Bad Company 2's SP campaign isn't thaaaat bad I guess.  It's totally uninspired; helicopter mini-gun stage, sniper stage, tank stage, etc....  But the destructible buildings/walls make the combat kind of cool since things are just blowing apart left and right.  And it looks fairly nice and runs really smooth 60fps.  Story doesn't seem worse than CoD games.  Music kind of sucks.  I dunno, I haven't played an FPS in a long time so I don't mind spending the 4-6 hours it takes to run through some pretty set pieces and shoot a million guys of foreign ethnicities.

Although, it does make me want to play a better FPS after this.  Maybe I'll play Crysis Warhead finally.

Naughty Dog have always been Sony's Rare on a faster release schedule.  Donkey Kong Country -> Crash comparison is dead on (Crash was clearly a response to the unfortunate popularity of DKC, right down to the most superficial details, people seem to not remember or notice that).
Giving Crash a spin attack was a real good design decision though - perfect way to introduce young players to wasting threats in 3D space.  Meanwhile Nintendo gave Mario a punch button, which was pretty dumb and useless.

I don't think I'll ever understand why Spyro and Crash were popular.

Crash is like Donkey Kong Country in 3D.  Controls feel so sloppy and you're running through insipid levels fighting generic animals enemies, breaking boxes and collecting shit.  And the presentation of both is garish.  I can excuse dated swimming textures (or just the uggo DKC sprites), but Crash is just like...I don't know.  I get to a save spot and there's a female Crash, except her body has human proportions while Crash is just a giant head.  It's just like DKC and the humanoid bimbo monkey thing.  And I can't tell if something is wrong with the audio and music.

I liked all the PS2 platformers from Naughy Dog and Insomniac, but their PS1 games always seem bad whenever I try them.  Spyro is just boring; the only good one is for the GBA.  PS1 even had better platformers like Jumping Flash.  Well I guess you can say the same about SNES.

they were product of their times, platformer mascotte's on a popular console without any platform mascotte
and besides they weren't that bad of game, spyro suffer a little from collectathon syndrome but otherwise it surely beat the shit out of stuff like croc

but the best psx (and ps2 too might i add) platform will always remain

good night sweet prince :'(

Uh...the original Spryo was AWESOME. I'm sorry that you guys are a bunch of loser N-tards that thought Super Mario 64 was the height of videogames and Spyro was just a dumb Sony game where you mashed buttons while drooling on the controller like a baby, but maybe you ought to broaden your horizons a bit and play a game that's actually worth a tinker's cuss instead of licking the malformed feet of Nintendo.

Spyro, fools, remember that name.

For the longest time I couldn't really get into Super Metroid for whatever reason, and happily enjoyed the rest of the Metroid series. However, I finally sat down to play some today and it got its hooks way into me. Not sure what was different this time than the dozens of times I've tried to play it and thrown the controller in disgust, but I'm having a blast jumpin' and shootin' all over alien country. Though playing only reminds me that it'll be a long time before we see another Metroid game, if ever again.

combat was the best part of Other M and that's all TN worked on.

A "New Super Metroid" is what the series needs right now.  Make the budget in-line with hardcore sales expectations, hype it up...hell, rehash Super Metroid all they want, just make a 2D game for christ's sake.

i'd definitely temporarily own a used 3DS/Wii/Wii-u for it.  :lol

i think mix of 2d and 3d mario galaxy 2 style is the best route for metroid. I think we're at the point where a third person Metroid would really work well, Dead Space/RE4 style. The problem is, is the audience even there? Such a game seems like it'd be best handled on something that's not a nintendo console.

Finally beat Espgaluda II; got 394,247,302 with Ageha. I've been playing it on and off ever since I got done with Akai Katana, so it took me a while to get through it. I'm glad I finally beat it, but I'm pretty disappointed with my run. I messed up a bunch of scoring areas and had a stupid death or two on stage 6, so I think I could get 450m or so. Oh well, I'll probably keep playing for a while longer.

Oh, and it's an awesome game. I didn't like it very much when it first came out, but I was still pretty terrible at shooters back then. I'd definitely recommend putting some time into it after leveling up on some easier games.

Gundam Versus Extreme

Everyone who ever liked Virtual On at any point should import this.  This is absolutely Virtual On's successor and it's just absolutely amazing 4 on 4 tournament arena fighter.  60 characters and 4 more coming in DLC, all with deep move lists and good balance.  Lots of stages, music, great visuals and pretty decent for Japanese standards online play.  Fun SP mode too.  I've already put 5+ hours in and I've barely scratched the surface.  It's so awesome to see what Virtual On would be like if it was still the king of robot versus in 2011.

VOOT still has an active community, though it's mostly just the hardcore players and whoever else wants to try to learn the game. But anyway, how is the online for Gundam? I figure it'll be borderline unplayable for Americans because 99% of the players are  going to be Japanese. And does it have 1v1, or is the main focus on team battles?

