whoever was responsible for the tips that constantly appear in battle in arkham city can fucking choke.  for some reason no one noticed or cared that in the hardest fights in the game a stupid paragraph-long message will keep appearing telling you how to counter knife attacks.  it blocks everything above batmans head and caused me so many cheap deaths in the last part of the game that i wanted to throw something.

also lol i just realized that hard on arkham asylum didnt have the counter icons.  i cant believe i played through that whole game without them.  actually now that i think back on it i still relied on visual cues - the enemies charging or raising their fists - so it wasnt that bad.

anyway, here i go on new game plus!

This game EYE Divine Cybermancy is so fucking weird. For better or for worse it makes me feel like I'm 8 years old again playing something totally alien I only half understand.

So I checked out the webpage for the game, and it looks like a fairly standard FPS with poorly worded and over exaggerated text on the webpage... but I'm interested, in the way you described it. What makes the game so strange?

Playing Persona 3, just hit floor 57. The one boss at floor 35 was such a pain in the ass, but it's been smooth sailing lately. I'm near the end of June. I love the game but have a feeling I'm gonna get so sick of it by the time I'm done, Tartarus is already becoming really repetitive.

My Xmas break gaming:

Final Fantasy Type-0 - The gameplay is kind of shallow and the balance is not that great, but otherwise it's a neat Peace Walker meets Persona meets Monster Hunter style Final Fantasy.  Made for doing missions and quests and stuff in short bursts with your buddies or AI dudes.

Uncharted 3 - derp derp derp, it's nice.  Fire looks good.

Dead Space Extraction - About halfway in and really digging it.  This game is EXACTLY what the Wii Resident Evil rail games were trying to be but failed miserably at.  DSE is 100x better.

RAGE - Actually enjoying this a lot.  It feels very old-school throwback FPS feeling (no auto-saving/checkpoints; gotta remember to save yourself; lots of corridor shooting, few cutscenes; no cover systems) combined with some new systems like loot, quests, crafting, sandbox overworld, and recharging health combined with some really impressive visuals that never drop a frame below 60fps at anytime.  I can see myself getting bored of it later on, but a couple of hours in it's a nice old-school shooter in a modern package.

Orcs Must Die - Still working through this.  It's really fricken hard now (~halfway).  Managing multiply portals and multiple entry points at once while using portals to move between them takes hardcore micromanagement.  Really fun and cool game, but pretty tough!

Rock of Ages - Man this game sucks so much just like Zeno Clash did.  ACE Team apparently can't design gameplay for shit  :lol  But they nail art design and story telling.  The cutscenes in Rock of Ages are amazinggggggggggggggggg; I am seriously playing just to watch the 30 second cutscene intro to each battle because the story mode is hilarious.  The gameplay seems totally broken nonsense.  Place some defenses down and hope you get lucky and they actually do some damage, but mainly it's just whoever launches their 3-4 ball runs first wins since the defenses do jack shit most of the time to both sides.  lol

The Blackwell Legacy - Still early on in this.  It's not bad, not great so far.  I like the pixel art and the music is actually kind of neat; but the plot isn't all that gripping compared to the better adventure games I've played recently.  But I'm early, so hopefully it picks up.  Will stick through the first game and see if I want to play the next ones in the franchise.

It's an FPS RPG - or at least it tries to be - and there are like 5 different stats for every little thing. Nothing is explained. You start as a guy suffering from Video Game Amnesia and you learn that there are bunch of factions fighting each other. About twenty minutes in you reach your faction's base which has a big Lore Dump library, but I didn't have the inclination to read any of it so now I'm playing the game having no idea what anything means. There are a bunch of people talking to you in some Frenchman's interpretation of American street slang, it's hilarious.

The levels are vast and non-linear and your objectives, no matter what they are, basically amount to you having to reach the marker, which is not easy because there are enemies absolutely everywhere and they all respawn over and over and over.

It wants to be Deus Ex but it's not. It's stat-heavy but there's no real RPG gameplay. It's about navigating through a chaotic cyberpunk warzone just laying waste to everything without knowing what any of it means. I'm six hours in and baffled.

I'm 5 hours into Deus, just finished my first real mission. Going for the pacifist and complete stealth play through, and I'm having a lot of fun.

Character animations are hilariously bad, though I'm sure that's been discussed to bits.

I was talking to pilonv1 two days ago and he said something along the lines of "everyone realized that there were a couple of augs that mist be unlocked asap" but forgot their names. Any ideas?

Typhoon is must for the bosses, and I found hacking stuff really useful for loot and shitloads of bonus EXP.

But I have no idea what the common conception of the "best" augs are, I played the game and didn't read any forums or tips or anything. I found it pretty intuitive from the gameplay and my play style which augs to buy.

