Yep. My point is, when people think of video game music, they're going to think of games where music is an integral part of the presentation, like arcade games, RPGs, old Nintendo and Capcom games, etc. Nobody gives a fuck about Generic Epic Track 014 in some shitty "cinematic experience" game.

The only decent song I've heard from RDR is "Far Away", and that song never even played in my game. If I hadn't looked it up myself I would've never heard it. The rest is just abmient crap I never even noticed playing in the background.

Sure. If people like the hot new Call of Duty and God of War OSTs, good for them.

Totally agreed, that generic movie soundtrack music oversaturating most games nowadays is so forgettable.

There's a reason why in "best video game soundtracks" thread, people frequently mention stuff like Mega Man 2, Chrono Trigger, the Ys games... and not Red Dead Redemption and Uncharted 2. Yeah this strikes me as strictly a subjective what you like opinion thing. I don't care for that japanese style soundtrack music. Which is a slightly separate debate from whether I like that specific music. In fact I generally don't want to hear full songs while I'm playing as I find it distracting athough there are some exceptions to this rule of course. I want the music/sound/ambient noise as a mood enhancer. Not the main dish.

Japanese games take a different approach and you may individually prefer one method over the other but there are a lot of people who may not agree with you.

What is the argument here?

That RDR music isn't good?

Or that it shouldn't be cinematic Morricone influenced ambient music?

Because the latter is what iconoclast seems to be arguing versus the prior. The latter I don't mind discussing or arguing about. The first is a completely subjective discussion I don't care about.

There is no way I should boot up RDR and hear that track iconoclast posted. My ears would bleed. That's perfectly fine music for Bayonetta or a japanese bullet hell game or something. It's not for an open world western game.

It's not just Japanese games though

I'd say it has more to do with video games slowly becoming bad movies instead of remaining video games. There's no place for music like that in CoD or Uncharted or what have you.

You're just left with forgettable ambiance. And that just goes back to my original point: in games like Mega Man, Doom, fighting games, etc. music is a key point of the presentation. That's not the same case for RDR or Uncharted so it's inherently forgettable.

Yeah this is simply a nostalgia or preference discussion which I'm less interested in. People don't make chip music for games anymore because the majority of people don't want to hear that anymore and the tech isn't limited to just making chip music anymore. I have nothing against that music. Especially for retro style games. But that doesn't mean I want to hear it in Dead Space or the modern games I play. It simply doesn't fit the mood that most people want when they play these games. It's very busy. And it doesn't fit the mental picture they have when they want to play it.

I was just trying to incite Eel a bit when he called the stuff I liked "nostalgic bleep bloop" music :P

Like Iconoclast says, he prefers games to stay as gamey, rather than try to ape hollywood. A lot of people tend to like the hollywood-ization of gaming but there are still a few holdouts who would take rich gameplay mechanics over hollywood flash. And the move from full soundtracks to ambient, with some generic orchestral stuff playing from time to time is another example of games trying to be movies.

It's not a Japan vs. West argument (for once) - I enjoyed Unreal Tournament more than the Halo games due to the music playing in the background during multiplayer... Wipeout wouldn't be the same if it didn't have the soundtrack that it did. The best part of the DKC games on SNES were the soundtracks.

One of my favorite game soundtracks of all time (and maybe still my favorite) is Ridge Racer Type 4. Because the music complements the vibe that game creates (and of course it helps that I also really like the music). That's what game music really is. The music of RDR for the vast number of people who played it, achieved a similar effect for them. Game music should be judged imo on if it contributes to the vibe of the game and what they are going for rather than just whether a person likes that particular style of music.

if it's made with loops from an old Simon game = classic

if it's made with instruments and is influenced by musical history = generic orchestral stuff

so, let's talk generic

how is this generic dick rock (which, by the way, could be plugged into any one of a thousand jrpg battle scenes and no one could tell the difference):

any more suited to a fight scene than this:

answer: one is tailored to the game it was made for

Good music. I don't remember any of it from the game though.

This notion that all game music should be like American idol pop music that I'm humming under my breath the next day strikes me as odd though.

I remember nothing from the music of Dead Space. I do remember it had the best sound design of any game I enjoyed that year though.

Game music isn't just name that tune. Its more about create that mood. Good game music or sound design isn't just about creating songs I listen to on my ipod.

The music in RDR goes a long way in augmenting the tone of that game.  That's really all that's needed from a soundtrack; not whistle-ability or fulfilling a desire to headbang to buttrock in your Ford Taurus.

Yes. I don't need Duke Nukem in Red Dead or Doom in Dead Space. The soundtracks of those games fit what they are going for.

Actually I thought it was a bit weird when the music kind of kicked in during action sequences but different music effects work for different people.

My point in this whole thing generally speaking is that I like music the way its handled currently for most genres. I think sound design has progressed a whole hell of a lot and is actually pretty varied. Japanese games and Americans games probably shouldn't be handling music the exact same since their audiences have different expectations about the music along with different taste.

If you find yourself tearing down talented cats like Bill Elm, Woody Jackson, or Yuzo Koshiro in an argument, it's time to take a deep breath.  Both styles work, it depends on the game and what they want the music to accomplish.  I don't want or need catchy looping tunes in my open-world Western any more than I want or need ambient themes in my character action game.

the games you guys listed earlier as having memorable music are far from being recent

and my age simply means i've had more time to sample different music across the spectrum and learn appreciation for things that i, too, used to casually dismiss as being generic because i, too, used to think i knew everything there was to know about any given subject

i like plenty of different musical genres, i've even grown to appreciate old country music, which you guys would no doubt curl your lips in disgust at like i used to

you're lucky, though, i used to have to hunt down anything which wasn't classic rock or top 40, when it's just a click away nowadays

What's wrong with chip tune music? With a limitation you have to work that much harder to create a desired product. I definitely recall many more memorable game music via chip tunes than any epic soundtrack, but that's mostly because back then there was less emphasis on "epic" games and if possible I'm sure they'd create tunes that'd fit these epic games back then too.

"games in the past had much more memorable soundtracks than the current generic orchestral stuff"

*lists a bunch of 8-bit games with chip tunes

later:

"there are plenty of recent games with memorable soundtracks"

*lists a bunch of current games with generic orchestral stuff

goalposts keep shifting in this discussion, so i'm on to different things now

but you weren't talking about those games earlier, you were talking about games with chip tunes

The first song I posted was from Ketsui (a game that originally came out in 2003, but the version I posted was from 2010). I never said that every current game has a generic orchestral soundtrack... Only most of them do.

The "cinematic experience" games do, to clarify. Which is what I originally said.
