IMO Killer 7 is one of the few legitimate candidates for a game with elements that could be considered 'art'. Just due to the depths of the concepts that K7 explores. Fuck I love Killer7

Killer 7 ownssssssss. Political story commenting on the state of the Japanese government, the differences between Japanese and western ideals and how they clash meets a twisted story revolving around murderers and assassins and all around mind fuck schizophrenia psychosis.

Sounds better than Mass Effect already. Eat that nerds.

I thought the way it manipulated the player's emotions, or at least mine, was pretty good. It set itself up nicely. You start alone in an isolated facility, you have no clue what happened to the others but there are hints. You go through trials and level by level as GlaDOS guides you from stage to stage, and abruptly tries to kill you out of nowhere. You realize that you're not the first person she has done this too. I didn't really expect it, and going up until the final levels of the game, it's pretty fucking awesome with a great final confrontation as you finally leave the building.

Sounds like a ripoff of System Shock 2. :smug

I like Team Ico games. Ico is alright but I love Shadow of the Colossus, mostly for the boss rush, but also for the vague storytelling I was talking about before. I'll be last to submit SotC as proof that games are "art" though. Ptooey.

But sometimes the storytelling can be so vague that it's almost nonexistent.  I felt that was the case with SOTC, especially since there was no character interaction for almost the whole game.  How much can something be credited for telling a good story when most of it is created from the viewer's own imagination?  Imo, SOTC left far too much to the gamer's imagination to be considered a good story.  ICO did a much better job of balancing mysteriousness with telling a coherent story.

There's a tendency with the mainstream to overemphasize the importance of a plot in storytelling but at the same time, wannabe art connoisseurs also tend to undervalue a tight plot with a proper ending.

Agree with a lot of this. And I prefer Ico to SOTC for those exact same reasons although I'm not saying someone can't feel the opposite.

I like a game that allows you to fill in the blanks because that is somewhat rare by comparison in today's industry but not every game should be like that. In fact the majority of games shouldn't be like that.

It's like how lots of movies come out after Pulp Fiction that essentially tried to copy that plot structure even though probably most movies shouldn't do that. It's nice when one does though and pulls it off but there is also nothing wrong with a linear time structure narrative.

I dug Limbo because I essentially made up my own story to the game as I was playing. I think that's neat that they didn't overly layer a story on top of that game but I don't think every game should be like that. And actually creating a story or characters I care about is an equally important skill.

Problem with some games at the moment is that they are trying to ape other more mature mediums. Namely, movies, as they are the closest in form. But where movies are a passive experience, games are all about interactivity.

Now there is a problem, I feel, with your game if it relies too heavily on lengthy exposition or monologues.  Games shouldn't start with lines like "In a world devastated by war..." or "In the year 2057...". Instead they should immerse you into the culture of their worlds. Don't tell me what it's like, let me experience it. The story should not stall the gameplay, and immersion is a big part of the gameplay,  at least for a game trying to tell a story.

This is why say, L4D gets alot of praise in that department. It throws you into its world and plays to a games core strength of being an interactive medium. You piece together the story by interacting with the world.

Story driven games are mainly about the journey you take with your on-screen persona. A major part of the appeal of something like LA Noire for me is the fact that I get to take this fellow, Cole Phelps, up from traffic cop to homicide detective. And he only got there because of my actions. That gives me satisfaction in a plot driven game.

How did SotC not have a tight plot and a proper ending? It has a fantastic ending. What games are you even referring to.

If you felt SotC's story was non existent, then I am sorry. You go through a sacred land killing a bunch of baddies. Some of them are even cute! For the sake of your own selfish desire to see your lover alive again. Meanwhile, while you kill them, your skin gets paler and paler, your hair whiter and whiter. The game doesn't mention this, but you can certainly SEE that killing these things is taking away your humanity and your soul. But you can't stop this, the game doesn't mention this, and you have to keep going. The difference being that if this was a movie, it's not me playing a part. But since it's a game, it's on ME. By end game, you have lost everything, tricked by a god, as you transform into a shell of a human, a demon all for one woman's love. I find it to be a pretty satisfying story.

It just seems to me Hollywood gamers just can't get the appeal of simplicity because they want to validate the medium and make it like it's on par with film or some bullshit. And yet through that simplicity is better than any story offered by some faux Hollywood game with barely any cutscenes.

I've been playing Ghost Trick and you alter the story through the gameplay while the cutscene is playing. No sitting there waiting for my turn. No, no, no sir. I alter the story, continue the game, and solve puzzles while the cutscenes are playing in the game itself.

Actual player interactivity will always top cutscenes.

And this is why the latest GTA's annoy the fuck out of me. Stop talking, shut the FUCK UP, overwrought character melodrama and pathos is not going to make me LIKE you and the story you are in. I preferred the more simple take of the ps2 GTA's. Only a few lines is said, but the stories tend to be more open-ended and left to be interpreted rather than being some stupid overly long narrative.

