Intrusion 2. Was expecting a janky-ass flash game and instead I got an AWESOME janky-ass flash game. Once I learned to stop conserving ammo and really get stuck in it's fun as hell. The first boss was a little  dull but was immediately followed up with a level where you're sliding down a mountain on the boss' wreckage whilst trying to gun down the pilots that ejected from it, all the while trying to avoid snowboarding mech-ninja and the avalanche behind you. The 2nd and the final bosses get pretty inventive and are some the better ones I've seen in a while. Oh, and the soundtrack is metal as fuck.

I finished Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon.

What an awesome game! So much better than Far Cry 3. The ending sequence was soooooo awesome:

spoiler (click to show/hide)
I lost my shit when the Rock vs Ivan Drago music from Rocky IV started playing when you were riding the robo dragon. Soooo cool. Also all the egg puns when you burned the eggs were awesome. "I like mine, egg-stra crispy" - lmfao

Just gotta clear a few more side missions and finish the collectibles for 400/400

Finished Crash Course 2 this morning, EXCEPT for the Win-a-Tournament 'cheevo. Everyone quits a Tournament after anyone other than them wins a race. Jesus, what dicks. And it's a game design problem. The game offers insufficient completion-only rewards.

God DAMN, there are some hard Course Stars to collect. I mean, seriously, the last one, I was at it for an hour. When I finally got it, I have no idea how I did it, and probably couldn't do that Mister Miyagi shit ever again.

Anyway, Scenester, you're up; come do a tournament with me so I can shelve this thing!

Guacamelee - Probably about halfway, maybe 2/3rds in.  Game is a great metroidvania with some really hardcore platforming and good combat.  Pretty nice step up from Tales from a Blob for Drinkbox.

Also picked up Puppeteer since it's my kind of whimsy/charm/good art game.  Looking forward to getting started in that.

And the Yakuza Isshin screens are making me really want to beat punch some thugs in the face so thinking about playing Yakuza 3 finally and getting back to the series.  Ideally would like to play 3 & 4 so when I play Isshin I know who these new characters are and appreciate them in a feudal Japan setting, but dunno if I can play two full 20-30 hour Yakuza games by February without getting burnt out.

Leechmonger and Old Hero are both really easy fights. You just have to figure out their weaknesses.

I remember leechmonger being so easy you could probably sleepwalk through it. Is he the one who spits that black stuff that attaches to your character and corrodes or whatever? That dude (thing?) had hella shit stats; did no damage and took plenty.

Man, I'm glad to have Crash Course 2 out of the way. I'll probably still play it; it's a great game. Erryone complained about the F2P stuff, but there's nothing to actually spend money on. If you play through to getting the Achievements, you'll earn enough Stars to get everything, and then some.

yeah its a good game! The F2P stuff is garish, but that's about it. In terms of progression and unlocking content, it can all be achieved via normal play.

The reality is it's a free game, with half assed monetisation tacked on.

That part was so good. Still it was behind the best part of Guacamelee!: the Jaguar Javier fight on Hard. That shit was transcending: no lava, no spikes, no bullshit meteors or traps. Just old school mano-a-mano whooping.

You still have the shield colors but yea it was nice to have a mostly mano-a-mano throw down.

Hard difficulty should be interesting also.

Wreckateer and WSOP: Full House Pro. Continuing the free-to-play crap pile for no discernible reason. A hundred good games in the backlog, and I keep coming back to these and Clash of Clans.

Wreckateer has controls which should be reserved for penitents in the mid-regions of Hades. There are Kinect input errors which boggle my mind. WSOP is prolly good, but I don't really understand poker well enough. I'm learning , though. CoC is pretty great; I'm running over 1500 trophies, having trouble cracking 1600.

Finished the main campaign in Sound Shapes along with trying a bunch of user levels...decent art meets music meets game thing.  The main campaign had some cool level designs from an art/music perspective with the Beck stages and the Superbros stages.  But the gameplay is too damn slippery for stuff that wants to be pure skill challenge.  Like LBP seems like most of the user levels are junk, but some of the "specially chosen" stages were really well crafted and as good as the main campaign or better, except with more janky (got stuck and had to redo the stage from start in one >_<).

