I thought Mario 3D land was a bit bland. It's an okayish game, but as someone mentioned all you need is the racoon suit. Also, why does Nintendo reward you with an invinciable suit if you die enough? I noticed this in the latest mario games.

3d land is boring as fuck until the post game. The post game is the real game. And special worlds rarely give you the tanooki suit.

I really liked 3D Land, better than most of the 3D Mario games as a matter of fact. Especially the "second quest". I did everything including all gold coins, all gold flagpoles, beat every stage with both Mario and Luigi, and beat the special stage that unlocks when you do all that other crap.

I just made it to the second semester in P4 (September), maxed out Chie and the Fox's SLink and am on the way of doing it for Yukiko, Rise and Dojima. I need to raise some of my stats tho before I can do it for the loli unfortunately.

Still like 3's storyline better... seemed like 4 was just starting to get really good in terms of plot and then it started to drag a bit during the summer months.

I fucking loved the retro game dungeon, wonder if Minecraft and 3D Dot Game Heroes was inspired by this?

Super Mario 3D Land - World 8 is when the game stops being snore worthy. Pretty good right now.

I got all of the golden flags and star coins for the first six worlds.  The thing that bugs me the most about that game is that you pretty much only need the Tanooki suit.  The other powerups seem like novelties.  You definitely need the Tanooki suit to get the golden flags with relative ease.  Also the diorama feel of the game resulted in several cheap deaths for me.  Fortunately they don't skimp on the 1up collecting opportunities.

Update: Got all star coins and all golden flags up through the 2nd Special World except for the very last star coin at the last stage of the regular game.  For some reason I can never time the jump between the fireballs while keeping on the ride.  It's been killing me, I even got the white and gold tanooki suit of shame :(

The special worlds are a bit better but I wouldn't say they were Galaxy quality.  It just reminds me of another take of the Sunshine side levels.  Still a damn fine game though.

Edit: I'm going through Special World 4 and holy fuck, this game is starting to bite back.  Hard.  Still have about 190 lives.  At this point, I can hardly get anywhere unless I'm Tanooki Suit Luigi.

Finished Special World 8 except for the final stage, which you need to five star the game to unlock.  According to the activity log, I logged in 10 hours and 30 minutes.  I do intend to five star the game - I need to get all of the golden flags, which there are a few left I need to snag.  So the overall length is probably like 11-12 hours.  Hopefully I can get the game wrapped up in its entirety tomorrow.

Overall I really liked this game.  I'd almost consider it a classic and something I can see myself replaying again some day.  The special worlds get pretty nuts after a while.  You always got to keep moving, even with Shadow Mario/Luigi on your ass while fighting against a 30 second time limit.  Almost all of the stages in the last couple of worlds had at least one of those attributes.  However, everything is tough but ultimately doable and the levels are designed well enough to where if you screw up, it is pretty easy to figure out how to get past the obstacle/enemy/whatever.  There is some trial and error involved but some stages I completed by sheer dumb luck it seemed.  Also I finished the game with 455 lives :lol

The next 3DS game I'm probably going to play is Samurai Warriors.

So apparently you have to clear stages as both Mario and Luigi to unlock the special stage.  Eh, I'm not going to do that one for now.  I got other games on the backlog to tend to.  513 lives with 11 hours and 52 minutes on the activity log.

I still highly recommend it.

I don't like any of the retread challenges in the recent Mario games. I'm okay getting the star coins, that can be fun. But fuck if I'm going to replay the same shit as Luigi and grab all the flagpoles or whatever

so i bought XIII-2 and somehow ended up going back to XIII, which I beat on the 360 and not the PS3.

Unlike my revisit to MGS4, which confirmed everything I didn't like before, XIII has been a lot of fun.  I'm skipping cutscenes, but I feel like once you get past the first 5 hours or so, the difficulty ramps up a bit, which makes the lead up to full party control better.

The overall flow of the game isn't excusable and at times a drag, but the battle system is crack-cocaine.  I kinda forgot about that part since my 360 playthrough and that made me hate the game a lot haha.  I just wanna get to the post game...I've marathoned up to ch.10 this weekend!

also holy fuck @ the game's image quality on PS3.  Might be the best looking game I've played this gen.

I picked Luigi as soon as I unlocked him and I was SO SAD when I found out he doesn't do his cute little float jump. :( Then I realized there's no point if there's a tanooki suit.

:maf

Stop making Luigi a carbon copy of Mario, Nintendo. :maf The superior brother deserves more.

Nintendo are the worst offenders when it comes down to awards for completing their stupid shit. Out of boredom I collected all star coins in NSMB2, and all I got was a message: "congratulations you have collected all star coins". It's like going back to the 8-bit days.

Nintendo has always sucked at game rewards. I still remember kid me being annoyed that the reward for 100% Super Mario 64 was Yoshi giving you 99 lives.... which were completely useless since you already beat the game fully.

Going back to the 8-bit days? Nintendo never left.

mmm most of the time you get jackshit from Nintendo. Only exception I can think is Majoras Mask, which gave you the fierce diety mask for collecting all the other masks. And Fierce Diety basically made the last boss a complete joke.

I just saw the Breaking Brad on GiantBomb and made me want to play it again. I played it nonstop for a couple weeks, then I went on vacation for two weeks and never got back into it.

I unlocked the first three shortcuts but never got a key to the dude for the last shortcut. Do I have to bring 3 keys or just one?

you just have to bring the one key but he also wants a shotgun and like 20 grand iirc.

