Gladdos is written pretty much perfectly.  It's a shame the second one had to ham it up so hard.   A big part of what made 1 so good was the less is more approach...2 just feels like fan service for the people who repeated Portal 1 jokes + song lyrics for a year after the game came out.

Duh. It never came out in Engrish.

The first Half Life has a very simple 'escape this place' end goal pushing you forward with a muted story hanging out in the periphery, whereas the second game goes apeshit and starts locking you in rooms with talking heads to tell you about all these grand events and how you are the chosen one - omg the free man and you have Alyx holding conversations with your mute-ass and catching feels like a 13 year old. The game also goes through much more of a roller-coaster than the first one, changing locations all the time, giving you novelty toys (car, boat, ant lion thing) and taking them away before they become boring.

The shift between Portal and Portal 2 felt very similar to me.

so... err... mmm.... :whew

spoiler (click to show/hide)
i tried mugen souls

this game really really really want to be disgaea and it's not just a matter of sharing the artist, game goes like this,a little girl called chou chou (who's totaly not etna) her angel pal (who's totaly not bizarro flonne) and her servant (who's... well he sorts of looks like laharl but doesn't act like him,he just act subservient) decide to conquer the universe,to do so she has to conquer 7 world each following a theme (the first is fantasy, the second is japanese edo,the third is fire) she can do this because of her special power which force things that :uguu her to become her servant, of course since everybody has different taste in anime loli's she can actualy morph into different personality and each persona follows an anime trope and an added element

for example the fire persona is a dominatrix, the ice persona is a "sorry" girl, the wind persona is a Genki Girl who sort of look like yotsuba, the earth persona is a Tsundere, the light persona is a Dojikko (uh didn't know this one) the dark persona is an Emotionless girl and lastly there is a graceful persona

just to make the disgaea comparison even more heavier and pronunced each world is populated by a HERO and an OVERLORD,since they are the strongest creature on each planet, chou chou conclude that the fastest way to become the ruler of the planet is to turn them into peons... as such the plot pretty much follows the same formula of chou chou landing on a planet, encountering a wacky pair of characters and forcing them into the party

the first pair she meets include a stereotypical hero (you see they recognize that he's a hero because they find him breaking pots and searching drawers) and a princess (who's forced to wear a bikini for a while because it "gives great defense",so the hero says) but the character tends to get more diverse as you progress and it makes for a really big and colorfull cast of characters, one of the hero you meets really look and act like mid-boss,did i already mention how much this game reminds me of disgaea?

the disgaea comparison don't just end at the plot, when you enter battle there are crystal scattered that afflict your character in specific manner... just like that system... how was it called..... was it geo-panels? i have such an hard time remembering... oh and there is also a random dungeon feature of sort that it's called mugen field where you go trough 100 fight... it's sort of like... how was it called? was it the item world? oh and did i mention your character do team up attack? and one of them consist of the character doing a tower? and that you get to create your own character and then power up them by fusing?

so yeah i sort of digs the game for being disgaea-but-not-disgaea but unfortunately tragedy had to strike, the game is a chore to play, each planet is just a bunch of hallways that kinda looks like a bad ps2 game and yet the game somehow ends up slowing down once in a while, the best is in battle where sometimes you end up meeting 7-8 enemies all at once and the game gets to a crawl of something like 15-20 frame, like you are playing on an emulator, the battle animation are all skippable so the battle's go fast enough but sometimes the enemy freeze in their movement for 1-2 seconds and it's really annoying when there are 4 enemies acting all in a row

the real bad part comes from one of the subsystem of the game, you see as i said chou chou can turn people into peons (who are called prin... err shampuru and resemble cute peng... rabbits! rabbits, they resemble rabbits!) that include monsters so in battle you are supposed to switch your personality so that it match the monster personality and then tell it sweet stuff until he turns into a peon (which the game calls a "moe kill" :uguu) getting peon's make's you better at charming stuff and also power up your ship for ship battle's (you still get peons if you just kill enemy normaly but you get more if you charm the enemy)

the ship battle's play like rock-paper-scissor with the enemy giving you a hint about what he's going to do (think the duels in suikoden) but unfortunately they are also super tough,at the ship battle i'm in at the moment the enemy can kill me in 3 hits but i need to like something like 15 hits to defeat him so even if i win a lot of rounds it's still quite hard, obviosly i could make things easier by recruiting more peons but that's a pretty stupid artificial wall