Was nice to run through once and mess around in the community stuff.  I'm sure there's a few dozen excellent user stages worth checking out, but otherwise the main thing I got from it is to find out if the 3 Beck songs in the campaign were ever released separately as actual "songs" because they're quality Beck tunes.

Also tried out Dragon's Crown finally and the main thing I got from it was the soundtrack is great and I miss Sakimoto tunes and that I'm not really interested in playing the game (like most Vanillaware titles).

The TA ratio for WSOP is massive, it's a major effort to 400/400. I was gonna check it out, but I'm not gonna torment myself with that shit  :P #cheevowhore4lyfe

Yeah, it's pretty crazy. It's very grindy, and some of the Achievement methods which look like easy one-offs require actually need substantial in-game purchases to pull off. I think they're all attainable through free play, like Crash Course 2. But I'm good at CC2, and I'm pretty crap at poker.

I've been playing Volgarr the Viking, a $10 indie game from some of the key people behind Shinobi 3DS.

The game basically has two sets of stages: the normal path and the supposedly more difficult 'Valkyrie' path (I don't think it's harder - just different). To access the Valkyrie path, you have to collect an orb from a treasure chest that will only get dropped when Volgarr has a full set of gear. After you clear a stage, you're sent to the treasure room where you can choose which path you want to take. If you choose the Valkyrie path, the orbs you collected will act as lives, so if you die a whole bunch you'll get sent back to the normal stages (where you have infinite lives). This is a pretty cool concept imo, since the branching path essentially doubles the game's content without making it overlong. (30-40 minutes is the perfect length for an arcade-style game imo, and that's how long a normal playthrough of either path will take with a few deaths here and there).

The only thing I don't really like about the game are the bosses. They're not bad, but they have really simple patterns, so they're not all that interesting to fight once you understand how to counter them. It would be perfect if they had more health and 2 or 3 more attacks. I also didn't like the scoring system at first, but I think it's starting to grow on me. It just puts way too much emphasis on speed.

Guacamelee

TREETOPS

Yeah, this almost made me hate the game overall even though it's optional.  Got up to the final gears part on my first try but eh, too frustrating, gave up and went and did the other optional stuff.  Could do it if I wanted to spend a few hours of stress and frustration to get the final powerup and achievements but in the end it's a stupid achievement and sense of satisfaction that I won't care about in 3 days.  Would rather enjoy life for hours instead.

All that's left now is a few more challenges in El Inferno if I want (Did like 3/4ths of it already) and then the final dungeon.  I like the combat challenges way more than the platforming challenges because I swear there's some weird lag and hitbox issues with the platforming that can make some of the extreme stuff like treetops way more frustrating than it should be.  It's like you have to jump and do everything 1/4th second early because the hitbox extends beyond the actual character sprite or something.

Eh, still cool game though.  Combat challenges in the pollo cavern were a blast to play.

I'd like it if the controls were tighter.  It was like it wanted to be Super Meat Boy (especially with that last section with the gears) but it couldn't because the controls were way stiffer than SMB.  Also there should've been unlimited checkpointing like SMB on the gears area so you can keep trying instead of slowing losing life each time you mess up and then having to do the first two sections again (granted the first two sections are pretty easy when you know the path).

Dude the Treetops ain't hard. The 2nd time I did them they took me only 4 minutes, tops. How can you even die on the Gears part? No really, they are easy. You just have to focus on the middle of the TV screen, "get in the zone" and plan your finger movements on the pad in advance.

The Sierra Morena challenge with disappearing platforms is way harder. That shit made my blood boil.

hmm need to check that one out

Yeah I think it's good to wade through dreck for awhile sometimes, makes the good stuff sooooo much better. It's also good to know how causal iOS filth feel ALL THE TIME. Imagine a life where your favourite games were Angry Birds and Candy Crush Saga. Imagine how horrible that would be. Be thankful that you are intelligent enough to make a choice regarding your entertainment, a lot of people don't have that luxury!