The shortcuts are good for learning the enemies and traps in the various areas, but really its actually easier to complete the game starting from the beginning as you can get yourself a stockpile of bombs and other useful items. Having lots of bombs and a compass makes the final area and the boss soooooo much easier.

my eyes are falling out of my head.

I noticed that I hit the X button constantly during every fight in the game, even though I'm not doing anything in between menu choices.  been doing it the whole 20 hours.

Even though it's pretty short, I still like the frozen crystal sea thing the best.   I just sat there checking out every inch of it.  Reminds me of other surreal environments in other FF games.

Lake Bresha. It was very nice, I agree.

I also loved the graphics on board of Palamecia.

Man, FF13 for being the shitty game it is, has some amazing locales.

i guess overall it is shitty for a mainline FF game.  but all the bad stuff is outweighed by the Active Time Cracksmoke battle system.  I'm sitting there like "jeez, it's just a hallway, forever...OMG A BATTLE"

love/hate relationship.  And i'm not too into stories, but XIII and XII were downright incomprehensible to me.  1 through X were just fine.  XIII could've won over a lot more people with a better/well-presented story.  I mean, Journey is a  couple-hour hallway, but it's goty for many...makes XIII look like even more of a dropped ball.

I've tried the usual things like clearing my cache and unattaching>reattaching all the cords and the HDD but still no dice. My box is 5 years old now and has seen some heavy play. Has been serviced by MS once so I'm assuming they replaced the mobo

Might as well try towel trick lol

I just had a fucking video game revelation

You know this part in Bioshock?

Well I've played through this part of the game a number of times and I've always... always went this direction:

Awkwardly jumping over boxes and stuff. I've always thought it was odd because it felt never felt natural.

Until today when I realized...

You can just walk up this ramp.

MY MIND HAD BEEN SHATTERED.

:lol

It's something which always gets me as well; Designers can make something reasonable obvious, but if there's a way to do something wrong, players will find it, and assume that they're doing what the Designer intended instead of a systemic side effect.

Bioshock did that to me several times. "How the hell was I supposed to see this path?!" After several attempts to frustratingly re-do the mistaken path, I finally find the right way to go. "Oh..."

I've been playing S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat on Master difficulty and it's so much hardcore deliciousness. I really wish there were more FPS RPGs with decent or even good combat. Playing this is getting me hyped for this team's next game, Survarium. Despite being free2play, I have a feeling they're more than capable of following up on the promise of their previous games.

i just spent an hour on a fight on pulse-- there's a big robot generating and buffing smaller robots.   It keeps pooping them out and I kept killing them, but it's a damn hard fight when 5 of them are on screen and they all have every buff in the game on them.  I grinded some crystarium points to level up, I leveled up weapons, I planned out the whole thing so I could kill tons of robots, then kill the generator and then get a toooooonnnnnnn of crystarium points.

turns out you can't get extra points from the generated robots  :fbm

One of the most interesting and nuanced [and depressing] stories in a videogame. Well, it's really just reading stuff and sometimes you have a dialog choice, but I DON'T CARE. Good time-waster for the $2.50 I paid for it.

goddamnit, i should've gone for Hard then.

It seems harder at first than P3P ever was, so I guess you get overlevelled at some point?   Or is just that I'm not familiar with the enemy weaknesses yet.  I feel like I'm pretty starved for money and under pressure in battle.   Just started the bath house.

It started out harder and then got easier for me because early in the game you don't have the Fox yet (he heals your party for money) and you don't have access to very good items from the shops and/or stockpiles of items from previous dungeons. Also P4G is even more broken balance-wise because you get a ridiculous amount of stat boosting cards from shuffle time and the ability to pick what abilities you want to keep when fusing, which makes it easy to turn your personas into killing machines.

Normal..

I'm playing the PS2 one of course.

P3's dungeons felt much more like battles-of-attrition since you couldn't exit and resume your progress on the same floor (you'd usually have to go up 6 or 7 floors at one time), and of course your party AI was distinguished mentally-challenged. I felt I changed personas much more in the 3rd game and was much more focused on my deck. P4 I just fuse and fuse and just play with my strongest guy for the most part. I'm using Chie/Yosuke/Yukiko and right now have a level 60 Tam Lin.

Giana Sisters Twisted Dreams gets very, very difficult.  The controls also feel a bit sloppy at times using a X360 controller (when trying to do angle fireballs).  Reminds me of the Jak II days.  Long ass levels with lots and lots of hard sections, especially for optional stuff.  These days I prefer Super Meat Boy/vvvvv type stuff where it's hard, but you only gotta get through 20-60 seconds.  GS has that Jak II or even Trials thing where you're like "fuck, this is hard; I want to turn it off and come back to it later, but I'm 35 mins into a stage after having passed multiple frustratingly difficult parts and if I don't finish the stage I'll have to do it all again" so you force yourself to keep playing until you beat the stage and endure the pain.

Basically I'm too old for this shit.

Pretty good game though and graphically it's friggen amazing.

I'm gonna check this out at some point, though trying to get all the crystals in world 8 of the Giana Sisters DS game destroyed me.

Play Giana Sisters DS if you haven't. Great great soundtrack

Ryu ga Gotoku 5 is really really awesome. I hope it gets localized or you guys bite the bullet and import it at some point. Totally worth it.

Oscar, you pick it up yet, or were you just playing the demo a couple weeks ago?

Yeah, I played the DS one.  It was easy and fun outside optional gem hunting.  TS is nightmare fuel (and also controls worse unfortunately :( )

back to FFXIII.  damn, i'm totally into this now, especially after the gigantic difficulty bump in ch.11.  I never get game overs in FF games, in this one I get a couple an hour it seems.