Yeah, I've got 3 pracxis points right now and the only "urgent" augs seemed like advanced hacking to me. Although unless I'll be able to store my inventory somewhere, I'm gonna have to expand my slots or learn to let go.

hacking stuff is must-have, as are the ones that help you find shortcuts like hi-jump and wall smashing.  avoid the combat & defense ones since you will never need those.  honestly you dont even need typhoon as long as you keep a shotgun or something around because all but one of the bosses will go down in >10 seconds.  stealth upgrades like silent step and cloaking are helpful later on when youre trying to navigate rooms full of enemies.

Will just vomit up my thoughts here since I got that WiiMote Plus for $8 deal from Best Buy. (Also came with Flingsmash, which I have yet to open.) Been playing just these recently. (To go with standard PC gaming.)

Wii Sports Resort - This is awesome. I thought Wii Sports was pretty great for friends back in the day at launch. But this is really great, I've had fun tinkering around alone. Can't figure out the frisbee to save my life. But go fuck that dog. Sword fighting, table tennis, etc. All good fun, golf is much improved. Basketball is my thing and I'm probably way too into that to be honest about the title. If anything it makes me lament that the MotionPlus wasn't the default from the start. I think about the fun had with people just in Wii Sports doing all this and it's pretty insane.

Red Steel 2 - Only played like an hour or so of this. And this somewhat reiterates the issues with the Wii to start. This and Sports Resort were what everyone imagined (at least I think) with the Wii. It's not that great so far but sword fighting and shooting is pretty fun. The only real problem is I can't figure out what to do with the sword fighting, should I stay seated like with a FPS and thus limit my slashes? Or stand like when I want to "get into it" on motion controls? And it obviously has the problems all FPS does on the Wii, that I can't really figure out but I think it lack of proper turning and tactile engagement. Lining up a guy in a Call of Duty in iron sights and filling him up on the Wii is just great. Turning quickly and even surveying the surroundings, just bad. Red Steel 2 is the same way, but it's single player only...

Though I am playing them on 4:3, I should probably try 16:9 once my other monitor comes back.

Punch Out - Not WiiMote Plus, thought it was, but I've liked what I played so far. Oddly shocked it didn't force you into a tutorial (or a three minute video like Resort) so I had to figure out jabs and such but what I have played has been enjoyable. Another Wii game I can see dicking around with for a half hour, maybe an hour when the mood hits.

Overall, it's a shame Wii Sports Resort didn't come out earlier with the WiiMote Plus, that seems like a major killer app. I'll have to see if I can wrangle up some people to play it like we used to Wii Sports. It appears to have tons of content. Just testing out the various games sorta reminded me of first playing around with Wii Sports back at launch.

But they nail art design and story telling.  The cutscenes in Rock of Ages are amazinggggggggggggggggg; I am seriously playing just to watch the 30 second cutscene intro to each battle because the story mode is hilarious.  The gameplay seems totally broken nonsense.
haha, I sorta mentioned in the Steam thread, but I was going through this entire thought process trying to just do the acheesement after I "won" the game as a gift and trying to figure out, well, anything about it. Then I pulled up the store page and was like "ohhhhhhh, now all of this makes complete sense."

If I was a billionaire I might just throw money at ACE to see what kind of crazy shit they could come up with.

thanks to the new computer, i've gotten a chance to play games which my old rig couldn't handle.  I'd just beaten Crysis 2 and loved it.  Currently playing Metro 2033 and Uncharted 1.  It's... I dunno.  It feels like Enslaved except with shooting instead of melee.  Nice characters and what not, shame about the game.

I've been replaying Dead Space 1 after playing Dead Space 2. Dead Space 1 does some things better than DS2, DS2 fixes some of the problems of the original game, but takes away some of the good things too.

A mute protagonist suits the atmosphere of these games MUCH better. In DS2 Isaac Clarke walks around gung-ho and emo freaking out over how bad his script is and his faget ass dead GF. Much better when he says nothing in DS1.

Still, good games, I'm working on getting 1000 in both of 'em

Finished The Blackwell Legacy.  Didn't realize it was a indie-length adventure game aka, 2 hours long.

Was ok, I don't usually complain about this but the story wasn't "dark" enough.  There was just no sense of urgency or excitement.  Was so-so.  Need to inquire if the next ones are better before digging in.

Yeah, Bastion was a bore when I played the demo on X360 and it was a bore when I played the intro again on PC for the gift achievement.  The combat is painfully boring.

People swear by it though, so at some point I will force myself to sit down for an afternoon and really play it.

Yeah, Blackwell Legacy just seemed like it was getting started then THE END. I haven't got around to playing the other ones yet.