another stupid artificial wall comes when you have to charm continent, each world has 3 map and you access to the other 2 maps by making the current map a peon, this consist of finding some hot spots and then charming them, unfortunately some of them require certain level of charms and some flat out ask you to defeat 300 monsters or ask for gold adding another layer of stupidness

everybody talks about "THE HORRIBLE SEXUALIZATION BLABLABLA" but it's not really that bad, there is a hot spring scene at the end of each chapter (in another disgaea-like twist at the end of each chapter you get a summary of previous event done by bizarro flonne) which is about as much as smutty as a fashion magazine and that's it... i did hear they censored some content and after making some research.... let's say it's fathermikeNSFW, and that it's a good thing it got censored

i think i'll probably watch some poor sob going trough it,i enjoy watching the game but not playing it if that makes sense and uh... wow i think i'm the first guy on the internet who's making proper impression of this game, yay me for suffering trough horrible jrpg :derp

My friend bought me Mugen Souls and yeah it's pretty pants. The intro is pretty funny in the fact it's the most :uguu thing I've ever seen in a game...

But truthfully, all those Idea Factory/Compile Heart - esque RPGs are junk. Small ugly random dungeons and too many grind-focused systems. The position-based combat systems do have some decent ideas behind them though, too bad they weren't used in better games.

well truth to be told i didn't know much about the game before trying it (because you know the only info i could pick about it was that it would taint my soul forever with loli's) but after thinking it for a while i feel foolish on that :lol

i sort of wanted to dodge disgaea because i played the first 2 for an ungodly amount of hours but after playing this i'm starting to be in the mood again... which would be the better pick anyway? disgaea 3 or disgaea 4?

Disgaea 4 has a map editor which is probably the best thing to happen to the series (even though they crippled the NA version map editor). Also has quite a bit of content even if you don't grind, so you might get your money's worth without having to go all lv9999.

low drop rates are the dumbest shit. I played through OoE without bothering with much of that because I'd rather cut myself than grind for loot. Anyway, game ain't that hard. The player character is very mobile and has buckets worth of attacking power.

I heard OOE was hard, then I played it and realized all the difficulty came from enemies soaking up damage, so you get bored and slip up. It's the only SOTN-style castlevania I didn't care for.

pinball arcade

got the wizard in cirqus voltaire and creature of the black lagoon,i wanted to do attack from mars too but i can't win that stupid video mode no matter what i do,any tips?

black rock shooter

see this logo where it says "JRPG"?

that's a big fucking lie

plot - in 20 years from now aliens invade the earth murdering all humanity except a platoon of the most generic marine's to ever grace a videogame which is to say something, but wait! the marine's somehow resurrect an anti-alien loli know as black rock shooter and now she get's to kill them all,the game plays nothing like a jrpg, there is no map,no shops,no towns and no money, you just pick a mission and then get put into a super boring enviroment where you get to murder some stuff and run some fetch quest for the marine and then you're done, the combat tries to be interessing by being action but not really playing like an action game, you shoot with square, block with x and dodge with circle, enemies run toward you and when they strike you need to dodge in time,it's sort of like a super dumbed version of punch out, that would make for an awesome game but the game throws you horde and horde of the same chump enemies and it's boooooooooooooooooring

3d dot heroes

this is basicaly zelda 1,even the enemies are the same, like if this was 1986 nintendo could have totaly sued them,as someone who never liked zelda much this sailed pretty much over my head

Disgaea 4

time to dig into this

popped Chakan and Final Fight CD into an x'eye I got on Craigslist.   Was surprised that FFCD was censored-- no underboob.  no "sexy" in the background, but one of the doors in the first stage still says "dick" ???

Chakan is fucking awesome.  Ridiculously difficult, but fair and you get infinite lives.  has a hub world.  requires a lot of familiarity with the levels.  combat is fair and you get hurt the most when you don't pay attention.  use items in some levels to get through parts of other levels.  Hey wait a minute...

I finally jumped on the Minecraft train and bought it yesterday. I didn't realize you needed to eat. I'm not a fan of it, seems like a chore to deal with.

Other than that the game is a ton of fun... until I lost my stuff in a pit from a skeleton with a bow :'(

there is no map,no shops,no towns and no money, you just pick a mission and then get put into a super boring enviroment where you get to murder some stuff

Wrapped up From Dust's main story, got 100% vegetation on all maps, and completed the tribal Memory. Just have to do the Challenges and then a "less than 5 villages lost" run, and I'll have 100%

Wonderful game. Really pretty, too.

How many times did you have to restart the last mission? :D
