Been playing Shin mode in Akai Katana over the last couple days, finally made some progress: 2.277 billion clear with the Type 2 ship. Also the western record. :P

Not happy with that run though since I know I can do better. Ideally I can get a 2.5+ billion TLB clear, but it's gonna be hard.

I'll be finishing DR2: Case Zero tomorrow morning.

I played a ton of Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga with my son today. The Prequel game was actually made first, and is quite early in the whole Lego-such-and-such franchise, so maybe I should cut it some slack. Or maybe I should be more aware of the dangers of playing with a 6-year-old. There are some seriously questionable decisions about co-op play implementation. And then there's inconsistency in the difficulty curve -- seriously, that pod race is dick-staplingly difficult compared to everything preceding it, and pretty much everything after it. We played through all of Ep. 1 and almost all of Ep. 2 today. It was good fun, but sometimes very frustrating.

My friend and I were playing Hyperdimension Neptunia... my first ever Idea Factory experience. Really bad game, the music is absolutely brutal, the camera sucks (and your character just feels like she is floating on top of the environment, reminds me of a Bethesda game in 3rd person mode in that regard), and even the most basic battles take forever. There are all sorts of systems that don't really make much sense (you have to set probabilities for when characters want to use an item, why not just be able to use items outright?), and it just seems like you go to dungeons from a menu, watch overly-long cinemas, and then go into boringly-designed dungeons that are laid out like a bad roguelike/random dungeon game.

I appreciated that they tried something interesting and wildly different with the DLC, and I was happy to play as John again. It has a B-movie, freaky vibe, which I mostly liked, but it is not as fun as RDR overall.

Saving the towns is useful in that you can only save at safehouses, and you can only bunk in safe towns. If you're just playing through story missions, it will auto-save after each so, no, not necessary in the larger picture.

Well it looks like I'm going to end up doing everything because that's just how I am.  I've just about finished up everything north of Mexico, so about 1/2 through it now.  Thank god for fast travel, makes keeping all your towns safe pretty easy.

The only thing is my HORSE OF THE APOCALYPSE DIED, wtf, I thought they were immortal!  He feel down a cliff and broke his bones and now when I hit up I get some crappy zombie horse who can't even run straight  :'(  Gotta go catch me another one of them I guess :(

Case Zero done. Chuck went out in style: Vaulted over the 1000 zombie mark with a Queen smashed in a crowd, dashed back to the garage, hopped on my goddamned duct tape bike ( :lol ) and flipped off the pawn shop on my way out of town.

How great is it? The Pawn Shop, where a guy charges you $1500 for advice, and $5000 for A USED WHEEL, the owner's name is "DICK!"

Almost finished New Vegas Old World Blues. It's fantastic but there's probably too much running around and repeating sections, which is understandable given the small map. The few characters you do meet are woefully under used. And it's also really hard for my sneaky gun guy to kill any of the robot scorpions.

It's almost the opposite of Dead Money, which had amazing characters but terrible gameplay. Besides Broken Steel (which was more of the main story), OWB is easily my favourite DLC of the two games.

I have probably played more Nethack than every other game I've played combined.  Don't regret a minute of it, though I wish I could get into other roguelikes.  I keep hearing how Adom is great but I was too set in my Nethack ways to get into it.  I'll try again with Jade for sure.

Now I'm playing Balloon Kid via emu.  If there is any game that can sell me on a 3DS, this is it.

Playing through Assassin's Creed to wrap up the only game in the series I've neglected to finish before Revelations. I played a few hours back when it came out and said "Oh, I'll get back to it"... Since then I've heard a lot of vitriol about AC1, but it isn't bad at all. Outside of a much larger budget, much of what is in AC2 is here as well, though the overworld is a bit big and boring.

Also playing Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars here and there.

Also playing Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars here and there.

I finally found my copy of Chinatown Wars (along with Osu Tatakae Ouendan and Mario Kart DS), so that's been on occasional play. I'm trying to wrap up Liberty City Stories, and am on the last mission, at lunch today I was having a great run, whiffed an easy turn and ended up going into the ocean. Tony can't swim, so... :lol I was so close to the end!

But, about Chinatown Wars, there are SO MANY good side-missions! Running around in low-rez Liberty City, it makes me wonder why I can't have this much fun on the full console version.

Original Assassins Creed is a mystery to me, how it manages to be so much less fun than AC2. As you say, the first installment has most of what AC2 does, but manages not to be entirely grindy and boring.

Beat 13/16 colossus in SOTC, and played through the first act of Vanquish. Great game, so much better than Gears of Bore (or any other TPS I've played for that matter), so much shit is going on at one time but the movement is so fast and kinetic. Only problem is it's a bit like Japanese take on dudebro.

