I don't listen to music (any kind) when I screw, for some reason. If I were to pick a song it'd probably be this (not game music):

Last Story seems solid.  Graphics are poop like Wii rpgs, but I think graphics need to be poop in order for jdevs to make good jrpgs.  They seem to get distracted when making pretty graphics.

Controls are kind of funky with wiimote + nunchuck.  Will use the CC next time.  Like Xenoblade and Graces I think they made it for the CC.  There's no pointing (even for FPS shooting stuff) and there's no rumble unless it's just off as default.

Main character is Setsuna F. Seisei, which will take some getting used to.

At the very start where I am you just point in the direction of enemies and your dude auto-fights.  Kind of like an MMO except no wait times between attacks, just one attack after another.  Or you can bring up your bow and it becomes an FPS.  Plus there is cover.  I'm guessing it'll get deeper as it opens up.  Doesn't really feel like WKC, which just felt like an MMO in SP.

that RDR music was so boring

:bow weeaboo gaming

Little King's Story :bow2

Good use of public domain music.  The entire TV rhapsody in blue part was awesome.

oh, and infamous had great music.  Amon Tobin :bow2 another reason why Splinter Cell Chaos Theory was so good.

and yes, Nier, Shatter, Bionic Commando 2009, etc.  A lot of good recent game music out there.  RDR was good too as adding to the atmosphere, to the point where a vocal song feels wrong, but I'd listen to when not playing the game.
actually I'm gonna just stop because I keep thinking about editing and listing more music  :'(

one exception:

I think Eel's point, which has become rather obfuscated, is that music ripped straight from a glowstick-filled rave doesn't really fit in a game where you're wandering around in the Old West fighting cattle-rustlers and banditos, so it doesn't make sense to complain about RDR's soundtrack while simultaneously raving about how totally awesome the soundtrack for the latest 2D schmup is.

That, and there's some false equivalency going here, in suggesting that "not memorable" is the same thing as "bad".

I took a listen to those Red Dead Revolver samples posted above, still kinda "meh" to me... for wild west music I liked the Wild Arms games soundtracks better.

The purpose of a soundtrack is to either compliment or enhance every other aspect of the movie or game, not to be considered "best" when divested of its context.

Yes, I happen to like those schmup soundtracks as well, but plopping them down into RDR is ridiculous. They wouldn't work.

I was joking with that last post FYI. I already said that type of music wouldn't work in stuff like RDR and that RDR's soundtrack fits the game fine. I also don't think it enhances the experience at all because like I said, I truly did not even -notice- any music playing 99% of the time. It's just background noise.

A couple hours into Last Story now.  This is the most low budget janky console rpg I've played since Launch PS2-era rpgs.  The combination of Nintendo probably giving them $10 to develop it on + Artoon's amazing programming ability (hint: that is sarcasm) = wowwwww.  There is absolutely no comparison between Last Story & Xenoblade in terms of visuals, presentation, polish.  XB looks and feels a generation ahead.

But the game seems like it has some heart put into it, so that keeps me playing.  The controls are kind of shitty, even with a classic controller.  Just doesn't feel right.

Graphics are just sooo bad though.  Even for a Wii game :\

One thing that gives me a little hope is I thought Blue Dragoon (the last Artoon + Sakaguchi production) was pretty janky at first too.  So maybe they're stuff is just offputting at first glance until you get used to it.

Ok, so about 3 hours in the game picks up FAST and becomes pretty awesome.  The battle system gets more depth and interesting, the story goes in overdrive, and they actually start using colors in the graphics and try to cram PS3/X360 effects everywhere.

The battle system and dungeons are really really fun.  I dunno if it'll be a good deep & balanced battle system in the long run, but for now it's ridiculously fun and much better than BD/LO's battle systems.  The only negatives are the camera and lock-on kind of suck ass so sometimes you're fighting blindly and just rolling around until you can see shit.  ^^;  But being able to just recruit NPC dudes nearby to fight with you and have 6 person real-time battle parties is pretty awesome.

The game has a lot of mistwalker uniqueness that we've seen in their other games.  I also has some good gameplay ideas like:

-story dialogue/scenes happen as you're moving through dungeons.  FFXIII kind of had this and I thought it was a good step forward to have real-time party talk, but this has real-time MAIN STORY talk while your running or even while you're fighting enemies/bosses.  Keeps the pace fast and exciting without the story bogging down the gameplay.

-First person depth of field CHECKING of events.  Like if someone calls your name it goes into FP and you have a blurry depth of field as you try to find the person and then it clicks when you do and an event scene happens.  It's also used when running around town or sidequests to look around and trigger little events.  It adds a lot to the personality of the game.