Yeah, I thought the suicide case was like the INTRO LIGHT STORY MYSTERY that all adventure games start with to introduce the characters/setting and then bam! the real heavy duty plot kicks in.  But nope, that was the entire game without anything really left lingering.  Hopefully it's like Yahtzee's Chzo Mythos where the first game is episodic and then he realized he wanted to make a series out of it and the 2nd game is where shit got real yo.

Finished Dead Space Extraction.  Overall I liked it, but it got pretty repetitive by the end.  I still think Lightgun games are meant to be arcade affairs that reach 2-4 hours max.  These 6+ hour light gun games just wear out their welcome of enter room -> shoot same type of baddies -> enter room -> shoot same type of baddies.

The different weapons were fun to use and felt varied.  I like how the game is as ammo-scarce as the real Dead Space 1 and you're constantly having to cycle and use all 4 equipped weapons non-stop because you're always out of ammo.  Good tension.

The bosses kind of sucked, especially the last one which was freaking annoying when I ran out of all ammo and had to use my dinky nail gun and it took forever.  :\  Also the little insect creatures suck because if one jumps on you, you're going to spend the next minute WAGGLETHON to get them off your face since the second one jumps off the next one jumps on before you can do anything.  Also ran into a few bugs in the in the final stages like one part where an enemy got stuck behind something (which is scary because the stages are 30-50 mins long and you don't want to be stuck and have to redo the whole thing); lucky I had 1 grenade type shot and that was able to hit him offscreen and advance the stage.

But overall they did a good job.  I don't think it really added much to the DS storyline, can't think of anything new I learned that I didn't learn from DS1.  But it was fun shooting stuff in Dead Space the Lightgun Game.  I actually liked the first few stages the best because they were new locations (well not the first stage, but stage 2-4).  Once you get to the Ishimura it's like "oh, I've seen all these areas before when I played DS1" and revisiting them isn't really exciting.

Anyhow, looking forward to playing Dead Space 2 shortly!

I've started to download PS3 full games from PSN so I've been playing them:

Ridge Racer 7 3D - I was a big fan of RR6 so since this game is pretty much RR6.1, I still like it.  The graphics are showing their age.
Borderlands - Had a lot of fun with the 360 version.

There's a few PS3 downloads left but this should get me started for my remaining two days off.

I really liked that about DSE.  You see the places from DS1 before the events of that game.  I like returning to a location at a different point in time and seeing how things have changed or were.

Uncharted 3 is so good so far (51%, chapter 11, 4 hours).  I am all for ND making new franchises every gen, but I...kind of want them to keep giving me a new Uncharted adventure every 2-3 years.  It's more entertaining than 90% of the summer action movies each year.  Really like the writing and characters even though you have to disbelieve realism quite a bit.  The part in
spoiler (click to show/hide)
Syria, where you exit the tomb and it's daylight in the area you've spent an hour+ in at night...wow, looked incredible and was so cool seeing it in the day with colors everywhere and great lighting.  Man this game has incredible art design.
[close]

I think next summer I'll do an Uncharted playthrough of 1-3 + Vita version.

The thing is that I played DS1 so long ago and the environments themselves are so plain "BRIDGE; MEDICAL ROOM" that I didn't notice any difference!

August full moon in P3Fes, gonna go do that now. Really dig the game, even with the repetition and occasional crap the game puts me through (like "Mamudo" spells after you've spent an hour in Tartarus, and some boneheaded AI decisions). I like the atmosphere, especially around the dorm (seeing a new dialogue every day for the TV, for instance), and I dig the music, especially the full moon battle theme.

Questions for the fans:

-should I be leveling up all of my party equally? I just got the robot chick and have kinda ignored Junpei in favor of Mitsuru/Yukari/Akihiko.
-what % would you say I'm at with the game? Been playing ~35h now and about to max out my first few social links
-how do I raise academics quickly? I'm almost at max charm/courage but only on level 3 in academics...

Got to the Driving/Racing stuff in RAGE.  Other than the fact driving with a keyboard is kind of iffy so I switch to my X360 controller for racing, I don't mind it at all.  Maybe it's because I love arcade racers, even shitty ones, or because I have rpg ocd and want to do every quests and gold every race, but the driving is pretty fun.  Also like the economy system with buying/selling and building equipment/upgrading your suit/weapons.  Going in I thought I was going to be playing an FPS, I had no clue RAGE was an rpg fps.  Feels like Fallout 3 except with a little less rpg.

tiesto - there is an incredibly powerfull combination move which murders everything in a single hit including the final boss, but to get it,you need to have the persona you get by maxing the star social link

so make sure of maxing the star social link whenever you get to it
