volgars style was like the standard for late-80s early-90s games so why the complaining?

levels in sidescrollers would have a variety of challenges that you had to master to progress. they gave you 1-3 checkpoints because each challenge and each level itself was very short and the ability to power thru them would be very high if you had checkpoints every 5 seconds. yes you can make a game with very high difficulty in between each checkpoint, but you still end up with a game where most players will hit a wall sooner or later. the old-school style forces you to control your stress while mastering each challenge as you do it over and over again, so that later levels can introduce much more punishing gauntlets.

it worked fine in hundreds of games before; you really gonna shit on all those 16-bit classics? :what

you guys are a bunch of taco,i said i made it to stage 3 (actualy i got up to stage 4 in the meanwhile) so of course it's doable, but is it fun? no! because it took me 30 minutes to go through stage 3,when the actual stage is only 5 minute long and 20 minute of those were repeating a dull boring section that i did so many time i can do it blind now, some of these repeat happened simply because i didn't know there was a trap ahead and it took me by surprise... a lot of them happened because i didn't know how to dodge a boss attack (after a while i gave up and looked at someone doing it on youtube to get done with it) if there was a checkpoint before it i could have got it on my own but of course that can't happen when i have to redo the 3 minute section before it everytime i want a shot at the boss...

i don't find this as mastering the game, going through the whole stage without getting hit and accessing the bonus stage is mastering the game... replaying the same section over and over is just frustating and hiding this bullshit behind "it's because game of old were hard and you just aren't good enough" is twice as stupid... in a game like ghost'n goblins this works because the whole stage is hard,in volgarr it doesn't because the first half is boring and easy and the second is not and the result is that you are damned to repeat the boring part over and over and over...

like this is stage 2

imagine repeating the first minute and half everytime you fall of the boat... does the first minute and half looks hard or fun to play? no! it's there just to say "oh look! these new enemies jump and these slide!" a minute and half is nothing but when the death pile's up,so does the time playing the boring part

but really it's a good game so i still want to trudge it over

FWIW, that video is the original version of stage 2. The developer shortened the stage with a patch because they agreed it felt too long.

I'm almost done with the first Mass Effect. Recieved a couple PSN cards for muh birthday, and I am wondering what to get. My options are Lara Croft and the Guardian Of Light, Lone Survivor DC, I Am Alive, Outland, Okami HD and Hotline Miami.

I am thinking I'll pick Lara Croft and Okami HD. I don't really do that indie game shit. What do you guys think?

Lara Croft and the Guardian Of Light is a really fun game to play with somebody co-op either online or couch. But if you are playing it single player I would pass and try something else.

I Am Alive is criminally underrated. An absolutely fantastic game, great story and atmosphere. You can see the development hell in the final product (a bit janky here and there) but personally I think it nails the post apocalyptic stuff. Very suspenseful and grim game.

It is. Avoid. But Stoney is right about Lara Croft; if you don't have a partner for at least the main campaign it loses a lot of what makes the game a memorable experience. I'd join you but I'm only on Xbox :(

Oh, I don't know about "cool;" I'd still prefer that you actually pay for games that you like, and occasionally even for games you dislike. People who copy games, particularly people who copy nearly exclusively -- without ever paying for what they enjoy playing, are parasites.

I understand you're both (a) poor, and (b) a student, so I hope you'll pay for games when you're gainfully employed.

My sealed, mint copy of Shadow Tower for PS1 finally came in today and I can't stop marveling at it. This CD jewel case hasn't touched open air since 1997, and I feel a little naughty opening it. It must happen, however, since I've been dying to play this game. Will post impressions once I've built up the strength to defile it :(

Shining Force 3, which I bought from Positive Touch a few months back... it's really good so far, even though the polygonal graphics are horrible, as are the really blurry rendered sprites that Camelot was so very fond of... Shining Force 1 and 2 had some really great visuals in battle, but these are a mess. Ahhh well. The story seems decent so far, I'm not one for convoluted medieval political dramas that so many SRPGs have for stories, so something a bit more cut-and-dry is appreciated every now and then. Plus I like how your heroes are called "Republicans" (being from the Republic and all)... that plus a townsperson complaining about the "spread the wealth" policies of the empire was kinda funny. The settings have been interesting so far - the town haunted by poltergeists, a town with a train running through it that most citizens can't afford (one guy gave up his house just to ride once on the train), it's got that "character" that we all loved about oldskool RPGs.