-random drops even for chests and it'll tell you if the item is RARE before you even pick it up.  Adds to the loot factor.

-Being able to color your person.  Game became much better when I ditched all the grey/black on the main guy and made him an orange/white surfer.

Now that the game got over its slow/ugly 3 hour intro that jrpgs love to have, the biggest complaint I have is that the music is completely forgettable so far.  Which is a shame since BD & LO scores were really memorable.  Maybe there will be better tracks later.  For now it's more like a movie score and less like melodic tune Uematsu.

Also there's an insane amount of voice work.  Most of the NPCs you can talk to in town are voiced and between talking NPCs and party talk EVERY SECOND OF THE GAME whether you are in dungeon or battle and cutscenes full of voiced dialogue, I don't think I've gone more than 60 seconds in the game without hearing voiced dialogue.

I've bee playing an epic match of Civ V. I research iron only to find I had a 2 spot near me. Looking around the map, I noticed a spot where I could put a city on the coast(for a harbor) and immediately have 10 more iron. But it was close to Caesar's territory. Well, close enough for him to bitch. He has since declared war on me twice. I fended off the first wave and he wanted peace. The 2nd time I stole 5 of his workers. Now I have to contend with his riflemen and I don't have any.  :-\

He may have the last laugh after all.

Yes, play Nier. Or Vesperia.

Got Fist of the North Star today. Game's pretty good so far. Koei basically made a more traditional, linear action game with their usual combat mechanics (although slightly more robust than their Warriors games). Nice cutscenes, decent graphics, japanese voices, lots of gore. I'm happy. I could see this beating DWG2 as my favorite Koei game by the time I'm done.

Last Story really looks like a PSP game.  These were basically the best looking areas in the game so far  :lol

I hope Sakaguchi doesn't retire because even though it seems like it could be a solid fun rpg, it definitely does not seem like the swan song you want to end your career on.

Thinking about it I actually feel kind of bad for Sakaguchi.  He has good ideas and ambitions for rpgs, but Mistwalker has been plagued with seriously the worst programmers of any jrpg dev because of their choice of outsourcing the tech work to Artoon/Feel Plus.  I mean let's look at their track record:

Blue Dragon - tons of framerate drops in battles and tearing
Lost Odyssey - 20 second load time/fight intros to every battle (luckily I hear these days after GAME INSTALL option appeared, its fixed that a good deal)
ASH - extremely slow movement and bad AI/controls made it slow and cumbersome
Last Story - ghetto graphics, some camera/control problems

I almost feel like Sakaguchi's negativity and talk of retirement stems from just being tired of his good concept rpgs being brought down by crappy programming over and over again.

Planescape: Torment would be a better pick, if you could get over the slow start and a few dated gameplay mechanics. You like adventure games, right? It's like cross between western and Japanese RPG and graphic adventure game.

Deadly Premonition isn't really a horror game. There's not one scary moment in it. It's just a cheesy mystery/thriller with awesome characters.

also Oblivion is the worst game this generation. I'm not exaggerating. Avoid it like the plague.

i tried playing planescape: torment once and i could barely get out of the mortuary before quitting bored out of my mind... i know that everyone says it's the greatest game ever but it just didn't click with me not even on the most basic level

my best WRPG shot was baldur's gate and that was a loooooooooooooooooooooong time ago,so long i can barely remember it (mostly i remember that there was an amusing character with an hamster and that a lot of fights were won exploiting the AI in such way like "it won't chase me to the next room where i can rest safely" or "if i walk 2 feet instead of 4 only 2 goblins attack me instead of all of them" think i stopped after some mine dungeon and the last character i got was someone who got turned into a statue)

allright finished lost odyssey with 1000/1000 i was expecting a fanfare,a parade,at least some party poppers but nothing... :(
total GS is now 2470

but anyway a while ago i said i didn't think much of FF4 but maybe i never explained why... the reason for why i don't like FF4 that much it's because ultimately the whole game feels bland and slow which doesn't make it bad in itself but it doesn't make for a good experience either, and ultimately lost odyssey feels like that too

the premise of the main character being immortal was probably the most interessing thing about the game but it's really never used... it's like they went "okay! the main character is immortal! let's hire a good writer to give him a nice backstory and then think of the rest after!" and then they proceeded to write generic plot RPG 2436246# and while it's a pretty standard plot some part of it are cringeworthy namely

spoiler (click to show/hide)
- cooke & mack: GAAAAAHHHHHH i haven't been so annoyed by a character since anise in tales of abyss, they serve no purpose to the plot other than they can sometimes watch the camera and go "BLA BLA BLA MOMMY!" or so that kaim can go "OH NO MY GRANDCHILDREN!" they are basicaly drama mcguffins, the worst kind of stunt a JRPG can pull

- speaking of kaim,i understand that he's supposed to be the stoic silent hero but he's barely there! i'm pretty sure that any other character other than sarah or that at least jansen has more lines than him, compare that to lighting, she might comes off as bitchy and unfriendly but at least you notice she's there!

