I thiiiiink I might play King's Field since I never have. Is it ok to start with 4? I want to ease myself into the jank.

Ancient City is perfectly fine. Theres also Eternal Ring on PS2.

Forgot all about Eternal Ring. Think I'll check that out first actually. Thanks.

If you know Japanese you can play Shadow Tower Abyss, it also has a translation patch you can use on emulator as well.

You should just wait for the patch that fixes problems with the new version.

spending more time with it, Assassin's Creed Unity is not as bad as I heard.  maybe it's because I'm playing it months later on PC and problems were fixed, or maybe it's because I never played past brotherhood.  it mostly just feels like more of 2/bro.  the main assassin missions feel more along the lines of asscreed 1 by giving an open area with different routes to kill the dude.  the controls are still really janky and it does the thing where you want to step off a 2 ft high ledge but your character starts climbing a window twenty feet in the other direction.

It's cool for about 20-30 hours but at some point it gets really tiresome how much filler content there is and how shallow most of the mechanics there are + bugs.  I originally liked it a lot, then less, then it was a job, then I bailed on it without even fully exploring (doing all the optional missions) the bottom half of the map that never gets used.

oh I mainly stuck to the story missions.  I think the memory 13 is free dlc that unlocks early.  the money and equipment from it got me through the rest of it.

Yeah, if you only do the main story, it's a good AC.  The other 70% of the game content ranges from good to piss poor and eventually gets draining just because there's so much filler and it's a 70+ hour game.  If I ever play AC again after Unity I'm only doing the main story.

Finished the main story mode of Batman Arkham CIty. Great game. Fighting mobs is more fun. I also like how the game has pretty even ascend in difficulty, both brawls and the takeouts against enemies with guns get progressively harder. Gunna play more the side missions now. This game didn't really have the Metroid feel of the first game (it was only a feel in Asylum anyways, as it's still was massively guided) and I liked the "levels" in asylum a bit more, but the city made up for that. Liked the riddler Challenges more in Asylum, I didn't like particular those where you have to deactivate switches without missing a switch.
It’s so good.

I enjoyed the Riddler Challenges more in AA as well. There’s so much mobility in AC that just “line up the question mark” is not really compelling gameplay. I think you have to do them all twice for the Perfect Knight Achievement/Trophy. Meh.

There’s also a more compelling argument for the Riddler Challenges in AA:

Hit a weird point in Batman Arkham Origins a few nights ago.  Felt like it was building up to the end of the game, climbing a big hotel one floor at a time and then:

spoiler (click to show/hide)
You defeat Bane and catch the Joker and he gets arrested
[close]

And you're wondering if that's the ending cinema to the game.  Then it goes to:

spoiler (click to show/hide)
Playing as The Joker during a dream talking to Harley Quinn & Batman is fighting with Alfred and being a psychopath
[close]

And you're not really sure where it's going and now I'm following up on the next lead and I have no idea what the game is about now.  This will either be cool (interesting story) or wtf (like story ended and keeps going).

Also, fwiw Origins is fucking hard in a frustrating way.  The battle controls are not tight enough and stealth is kind of iffy in these games and it's fine for the most part, but I feel like Origins upped the difficulty on both by a few multitudes and there's been some frustrating bits.  It's the only thing I don't like about Origins so far.

The level design in Destiny is a major bummer. It's like I've got Halo (but with the power of the PlayStation 3) but I'm stuck in a game that consists solely of levels from Halo that take place on the titular orbital superweapons.

Finally finished Final Fantasy III DS after slacking on it (I was right outside the final dungeon for months). Not much to say really. It is a dated and simple game and as such everything about it was aggressively uninteresting. Picked this up on a whim back in march, and despite the game being so empty I felt compelled to keep playing. Took me 32hrs 45mins to beat and my final party was Black Belt, Warrior, Viking and Devout. Kind of wish I had switched over to Viking sooner as provoking bosses over and over was fun in the last dungeon. Never going to play another rpg from that era again lmao.