So yeah, it's been a while since I played an SRPG and I'm really enjoying myself.

Difficulty can be broken down into measurable skills of different types. Execution is a pretty well recognized skill, being able to enter a set of inputs without failing. Ironman modes where you can't save at all are an example of execution, or something as short as a street fighter combo. Other games might focus more on other kinds or amounts of skill.

People have more fun with forms and amounts of difficulty that are appropriate for their level of skill. I don't think Volgarr would be "mediocre" if it had multiple difficulty levels to cater to a larger variety of player skill levels. There are arcade games with multiple difficulty modes. Of course that does take more dev time and effort.

tl;dr - It wouldn't hurt if Volgarr had an easy mode for players like magus.

Tiesto it's too bad the rest of SF3 was not localized, but I think there are fan translation patches out there.

well i finished volgarr

i don't know if the stage's got shorter and easier or if i got better at the game but after stage 3 i ended up repeating stuff a lot less (in fact i think i died around 4-5 times at best on each stage) the final stage has a shitload of checkpoints,in fact there are more checkpoint in the final stage than in the rest of the game all together

it's a cool game but seriously it can get frustating and annoying (i guess the worst part was stage 2 but icono said they reworked the stage so i guess it's a moot point) and most of the time a lot of the difficulty come from not knowing what to do (is this enemy going to jump at me? is he going to dodge this attack? can i parry this?) rather than being able to do it,in fact everytime i got stuck or didn't want to die at the boss,i watched someone else going through it and things got magicaly better

I picked up RE4 ps3 because it was 5 bucks due to psn plus. The controls are terrible. Just like they were on 360. Gc is the only controller worthy of re4. Fuck. They mapped the knife and gun to fucking bumpers. GOD.

The length it takes to save on ps3 version is HORRIBLE.

:snoop

Gc version is still definitive. I've owned RE4 on gc (twice), wii, 360 and ps3. Either the controls are TOO GOOD (wii version which makes the game too easy) or unnatural (360, ps3). Goddamit.

Could you not just use a GC controller with the wii version? That way you get the extra content and your favourite controls. Wonder if I can get it to run on dolphin now without all the little hiccups.

Wii version is the best version cuz you get the ps2 extras (which are shit btw aside from the costumes) but can use gc pad.

Scene, you can't reconfigure the buttons. There's only two types and type 2 is way worse than type 1. I keep going to L2 and R2 out of habit. RE4 was made for triggers in mind. But I'm getting used to it.

I can't run games in dolphin.

RE4 is still the best game made, though. My opinion. Every time I play the first run on a new system, the first run - wii version aside -  is ALWAYS challenging. I've beaten RE4 about 15-18 times and the first run is STILL always challenging. Proof is in the pudding. Just like Jet Set Radio, the true proof that a game is a classic and masterfully designed is if you master the game and still be challenged. GOAT.

You should get a weapon you can actually reinforce early in the game. Pick a weapon that scales with the highest stat you have, like a spear if you're DEX or a greatsword/club with STR. Granted, the Drake Sword is a pretty fun weapon; but you'll want something more reliable to carry you through the game.

tbf its doing a good job right now since it still one shots most of these fools but yea I will more likely have to jump on something else eventually (especially since the sword needs special shit to upgrade and that could be harder/more annoying to find).

Once I can wrap my head around the smiting stuff I might try my luck.