- the way gongora is introduced as the villain is a little ridiculous, first you meet him and he says he has a relationship with kaim... okay... then later he's seen giving a pearl to jansen so he can erase kaim memory, maybe there is a good reason for him to want kaim without his memories? then he stages a fake attempt assasination toward tolten... i'm not even sure why since tolten already loves him to death so.... then he raises some evil doll while doing an evil laugh and that's where you start losing your shit, then he murders the leader of the council... how does he do it? does he stabs him? does he uses henchmans? an unfortunate accident? no he does so by way of FUCKING GIANT EVIL SNAKE! good thing the council leader didn't know how to summon a giant mouse (or a giant eagle) or his whole plan would have been fucked! then kaim regains his memory and at that point he's pretty much teleporting around donning a black armor... it's like they had to raise some villain quotient with each following cutscene! heck i'm pretty sure that after that there was at least a scene where he ties someone to a railroad but it got cut for some reason.... again compare that to FF13 villain, you don't even see him before half of the game and after the hero meets him,he doesn't pull off any evil laugh, nor does anything particulary villanous other than long-winded speech and the idea you get of him is "crazed god-like entity" which is not very good either but it's still more competent than "the villain"

- the game tries to make a big deal out of when kaim daugther die and i don't really have anything bad to say about that... but then right after that it sends you to a fetch quest! and then it does it again! and after that you play a funeral minigame! it's just kind of ridiculous and i don't think i would have been able to use the words "funeral" and "minigame" together in a sensible context

- lastly the whole bit when gongora takes control of uhra is stupid stupid stupid stupid,he just goes on a stand and goes like "KING TOLTEN IS DEAD!" and nobody bat an eyelash, making a coup d'etat in the lost odyssey universe has to be the easiest thing ever! this is twice as stupid when tolten returns home and everybody is like "THERE IS A TRAITOR THAT LOOKS EXACTLY LIKE OUR PREVIOUS KING!" and becomes thrice as stupid when you consider that he had only a thousand chance to kill tolten but he didn't because.......
and it becomes four time as stupid (DERP COMBO X4) when you realize that the guy has the power to make puppet that look like real people so all he had to do was to make a puppet that looked like tolten!
[close]

ultimately i have seen some game diddle with the concept of generation passing (like saga frontier 2) and i'm pretty sure that premise alone would have made a muuuuuuuch better plot, maybe you could have it so that your party of immortals would be permament but your mortal character would change over the course of generation, that would be how you bank on such a premise

in fact some of the stories told in the thousand year dreams describe much more interessing places and event than what actualy traspires in the game,as i already said scattering them trough the game wasn't a very good idea (you are there searching for treasure, when suddenly *WHOOOSH* you trigger a dream, and after the dream you return to your treasure hunting... it just kind of break the pace) and even if they are really well written, quite a bunch of them boil down to "kaim meet someone, that someone dies, but kaim will never die!" the thing i found especialy puzzling is that you have 3 other character to work with and one of them is a freaking pirate! really? the pirate only deserve a small bit of backstory? the one about ming was cool so why we couldn't have more about like that?
spoiler (click to show/hide)
tough it basicaly goes completly against the character that the actual plot feeds you
[close]

but anyway so far i bitched about the plot but i still said nothing about the game, himuro said that he love the customization that's available in lost odyssey but personaly i think that the game never reach the sweet spot about it,when you start the game your character barely have any skill slot avaiable or any skill to choice other than "steal" and "attack up when critical" which barely make any impact in battle and by the time you reach the end of the game, your character have 30 skills slot and in fact you have so much of them that you don't know how to fill them and your character are also now immune to every status effect and also to every spell and they have 9999 HP and in fact are so powerfull and broken that they make the 8-hit wonders from FF5/FF6 almost reasonable

and yea that's a pretty apt comparison, when you reach the game end,the game gives you a boat and then it makes you go into lot of places where you fight not-so powerfull optional bosses for reward you really didn't need (other than for that very particular broken power-up) in really boring looking place's (i swear between the story dungeon and the optional area's i counted at least 4 caves) one of them even hold the best white magic and the best black magic! sounds familiar? too bad they didn't put it inside a tower!
it wasn't exciting when they did it in final fantasy and it's sure isn't exciting here either

some of the system used to spice-up the battle feel half-assed,adding timing works in game like shadow hearts and paper mario because it's added to EVERY action of the game, when it works only when pulling off normal attacks,it just feel like a tacked on addition... the CG idea too could have been interessing but between the fact that the game is piss easy and that your back row probably holds your reject character (or maybe it would be best to say your reject mortal's) that idea too never comes into full circle...
the fact that battles just feel slow between loading times and running animation just add to the blah

tl;dr version

it wasn't bad but it was very averagish, easy, generic looking and it had sort of a stupid plot,in short i feel a little bad when i think that i skipped disgaea 3 and atelier pantsu to play this and this also put's blue dragon pretty much on the bottom of the list of 360 game i'm going to play

I think you should be GLAD the game wasn't offensive. JRPGs are never good, they can only be bad. So the fact LO is middling is a positive.

