actually, take your definition of "a lot" and multiply it by a lot, and that's what I mean when I say "a lot worse"

One thing I liked about BC2 compared to CoD, was that even though the writing was terrible, at least they didn't take it seriously and it was pretty goofy at times.

Upgraded computer means better emulations, so I've been digging back into my PS2 backlog to put some time into games that I never really put that much time into before.

Final Fantasy X-2 - Easily wins the FABULOUS MAX award for Fabulousness. I like way the garment grid allows you to switch combat styles on the fly to meet the challenges of individual battles [even though spamming attack works nearly as well in most cases] and I also like the way the game is basically just about running around the world going on crazy [and fabulous] adventures with only a vaguely referenced impetus for doing so. It's a fresh approach and I don't have to take all that seriously because it doesn't take itself all that seriously.

Final Fantasy XII - Gonna make another go at it after making it through 12-15 hours on my last attempt. Vahn and Penelo is still dumb as rocks, with the best characters relegated to dying during the first five minutes of the game or playing second fiddle to the plucky teens, but I can deal with that as long as there is some huge, featureless expanse to wander through and occasionally fight monsters in, which FFXII has in abundance.

Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter - The timer always put me off, I hate games with constantly-running timers. But I've determined not to let that stop me this time and intend to make it halfway through the game then start over from the beginning with my characters all buffed up for a smooth-sailing second playthrough.

Bonus game:

Xenoblade - Thanks you, Based-Intel, for your magnificent Sandy Bridge architecture. I can now play GOTY 2011 on my PC at a playable framerate and without sound stuttering! Sitting through all the early cutscenes again isn't particularly fun, but it'll be smooth sailing once that's out of the way and the game blows wide open.

How do the other characters take second fiddle to Vaan and Penelo in FFXII? Once you've got Balthier and Ashe, they're pretty much the main characters. The game even makes fun of this and the party (notably Balthier) questions why the fuck Vaan is tagging along anyways. FFXII is Ashe's story.

I bought and played through Crusader of Centy a few years ago, but completely blanked on the game... like I forgot nearly everything about it! So my friend was over and I showed him the game, he really dug it... then today I started a new game and am about halfway through already :P So I'm gonna finish it up over the next few days.

Also played through Sonic CD XBLA (amazing port)... but missed most of the 'cheevs. :bow American Soundtrack :bow2

When aforementioned friend was over, we played a whole host of random games - Tales of Destiny R (PS2), Princess Crown, Sonic CD, Disgaea, and Astal.

Put in some time to Jamestown as well, pretty good for an American STG, very nice pixel art and music.

Started playing Espgaluda II Black Label. I think I know how the game works after reading a guide and watching a few replays, but it's hard to really get a grip on it since there are so many different systems working together. I'm guessing it's going to take a few days to get comfortable with this game. It seems fun though. Gotta be one of Cave's better console modes.

I'm up to Chapter 14 I think on Ghost Trick as well. That game's pretty good too; it starts out really slow (which is why I dropped it earlier), but it's pretty interesting once it starts to pick up.

And I've been trying to play Rayman, but I just can't get into that game. It's not bad, but it's kinda boring and not at all engaging so far (up to world 3 or 4). Same problem I've had with every Mario game since 64. I guess platformers are just dull if they're not hard enough.

Just shout at your machine, if you've got Kinect. This afternoon, I was just shouting "Xbox. Bing. Saints Row." and all the SR stuff showed up, so I tried "Xbox. Bing. Saints Row the Third." and ONLY SR3 stuff showed up. If you know what you want, it's pretty cool.

You know, I stuck in Motorstorm PR to refresh my memory on what it was like before I start up Motorstorm Apocalypse and then I remembered I kind of hate this series.

Don't get me wrong, there's some good track design and though the graphics are kind of bad when looked at in stills, with motion blur it has a good arcade sense of speed.  But, man, there is no other racing game that is as random luck determined as the Motorstorm series.  You can be driving around when some pebble or bump slightly turns your car making it flip into a rock.  Or when you're driving and a monster truck FALLS ON YOU.  The physics are just complete wack and no matter how well you drive the race it's always so easy for you to be on the final turn and then something goes wrong and you lose the whole thing.  I love arcade racers, but most racing games tend to feel very skill based and the better you get and more familiar you get with the track, you do better.  But Motorstorm is more of just brute force keep retrying until you get lucky and take 1st.  Which is kind of bad design!

Will still give Apocalypse a shot since I picked it up when it finally dropped in price a bit.  But may just go back to Wipeout HD while waiting for 2048.