So I've been able to borrow my friend's 360 recently since I had to sell mine awhile back for food money and I'm finally getting around to playing Modern Warfare 2 on a 360, with a gamepad. Wow. Why did I take this long to do this? The controls are perfect. It's almost enough to sell me on an Xbox One just so I can play Titanfall on a controller as well.

Oh and I guess I split the cost of GTA V with a friend and got in on that Toys R Us coupon so I'll be playing that soon, but I decided to play MW2 first cuz I keep it 2009 :patel

Installed D2 on my netbook for my ARPG fix, now that I can't play PoE for the time being. Playing a laid back Necro using skeletons and Corpse Explosion for damage with some curses for debuffs and CC. I had to grind a couple levels to get Decrepify so I could beat Duriel, but it was smooth sailing otherwise. Let's see how far I get before I can finally fix my PC.

Also played the D3 demo on 360. Good port, although I probably shouldn't have picked hard difficulty from the get go, as I didn't really want to grind for gear to not get two-shot. It did highlight that monsters still have very long reach though, but the dodge roll helped mitigate that. Provided I remembered the option...

I only tried the Barb, but the controls work fine, as did the interface. I found myself swinging at the air when monsters walked out of range and the trigger seemed a bit wonky as well, occasionally activating the assigned skill twice in a row. I think it only happens when you don't depress it all the way and then slowly take your finger off. I'm sure that I'd get used to these minor issues though, so whatever. The UI was fine, too. You naturally click and scroll through lists a lot more, but it worked well enough outside of having to manually bring up a detailed description of items you want to compare. If they only displayed the item name and those helpful arrows and automatically expanded the highlighted items it would have worked just as well, but it's a minor issue as well.
Loot-wise you can definitely see that monsters drop a lot less loot overall. I wasn't even fully equipped with whites for the longest time. The first rares I saw were on the vendor and way out of my price-range. The Skeleton King dropped the first ones, I think. Feels much more like D2, but it's still the same tiered loot, so "eh" for me.
Seems like a good port overall, but I won't be double dipping.

Volgarr would probably be my GOTY if Dodonpachi Saidaioujou hadn't come out. I might be jumping the gun a little, but I'd say it can easily go toe-to-toe with the best action/platformers. It's an excellent game.

Im 30% into TLOU. Game is really good, just annoys me when ellie gets in the way of me or she blurts some shit out with Clickers nearby.

After I finish TLOU ill trade it in for hopefullu Fifa 14, or Heavy Rain, Killzone 2 and UC2.
Then Ill focus on them and GTA5...

That said with PSN+ i got so many other games to play for the 50 euro I spent I dunno where to start. Ass Creed 3, SR3, UC3, Jak Trilogy, Payday, Spec Ops The Line, Mafia 2, Stealth. Then in october Far Cry 3, Gianna Sisters...
I really dont  get what the business model is for ps+ cause shit is crazy!

Yeah, I'm more into action games. I got Fire Emblem Awakening a while ago, but I've only put a few hours into it. Turn-based games just usually don't hook me unless they have a really unique system (like Valkyria) or an interesting story/characters/setting or something. :-[

Valkyria has some interesting mechanics and good level design to explore on challenge runs, but otherwise it's mostly overshadowed by scout order rushes and such. It's a good mix of action/TBS though.

Doritos Crash Course 2 - Got all the course stars and silver medals. Just need to grind out another 30 runs on Amazon 3 for the 75 objectives cheev. 30 mins O' grindan then I'm flushing this turd. It's a good game, but the presentation is pretty gaudy.

Splinter Cell: Conviction - Almost completed the campaign on "Realistic" (hard) difficulty. It's a really really fun and well designed game! All the gadgets and upgrades make taking out enemies a cinch! Get spotted? Use a flashbang or EMP and run away/shoot everyone. Use the sonar goggles to tag a buncha dudes then execute them all! Climb into air ducts and kung fu their asses! The story is typical spy/govt. intrigue BS but who cares. You are super spy man killing 1000 dudes with ease! Love it. (I havent played any other Splinter Cell games)

Killer is Dead - Almost finished my first run in this (up to Chapter 9). The game definitely gets better further in, as you have access to more moves and upgrades. Love the art, and the story and characters are really cool. It's basically NMH3.