Playing Halo Reach on Heroic.  Seems like the best Halo campaign yet and I'll probably get into MP once I'm done.  Haven't felt like playing an online FPS in years.

Has anyone played Halo 2 on PC?  I wanna run through the campaign and get cheesemints.  Can you use a 360 controller?

Blue Dragon is better magus, you might like that.

BD has a fun story and world to explore.

Magus cant get the hard patch, so it might not be worth bothering since the game is a cakewalk otherwise. And Magus will gripe about Shu not giving up every 10 seconds

Real talk: I got stuck on the robot boss in BD whilst using the hard patch. I couldn't get past that bit so I traded the game in.

I feel like getting the game again on the cheap so I can replay it on normal this time. Gotta make use of the mint condition Prima guide I still got from before.

No, not that I know of. Yes it does don't listen to that lying whore. But I have Halo 2 PC. Not sure that it supports online co-op though, homie. Not sure.

Because you wanted to set yourself up for disappointment

If you took the time to write that post about Lost Odyssey story... you are gonna flood the board with Resonance of Fate

RoF story is better, you just have to read wikipedia since the plot is missing from the game!  ^^;

Tiesto, what's the best gaming song, if you ever used one, you screwed one of your fat chicks to, got head to, etc.

I don't listen to music (any kind) when I screw, for some reason. If I were to pick a song it'd probably be this (not game music):

If I could choose one song to get head to it would be this (game music)

okay so what's the difference between charge speed and charge acceleration? if i understand correctly the charge speed is "how long i take to lock on the first time" and charge acceleration is "how long i take to put multiple lock on for added effects" ?

i swear this game is so confusing.....

Yeah I think that's it.  Acceleration is what matters because you want to get max charges (eventually 100) as soon as you can since it means more damage for MG and more likely stun for HG.

Just make sure you're always upgrading your guns by attaching more parts.  If you don't upgrade the game is hard, if you do upgrade and do all the sidequests each chapter and the arena the game is cake.  If you do something between those two the game is normal.

okay... i don't get what's good about stun, all i understand is that i get back 1 crystal and the enemy stops from acting for like 3 seconds at best

also i still don't understand one thing... is the game going real time or not? sometimes it feel like the enemies do wait for me to act and sometimes it seems like i get hit no matter what

and as a last question, while being in a dungeon is there really no way to hard save or change your equipment? that kinda sucks....

Stun is important when enemies start killing you in 1 hit.  Plus as you get deeper in breaking body parts will be essential and the higher the HG charge the more likely that will happen.  Or if you get hawkeye accessory which instead of breaking, KILLS a body party, then HG high charge becomes essential for some bigger enemies.

Game is turn based.  After you move, the enemies will have their turn.  Stun helps prevent this.

No you can't change your equipment or save during a dungeon.  Dungeons are all like 10 mins short so it's not a big deal.  The escort dungeon in chapter 3 is the only sucky one.

i was getting confused because sometime i would get shoot in the face while acting and sometime not,i seems to understand that this happen only if the enemy are targeting the character i'm controlling but if they are targeting another character, their attack won't carry until i either attack myself or switch character with B

anyway i played up to chapter 3 and while there isn't a lot of plot the actual game is really cool, the battle system is original,it looks decent (tough the character looks a little creepy and why everybody is blonde? but i love the monster design, especialy the thugs who look like the villain from raider of the lost ark) and the customization system kinda reminds me of that gundam rpg on ps2 nobody played,i guess having a liking for gun-fu also helps

the only thing i really don't like is the arena, having to repeat the same fight 3 times to advance to the next rank is already annoying but having to do it 7 times more for the achievement is even more blah-tastic :/

also seriously bore i've seen you guys link that "vashyron dance" video several times but not this?

All of the cutscenes in RoF are awesome. Everything about the game is awesome actually. Tied with Nier for RPGotY 2010. Make sure you fully explore all the dungeons too. Fairly early in the game you can find a second machine gun which is obviously extremely helpful.

I just ignored the arena until I was right at the final boss. You don't need to bother with any of it unless you want the achievement.