More buttons is better once you've learned them.  Menus are the devil and bog everything down.  One of the very best things about Nethack is that it's possible to play it like an ARPG at 10x speed once you're good enough.  This looks like an abortion, frankly.  I like that ferret thing though and he has a cool hat.

It's cool and all but I didn't find anything about it to pull me away from Nethack.  Other than what seems like fewer arbitrary deaths.  But where's the fun in that?

What I'd like to play is a totally open-world rl.  Like Civ with a single character.

Got 2.9 billion in Akai Katana Shin today, which got me #10 on the leaderboard. I'm not really happy with that, so I've learned better strategies and I've been obsessed with getting over 3 billion.  But the precision required to be good at that game is absolutely fucking ridiculous. You HAVE to no miss until at least the end of stage 5 in order to get the rank as high as possible (so more bullets appear), but actually managing to do that while doing a bunch of risky scoring techniques is insanely hard.

Makes me appreciate SIN's 7 billion world record even more. Guy is a fucking GOD.

Somebody just needs to make Nethack only on a really big Civ-like map.  Like Dwarf Fortress only it doesn't make me feel like a distinguished mentally-challenged fellow for not getting it.
ofc, there's Minecraft (which sold crazynuts) but I have my doubts that will ever be the game I want it to be, even though it keeps edging in the right direction.

I hope one of these days a big budget (action/adventure) game will use procedural generation and it will actually work and be awesome.

Left 4 Dead series is probably the closest with the AI, but the levels stay the same.

Budgets being what they are, and getting bigger, they're going to have to sooner or later.  Bunch of big games are making use of it for world-building, but they're not doing it on-the-fly yet.
It sounds totally awesome but I am sure the game industry will find a way to make me curse the very idea and myself for thinking it would ever be good.

Finished Undead Redemption.

I don't even know why I bothered.  I figured "hey, at least I'll have warp points all over the map and make doing the story quick", only to find out the story doesn't even use the right half of the Mexico map and a lot of the locations.  Heck there was only 1 stranger mission in Mexico at all!

The story was soooo short.  Even though the DLC took me almost 7 hours, there must be like 3 hours of story in the game.  Spent most of saving villages which just meant shooting respawning zombies for 5 mins straight until the meter fills up.  I found that the fastest way to kill them was not even to aim, but just run straight at each zombie and do a close-up gun kill over and over and over.  Very very repetitive.

The only saving grace of the DLC was the final story mission which was actually A NEW LOCATION and had creepy music and a neat little spooky story.  I wish the rest of the DLC was more like that.  It was nice running around in RDR again to remind me that RDR is a freaking awesome game, but it also reminded me that zombie games are boring.  I can't think of the last game featuring zombies that was actually fun for more than 2 hours :X

grossly overrated DLC. It's just an unispired re-skin of the main game, and the undead multiplayer mode was just OK.

Eh, they use a lot of roguelike rules such as extreme consequences for dying. The one key aspect of roguelikes they're missing is the randomized aspect, but not all roguelikes are random (Etrian Odyssey).

1 thumb up, 1 thumb down.

More like one, rotting thumb, half falling off the hand, eh.

It's not stunning, but I did enjoy it. It is not tuned as well as the vanilla RDR, and it feels desolate in an unsatisfying way, rather than "creepy." It was worth the money just to play as John again, and I enjoyed the tongue-poking-through-hole-in-cheek humor, and the alternate take on some of the characters.

I wasn't fond of the resolution's need to fit it into the game's canon. If there's a sequel, and it would be hard to believe there is no sequel coming, the zombie stuff won't be in it!

I suspect this is just what San Diego decided to do for DLC, since there has ALWAYS been talk of having zombies in GTA, but that project hasn't ever done it.

I started playing my $20 copy of Child of Eden and I love it!  Then again I love Rez, so this was sort of a no brainer, just didn't want to pay $40-50 for a game that would be half price in a month.

Did the first stage with a controller twice, once normal, once in 3d.  The 3d is sort of cool when you're flying down tunnels and stuff, but it's too chaotic and hard to see everything.  2d is better but if you're going to replay the game a few times it's neat to do one run in 3d just for the effect.  Playing with a controller feels fine EXCEPT it seems like if you are going for 100% on a stage it's going to be a looooot harder on a controller because your cursor moves pretty slow and if things are moving faster than your cursor you can't keep up!  I guess you need to just memorize where everything moves in a stage if you want to 100% with a controller.

First game that's made me sort of tempted to spend $50 on a move controller.  Also makes me want to spend $50 on a second dual shock so I keep get my TRANCE VIBRATOR.  Will probably buy the latter tomorrow.  Been needing a new one forever since musou games have killed the square button on my current one.

How can I heal gaming aids and is it there a cure? I'm getting Skyrim and Saints Row so I'm guessing I will be this time next week.