Puzzle Quest 2 - Been trying to finish off the 200/200 in this, but I can only manage like 3 battles before my eyelids are drooping. Soooooo boring. Good game to play before bed!

in between GTA5 i've been playing Rayman Legends on my Vita

it's fantastic. i'm enjoying it much more than Origins.

and weirdly, I would recommend playing this game on a platform with a touch screen because the Murphy touch-screen only levels are amazingly fun.

Yeah, for as tight as their game design is, the aesthetic in both games is really poorly realized. Everything is overly saturated, and it can become very hard to tell what's happening at times, due to bad visual language.

Great game, my favorite free game, favorite avatar-using game, etc. Happy to be done.

Guacamelee

So I know I'll beat it on my next try, but still, the room in the final stage where you have to fight 3 of those wizards that shoot full screen lightning pillars is absolutely bullshit.  If you roll dodge through one, 75% of the time you'll get hit by another one when you come out of the dodge frames.   Unless I'm missing some secret to it, it just seems like bad bad encounter design since the randomness of where the enemies are and when they shoot the pillars can create pillar sets that you can't dodge through.

Wat.

Where is this room? Is this a special Challenge room in the Pollo Mines? I 1000'd the game and I don't even remember the part you are having troubles with.

Piece of advice for Guacamelee: when in doubt - Olmec Headbutt.

i think he means those enemy that turns into lightining column,if a lot of them start doing it,it gets really annoying... but like i said just gather them all with throws (headbutts work too!) and kill them all in a single attack

Hey Sceneman did you 1000 Resonance of Fate? You were pretty close to doing this last month.

Nah, it's on my "cheevo mop up pile". I finished the story but only got like 75% through the battle arena before I had to put it down, had to have a break from the grind. I also need to grind more bronze coins for the AP ammo so I can clear Neverland. I'll definitely get back to it soon.

My main gripe is with the UI. It's so ugly and IN YOUR FACE. HEY DID YOU KNOW YOU CAN BUY COINS?! IF YOU RUN OUT OF STARS, BUY COINS! Guess its par for the course for F2P stuff. The gameplay is great though.

I went back to Max Payne 3 and cleared a couple more stages, and it made me realise how much I appreciate well designed UI (Max Payne 3 has some of the slickest UI design in the business, though).

Yesterday I bought Outland on the PS3 which I called garbage back when Guacamelee launched. Well... it's no Guacamelee or Super Metroid for sure but it is enough on this barren Metroidvania landscape. You have your usual main hub area which branches into different worlds, blocked paths that can only be opened by abilities you learn later on (ground stomp, wall run etc.), World Bosses etc.

The combat feel very stiff though and "mechanical". There is nothing frantic about it, it's very barebones. Air control is super tight, tho. Graphics and music (especially music!) are wonderful.

God do I miss a proper Metroid game or even Konami's Metroidvanias...

yeah Outland was mostly just a tease, could have been so much greater. As you said though, fantastic music. It's a solid game and I really enjoyed 200/200ing it

I just want IGAvania back  :'( Even Castlevania HD 2 would be most welcome

If a CV HD 2 was announced and happened before the new machines price dropped at all I'd cave and get one of them so fucking fast.

Outland's still my favorite game in the metroidvania genre this gen (though it's really not metroidvania, just has a hub).  The way they worked ikaruga bullet patterns into the platforming and with really awesome combat (yeah it's simple and stiff, but feels like Devil May Cry in that way; very mechanical combo-ing; which I love), and speed running made for so much fun.  Plus it looked great and had an ok story.  And the final boss, holy shit that was good.  Real challenge, but fair and excellent in every way.  Reminded me of the best boss fights from the 16bit->PS2 era.