I beat Rescue Rangers 2... what began was me showing it to my friends ended with me beating the whole game in one go... Pretty good game though I do like the original slightly better. Very nice graphics and cool boss fights are the highlights. Still working my way through Kirby and the Rainbow Curse too, have most of worlds 1-5 complete (gold medals/diary/all the treasures). Have no idea whether or not I will be able to do all the challenge levels though.

Started playing Mass Effect. Tried to hack in 360 controller support but it didn't feel right at all (the mod doesn't work right) so I have to use M + KB which is slightly annoying as a I take the comfort of a controller over more precise controls in AAA games these days. I mean it's a console port.

Game looks disappointing graphics wise. This was always a looker in screenshots but the textures are really bad and the geometry remembers me of a PS2 game. Compared with something like Arkham Asylum which still looks great today it looks really bad. Only some faces look good in the closeups.

Atmosphere is great from what I played, fantastic music and the german speakers are good too. Gameplay felt kinda simple from what played but that's okay. The side missions in this are boring, correct?

I was unsure so if it is the one with

spoiler (click to show/hide)
The long grass field in a valley up top where one of the two monster tanks appears
[close]

Yeah the last part of it can be a tad hard.

spoiler (click to show/hide)
IIRC, You should deploy a small party up north, a Shock and a Lancer and maybe something else, to sneak through the grass all the way to the tank radiator. The Edelweiss and the core of your force should be used in the south because you're straight up forced into an open skirmish there. You need to flank the tank obviously, and to achieve that you must have enough firepower to keep the infantry support occupied. Also some snipers spawn up top, right ? I'm not sure if you can grenade them or have to use an Order to clean them up quick.
[close]

I'd say the game never gets that much more frustrating than that except for an upcoming chapter where you must deal with some scripted unique mechanics that are not that intuitive. Ultimately the game is a tad too dirigist which hurts its replay value (that and the overly simplistic scoring system)*, a bit of a shame because I think the game could have been much much more, but it's good fun all the way through and there's a lot to do in each mission after the one you are on.

For the DLC, Behind her Blue Flame is the meatier one, but Edy's mission is OK and challenging too. But you are maybe on PC and I don't know if they ported that.

*
spoiler (click to show/hide)
For instance in Mission 14, once you know how it unfolds you will never send again your whole party to invest the building at the center and put a sniper on the roof even though it seems the sensible decision to make, or you will game the system by putting your guys & gals in ideal positions before triggering the script. Kinds of defeats the idea of tactics...

The Last of Us Remastered

Fully completed this last night (ie. platinum + Grounded mode + Left Behind + multiplayer DLC). I'll admit, I went into this with a cynical mindset. Uncharted 2 had a 99.9 metacritic and it received 8000000 GOTY awards and had everyone calling it the bestest game of all time, but I thought it was mediocre at best. I was expecting to feel the same way about TLOU, but it's actually a good game. The only problem is that I've already played The Evil Within, which uses the same "resource management TPS" idea but executes literally everything better (mechanics, enemy variety, level design, bosses, weapons, upgrades, less forced cutscenes/story, no simplistic and repetitive puzzles - I'm not exaggerating when I say everything). That's not really a knock against TLOU; it still has really impressive production values with tons of attention to detail and a far better story than TEW, but as a game, it's just really good. Not great.

And I want to add that the highest difficulty, Grounded mode, is awful. It makes resources extremely scarce, which may sound like a fun challenge, but all it really does is change the game from a good TPS to a sub-par stealth game, since you want to avoid or strangle as many enemies as possible to conserve ammo. Might as well be playing Metal Gear instead since it's way better.

I finally beat it by cheesing the fuck out of it.

spoiler (click to show/hide)
I started the battle with 7/10 units.  I moved 2 lancers behind where tank A spawns, let Alicia do her thing, capture the base, killed tank A easily then called in 2 lancer and an engineer at the camp and save scummed until they took down the tank.

Metro last light is really fun when there's not an eastern european guy opening doors for you.  I wasn't big into 2033 so it's surprising me how much I enjoy this.

one thing is the stealth is so much better.  and because it's all about light/dark and not vision codes, even when you're detected you can shoot out the lights and pick off enemies from the dark without getting into firefight.