TLDR: I hate hand holding.

i saved the blue scientist girl and uh that's all i have done so far... going around with the dune buggy is fun but the random planet you explore are just a big mass of nothing,i'm not sure why people are ok with that

i feel a little frustated by combat, there seems to be a lot of time when i instantly died, the boss at the end was especialy cheap,he would dash toward me and after that i was dead no matter if i tried to escape,or gun him down,or what,in the end i won because for some weird reason he decided to not do that, also discovering that there are no checkpoint and that i have to save manualy to create one wasn't pretty :-\

also i got all these neat abilities but i don't have any idea how to use them (maybe that also explains why i have trouble with combat...) mmmmm... what else, well it still feel like a generic space shooter instead of the epic ZOMG rpg everybody says, the various alien race are nice (i booted off the 2 human character off my party forever since they are just so damn boring) but the enviroment looks so bland

Best part of Vanquish is no dull levels on replay like those two stages.  Only slow part in Vanquish is the tram ride.

see? this is why i prefer to play JRPG instead of WRPG,i've reached Ferum (i think that's what it's called) and i'm shooting at zombie like creature with a shotgun, this is not a RPG,it's fucking resident evil 4 and actualy after coming to that conclusion it doesn't surprise me that the media gush all over this game and here's the thing,i love my game to be weirds, the more weirdness they feature the better it is,this is why psychonauts was the last western game that i REALLY REALLY liked, but this just feel so damn flat (and dare to say a little slow... talking with people feels like it takes forever)

before people accuse me of being a horrible guy who hates on everything,i'm not saying that this makes the game an horrible piece of shit, just why i don't find it interessing at all,it's a shooter and shooter are boring averagish game that are all about shooting alien, zombie, nazi or terrorist, they are not weird at all....

lastly i can't help but find it ironic how some people complain about THE HORRIBLE LINEARITY OF FFXIII

FFXIII is totally linear in every aspect.

Mass Effect has linear dungeons, but allows the player to determine in what order many of the parts of the game are tackled and whether or not to take part in the multiple sidequests that are scattered around.

Mass Effect lets you go to like 4-5 story worlds, explore, and do sidequests within those story worlds. You're never on one set path. Please spare me the bullshit.

And because you shoot shit in ME1 does not mean it's not an rpg. It's an rpg due its sub systems. You know, the classes? The inventory? The loot? The character customization?

Rpgs are not defined by combat alone.

The view of Normandy's ruptured hull before it explodes as it shows off that beautiful looking planet wasn't an awesome looking scene (at least as far as you can get with gaming)?

I mean, it's so visually stunning that even if you haven't played the original ME, it should be enough to impress.

It's an rpg due its sub systems. You know, the classes?

which barely seems to matter other than i have to bring that masked girl who always dies nor i'm negated from getting certain items

Quote
The inventory?

my inventory is currently made of junk weapon i don't need and that's about it... there aren't even any healing item let alone stuff like accessories or all the other thingamajig you would usualy find in.... you know... an rpg! and beside, there are... what? 4 different weapons for each kind? i swear i have like 3 copies of the same exact rifle! you would think that if they were try to going for something a-la diablo they would have put more stuff in it!

Quote
The loot?

my reward for that monkey sub-quest was some money and some experience, that's all the loot i got

Quote
The character customization?

but it barely feels like character customization,i gain some point, put them in more hp/damage and that's it!

Rpgs are not defined by combat alone.

i don't think for once i tought "if only i had more defense maybe i could have survived that attack" but instead my line of tought is "maybe i should have hide behind the door"
that's the line of tought you have when playing a shooter!
other than the fact that you gain experience and that occasionaly instead of finding "RIFLE I" you find the slighty more powerfull "RIFLE II" there is really nothing about it that makes it feel like an RPG,your character don't even have any sort of stat to begin with and i'm not even sure why you need more damage since everything dies in 2-hits,you know you would think that at least there would be something like a medic class like in team fortress to give some sense to classes, that would make sense but no! your character regenerate health LIKE IN A SHOOTER!

if it has a cover system like a duck, has different weapon including a sniper rifle like a duck, has regenerating health like a duck, and then does battle in a duck-like fashion what the fuck do you call that?

anyone who says mass effect 2 is a rpg is a idiot. it's gears of war with a conversation system and talents.

For what its worth magus, I do agree with the blatant bias that goes against FF13 regarding "tunnels"

you shouldn't have picked a soldier magus. At least classes like Vanguard get magic abilities and shit, soldiers just make the game seem like a generic TPS.

so FF13 linearity would be okay if you could pick the order of chapter? i'm sorry but that's just stupid

FF13 linearity would be okay if you pick the order of locations you visit, have sidequests AND aren't forced to continue on a railroad.

Some of ME's sidequests are shit, some are good. Because there are shit sidequests doesn't meant they're ALL shit.

What are you talking about? You don't have to bring Tali anywhere.

ME's inventory sucks, but that doesn't mean it's not an rpg.

Some people like being charismatic, some like putting points in healing, some like putting points into their bullets so they steam roll over everything. Just like how in DQ8 you can choose to put points in swords, axes, or your own character class.

And yet you still do more than shooting in ME1. ME1 is an rpg, although not a very good one, but it's still a good game. ME2, however is a great game but not even worth describing as being an rpg, because it's not.

Actually, on my pc replay of ME, I skipped every non-story planet sidequest and the game was 10x better. The non-story planets where you explore isolated unsettled planets are all universally awful.

But that barely scratches the surface of ME and you know it.

And for someone complaining that the game is a shooter, it is so hilarious you went with soldier class. I mean, really?

i was just about to say, congrats on picking the shittiest class that actually DOES make the game play like a third-person shooter.  shoulda gone with a class that let you use debuffs and offensive spells.