God, Espgaluda 2 BL is distinguished mentally-challenged. I made it to the final boss with 5 lives remaining (with Seseri), but I still didn't beat it because I completely fucked up her second form (died and missed the safe spot). If you don't go into her final form with 250-300 gems and instakill her in kakusei, you are absolutely fucked because your regular laser does pitiful damage, and when you die you respawn with 0 gems, so you can't enter kakusei period. I would be so pissed right now if I had a good run that ended like that, but I fucked up tons of stuff and only had 1.380 billion or something, so whatever. Still annoying.

edit: Practiced her for a while in training mode, think I can no miss her pretty consistently now. Training mode always solves every problem. 8)

well as owl said the first weird thing about the game is the battle system,it plays like a billiard games and each times you bump into an enemy you deal damage,of course the reverse is true so it's actualy possible to kill yourself if an enemy bounce off a wall and then bump's into you

items don't get used instantly but instead they get throw into the field,if you bump into an item you get their effect but some items are nocive so in that case you want to bump the enemy so that he bumps into the item

the collection aspect comes into the fact that each enemy represent an item, shop don't sell potions and such, you have to capture the enemies by making them bump into an analyzing item and after that shop start selling the item related to that enemies,it's a cool idea but to be fair there are a lot of repeats

lastly there is a weak rock/paper/scissor element to it,as you progress the game you gain cores which let you transform your robot into ships or planes and ships are strong against planes and such...

I got duckroll Gray Matter for his birthday and he actually blew through it in like 3 days and enjoyed it.

Makes me so happy to see people enjoying Gray Matter.  It's the most underrated game this decade and with no distribution and no one playing it, it's probably the last real adventure game we'll see :(

it had an Amazon sale recently and I was going to buy it, but thought "wait, Steam sale.  it'll be cheaper there."  then I realized it wasn't on steam.  I'll probably get it with all this Amazon digital game credit I'm raking up.

Yeah, it drops to <$15 regularly on Amazon downloads.  Unfortunately they don't let you gift games, so I had to buy it for $30 from the Adventure Shop to gift it digitally.

If the game was on steam I think it'd sell decently from great word of mouth.  Same if it was in some indie bundles.  But the euro distributor it has is totally euro janky :(

the breath of fire 2 re-translation is super professional, they went and hacked the menu so it has a scrolling inventory a-la final fantasy and they expanded the max letter possible for item so you have stuff like "copper sword" instead of "copperswrd"

it's incredible how capcom got it wrong twice and a random dude with too much times in his hand got it right :lol

Yeah, it starts off really slow. I dropped it at chapter 5 or 6, but it starts to pick up almost immediately after that, and the final stretch of the game is fantastic. I didn't like replaying scenes over and over either, but that's really only a problem in a few chapters where you have to wait for a specific point before doing a trick (or if you get stuck and fail over and over). Most of the time the solutions are pretty straight forward, so I didn't think it was a big problem. At least it's not as bad as having to mash through tons of text when you fail a trial in Phoenix Wright.

Just beat Espgaluda 2 BL (with Seseri). I was having a pretty shitty run, survival wise, so I'm kinda surprised I cleared it. Did decently with the scoring though, so I wound up with 1.622 billion. Not a bad score, but still pretty mediocre imo (ranked #21). Great game though, definitely one of Cave's better console modes. And I appreciate that it isn't as oppressively difficult as vanilla Galuda 2. :)

Dynasty Warriors 7: my most played game this year. Between 50 hours of the ps3 version and 30 hours of the 360 version so far. Mashin', combos, loot, levels, conquest, history, fantasy, politics. Love me some DW. May import Warriors Orochi 3 later.

Final Fantasy XIII: replaying for XIII-2, much better on replay. Replay reminds me there are lots to like about the game.

Skyrim: my reserve game. Do a few quests, play something else. Not boring per se, it's still awesome efen 60 hours in. But the endless stream of content means I can jump in any time and do something new. Great for. Oth casual and hardcore play.

played some mario 3d land yesterday and holy fuck at that first vertical level.  Now that is a good case for 3D, but too bad that this early game will probably be the pinnacle of 3D functionality for the system's entire life span.

I've been playing a lot of Final Fantasy XIII lately and it's pretty great. Love the battle system [especially how positioning and chaining arts really make a huge difference], the massive environments [and the way you get different moods/music depending on whether it's day or night], and the characters and cutscenes aren't too bad. I mean, they're not exactly great or anything, but they do get the job done and keep from being overly annoying like in a lot of JRPGs. Oh wait...this is Xenoblade.

Yeah, Final Fantasy XIII is the game with the immortal dude traveling around the world trying to regain his memory, with a great Uematsu soundtrack, a turn-based battle system, lots of sidequests, and poignant stories layered throughout the game. Oh wait, that's Lost Odyssey.

I started Persona 3 for the first time... just made it past the first time you go to Tartarus... awesome so far but I wish there were more chances to save. The intro is VERY long...