At the point of no return in Gravity Rush, just killed the 3 secret bosses and rescued all the travelers. Then I'm gonna play through the DLC.

Also started Mega Man Legends, just beat Teasel for the first time. It's charming but clunky as hell due to being a real early 3D game. Took me some getting used to, but its not SO bad. Wish there was a way to do a quick dodge or something though. I do like the graphic style a lot, the palette used and such.

Just beat The 3rd Birthday. Story was incomprehensible bullshit in the early chapters and had me going :cac, and the level design (art wise) left a lot to be desired for most of the game.. but damn I had a ton of fun. The game's mechanics all worked well and were fun to use (there's Overdive which allows you to "dive" into people's souls at will and take over their bodies, the DNA board which is basically a passive skill pool and an extensive weapon customization system as well). The game doesn't have a lot of enemy/boss types, but the encounters are well designed so that you never feel like you're fighting the same ones over and over. It also helps that the enemies themselves are quite varied and you really have to change up your approach when the game throws a bunch of Snatchers or a well placed Bean or two at you. All the boss fights in the game were fucking great and really forced you to take advantage of everything in your arsenal and make good use of the Overdive system.

The story cutscenes are very high budget and well done, which is probably the main reason why I stayed interested in the plot early on despite the awful writing. Don't get me wrong, the writing stays awful throughout but fortunately the plot goes into over the top anime bullshit mode which, in my opinion, helps the game quite a bit. There are some really badass sections in the latter half of the game (ones involving tanks and choppers) as well as some much needed change in scenery. The ending was equal parts touching and "what the fuck?" and for that I enjoyed it. Finding out what was going on with Aya all along was pretty trippy. I never played the older PE games so maybe that's why I didn't absolutely detest the story like so many fans of the series did.

Great game.

It was a fun portable shooter/rpg. I had no expectations going in and was pleasantly surprised. I really don't see what there is to outright hate about the game from a gameplay perspective. Mechanics work well and the game is only 8~10 hours long so it doesn't overstay it's welcome either.

Musashi is further proof that 32 bit era haters are wrong.

Been replaying Xenogears. I was scared it wouldn't live up to how I enjoyed it in my teens (top 10 RPG for me then) but it really has. I still love it even now, after all these years.

I also got Ys 1 for iOS. I've never beaten it because I've never liked the ram into enemies combat, but here's hoping that changes.

I've mostly really only been replaying jrpgs this year. Been going back to old classics that made me fall in love with gaming (Xenogears) and some that I wasn't big on when they were released (chrono cross) that have exponentially improved in my mind, the older I am. My recent play throughs have really made the case for psx being my favorite system. Not sure what to go through next, maybe Parasite Eve and then maybe Trails in the Sky after that.

Really miss a good jrpg. I used to play at least one new great jrpg a year, but the last great jrpg I played was SMT4 (no I don't think Bravely Default was great, here's hoping the sequel is better).

I had a big realization when replaying XG made me realize that I didn't really fall out love with games, it's just that the games I like are infrequently made. But that's okay, plenty to play in Japanese!

So I'm finally becoming a mack level Spelunky player I think.

Managed to beat the game in 6:13 and unlock the Speedlunky achievement. Super stoked.

Unfortunately not playing any contemporary games  :'( The Sceneman is gonna pick up a new PC soon and hopefully get amongst some new shit. Miss this stinkin' forum too

Gonna fire up the Gamepube tomorrow and play Baten Kaitos Origins as it's probably one of the finest JRPGs ever coded

I'm replaying the ps1 remakes. never tried the later versions of silver star. really I'm ok with never trying them. not interested in any changes/additions they do to the story, and no wd translation would make it feel extra alien to me.

I DID read a let's play of Dragon Song the other day and JESUS CHRIST. like I always heard it was a terrible game but it seems like it'd be on the short list for worst jrpg ever.

Last of Us: Left Behind

Saw this was available as a stand alone dlc for PS4, never played it before.

Storytelling in this one of if not the best Ive seen in a game so far, gameplay is still as tight as ever with some mini twists.

It will be hard for ND to top this.

Remaster looks great, really shows how hampered devs were getting by last gen hardware.