Online is ok.  The connections are usually yellow and occasionally red but you can't tell much when playing.  Feels pretty smooth.  Japanese players are ridiculously good though.  Everyone is tourney-level.

You can do 1v1 if you want.  But the balance is definitely for 2v2.

Only for certain win/loss requirements in the SP mission mode.  The main arcade game and online is just a fighting game.  Figuring out the movelists takes some effort though since everyone plays differently.  But Shouta is translating the movelists and gaffers will answer questions.  There's about 10 people on gaf who imported it and are playing online.

This game is ridiculous.  I haven't been this into a competitive fighting game in foreeeever.  So much fun.  I can see myself playing this for months.  Just gotta stop it from sucking up all my time.

Japanese players are crazy too.  Game just came out 4-5 days ago and people have 400-500 online wins already.  Argh.

Also this game makes a good argument for why the OO movie should exist.  Quanta Gundam is really fun to play as.

yeah, i'm pretty busted there.  but bethesda's past games took little to no skill, aside from right at the beginning when you're level 1, and on top of that it's not like combat is balanced or even anything more than just a little competent in all of their games.  The "hard" parts of Oblivion were wholly due to jankiness.  I'm somehow doubting it's suddenly Dark Souls quality gameplay the whole way through.

how does difficulty mean something is a better game? SMB2j is harder than Mario 1 and it sucks. and if it's like demon's souls, it's probably not that hard anyways, it's probably mostly just "learning the level" like a mega man game. the biggest mistake gamers make is equating dying to a game's challenge. they are two different concepts.

I think I'll try to get a decent score out of Futari 1.5 Original before the end of the year (like 300-350 million). I played a couple credits just now and found that all I really need to practice is stage 5 and Larsa; I can no miss no bomb the rest of the game, so I just need to string it all together in a real run. Already beat my old score in a run I was about to trash because it was going so poorly.

I think both 1.5 Original and Black Label Original are kinda crap as far as Cave goes (which means they're still better than most games 8)), but maybe I'll change my mind by the time I'm done. Probably not though.

anyhow I finally got around to playing Portal 2.

I went from disliking the game at the start, thinking it was a rehash which relied entirely on riffing on the meme humor which neckbeard nerbos love to JO over.

But man, is this game a top quality product. The polish, the easter eggs, the intricate puzzles, the innovative storytelling. Almost at the end now and loving it. Going to go for 1000 even!

Oh, and I havent touched co-op yet, so if anyone has beaten co-op and needs the "Professor Portal" achievement (help a new player do co-op tutorial if you have finished the game), hit me up for an easy 75 gamerscore. (I'm playing on 360, of course).

co-op is the best part of that product. the single player is too self-indulgent and tries too hard with the jokes imo. just like with the transition from HL1 to 2 they forgo the simplicity of a neat set-up and incidental story beats in favor of flash and exposition dumps.

Playing the co-op was best on split screen for me as half the fun is the frustration of not being able to work together and throwing pillows at each other with the sexual tension of a quarreling gay couple.

super frustrating game as a kid when you spend quarters on it, but I sort of learned how to play it on its own shitty terms and found it enjoyable.  It's not a completely incompetent pre-SFII fighter, but the controls are pretty damn awkward.  You can sort of combo, but it's more like frame-trapping/resetting and all dependent on finicky button press timing.  Plus, you collect women as the prize for every fight.  The sprites are pretty nice.

I wanna compare the credits with KOF staff because it seems like there are a few character designs that are similar to KOF characters--- main character = Takuma, one of the bosses looks a bit like Mr. Karate.

your post prompted me to go on mobygames to look at SNK credits and I ended up finding out that SWERY of Deadly Premonition fame was credited as a director on The Last Blade.

Huh, didn't know that. Daisuke Ishiwatari worked on The Last Blade as well, and then after he was done with that he went on to make Guilty Gear.

co-op is the best part of that product. the single player is too self-indulgent and tries too hard with the jokes imo. just like with the transition from HL1 to 2 they forgo the simplicity of a neat set-up and incidental story beats in favor of flash and exposition dumps.

Playing the co-op was best on split screen for me as half the fun is the frustration of not being able to work together and throwing pillows at each other with the sexual tension of a quarreling gay couple.

Sold! I'll be buying this and playing through it with my bro-in-law. First, I'll let Sceneman pop my co-op cherry though.  :-*

yeah I played with a friendly chap off TA yesterday and got him his professor portal achievement. We knocked out the first two testing zones too, as well as other cheevs. He knew what he was doing, and I was fresh out of SP so we made a great team!

I will check that out, but Street Smart is a weird beat em up fighting game, all one-on-one matches.  You travel the U.S. collecting women, then you realize the women all look like the same woman with different hairstyles, but in the end you realize you get to bang octuplets in the middle of a stadium full of people.
