick on sets.

Well if Bill Gates had a tantrum like that, mac sales would explode.  Being a movie star is a dream job so the public excuses behavior like that.  Even on this forum people justified Bale's attitude, probably more because they wish that they were him than because they think he's talented or whatever.

I would buy a few copies of Windows to see Bill Gates have a f-tirade tantrum at an inept worker. It shows he cares :smug

Also, who knows what goes on during filming. Even experienced directors like Darren Aronofsky came out and said he's seen far worse things on set than the Bale thing. It just so happens that the Bale one became public.

I couldn't care less about Bale, but they were filming behind closed doors and actors can get frustrated too, just like you and I. Maybe he was having a bad day. Point is, that tape shouldn't have come out.

What goes on tour...

I'm going to see it opening night. Haven't done it in a while. I might watch it with brandonh83 if I'm lucky.

Christian Bale, the story about an actor who became a movie star by being upstaged by other actors in every single big movie of his.

The Dark Knight, Terminator 4, Public Enemies, The Prestige, Equilibrium etc

If a product or movie is good, I'll buy it. If I was investing in companies and noticed the management was unstable, or unprofessional or whatever, I wouldn't invest in the company. Different situations obviously.

Would I vote for a diva politician, say if I was in Pelosi's district? Probably because her republican challenger would undoubtedly be worse

It just so happens that the Bale one became public.

What's interesting is that when the incident was first reported, hardly anything was said about it by anyone. It wasn't until nearly six months later when the audio leaked that people got all up in arms about it.

The rotten tomatoes scores aren't very inaccurate in real life.  The text of the reviews seem to all say that the story is lacking more than anything in this movie.

It really sucks that this could kill the Terminator franchise when they haven't really "ended" the story.

I was responding to wrika.  The movie is probably bad if the vast majority of the reviews are negative.

When it comes to numerical scores though, it's stupid because one person's 7 is another person's 8 is another person's 4 is another person's 3 is another person's rental.

It's impossible for anyone to be entertained by any media in an objective way which is why the idea of these sites that track scores is stupid.  However, nearly every positive and negative review is saying that the plot is the worst thing about this movie.  They built up the expectation that it would have a very dark and serious story so if the writing is really that bad, the series will be dead.

One red flag is getting a method actor to play the John Connor  Terminator was always satirical and Bale is physically incapable of saying a funny line.  This is not a role that an actor should "become".

The marketing focused more on the story than the action.  Maybe the critics are disappointed by the false expectations or maybe there's just a lot of crappy exposition.

You know what would have been awesome is if Robert Downey Junior actually played John Connor.  He was the only reason to watch Iron Man.

Meh.

Minor Spoilers

Well the film is better than T3 but it still doesn't even come close to touching the first two. The story is kinda forgettable and in the end pretty pointless. Marcus, while the best character in the movie, just feels thrown in with no real reason or purpose and in the end he's just a completely wasted character. It's like they threw time travel in just for the sake of just having it. I think the most annoying thing in the film to me was Elfman's score. It's the whole Roger Rabbit "Shave and a Haircut" syndrome. The Terminator theme is in there but only 3 notes of it, which he plays over and over and over and... without actually concluding it. Made it feel like a made for tv movie. I did like that the film still had a bit of that road trip movie feel that the previous films had, and thought the T800 battle at the end was ok (CG Arnold wasn't nearly as bad as what I was expecting).

Hollow, pointless, and forgettable. Not good, not bad, just meh.