The Guided Fate Paradox

much better than disgaea d2 since the plot is actualy interessing and not a total cookie cutter boring one! the plot follow an average boring student called renya, one day he wins a raffle and it turns out that what he won was nothing less than godhood so now as god he's forced to execute the wish of the people,i tought this would be a boring premise but each wish make's for pretty silly and interessing scenario...
spoiler (click to show/hide)
the first one for example is about cinderella who's sick of repeating the same tale over and over and over so she wish for an alternate ending to the tale, the second is about a wussy zombie who doesn't have the courage to attack people
[close]
it's really good

the cast is pretty big too and a lot of the character feature shady motive's under their cheerfull premise which it's such a huge improvement over disgaea 4 and their "i have a single gimmick which i'm going to repeat ad nauseum" thin paper personality

the actual game is not much of a stretch from ZHP,for those that haven't played ZHP this is a roguelike but the catch is that everytime you reset to level 1 your level get stored and everytime you store certain amount of level your base stat get bigger so you always start at level 1 but after doing 100 level your level 1 character will start as strong as a level 10 character for example... there is also another sub system where you can tweak your stat by placing panels and items on a board which get bigger and bigger as you store more level

Difference's with ZHP and general gameplay stuff

as for difference with ZHP,panel are now gotten by bursting items, what this mean is that as you use an item, the item improve until it reach 100% then after it reach 100% it burst and suddenly degrade's to half it's power, after this happen you get a panel and the weapon has to be repaired by going back to town (but after repairing,it get stronger)

you are also now followed by an AI companion,he does allright, you can give it order and if it die nothing bad happen, heck in fact the AI doesn't even follow you in boss fight so it's never a bother

the boss fight are pretty good too,all of them have some gimmick which you have to abuse to win... in the zombie scenario, you are attacked by a bunch of zombie and you can't attack the boss until you defeat all of the smaller one,but the zombie resurrect after a while and the only way to stop them from doing so is to cover them with grave's,the boss itself also tells you where he's going to attack so you can dodge his attack and attract minor enemies so they get damaged instead

also now every piece of equipment has a skill in it instead of just some of them,oh and if you equip the same weapon twice you get a new special skill which is usualy pretty powerfull and well worth the effort of tracking two equal weapon

enemies now have weakness so having the right piece of equipment with the right special attack helps a lot, they also have a lot of different skills for example there is a turtle with a pretty powerfull area attack which completly ruins your shit if you are surrounded or paralyzed but otherwise can be easily avoided simply by walking out of range, there are shield enemies that stop you from hitting enemies with special skill and force you to use your puny normal attack and so on

oh and they finaly put a way to keep your equipment safe from the harsh reality of perma-death,you give your equipment to this NPC and he gives you the ability to call it at any moment you want, the catch is that you can only do so a limited number of times so you can't do the whole dungeon with it

the difficulty is ok... i got through the first two dungeon with no problem but i actualy hit a wall on the third one and had to grind for a while and re-think my equipment choice a little

tl;dr - i'm enjoying a NIS game again after the lukewarm disgaea 4 and disgaea d2

I've been burning through LucasArts adventure games on my tablet. So far I've finished Curse of Monkey Island, The Dig, and Sam & Max Hit the Road. I've still got Day of the Tentacle and Full Throttle to go, but I'll probably have them finished up in a couple weeks.

Deus Ex: HR Director's Cut
It's DX:HR, nothing more to say there.

Technically it's a bit of a mess though. I had to futz with the registry to solve a massive performance problem. Sub 30 fps with settings that used to give me 50-60 in the original release. The stuttering everyone was complaining about when it came out is now back too it seems. There are a few spots (in the police station, around the basketball court) where the framerate tanks dramatically, from around 60 to sub 20. Flickering shadows near the gas station and other places, some missing or borked textures. This isn't the cleanest edition of the game.

However, the biggest draw to playing this again is the commentary track. I don't like that the triggers for it are invisible, but it's pretty good so far. They don't just self-congratulate themselves, openly say what changed, what was cut and why, etc. It was especially interesting to see that one of the early reactive bits (the hostages in the first mission are already dead if you spend too much time exploring Sarif HQ) almost didn't make it in.
They even address the black homeless woman whose accent raised a bunch of eyebrows. In short: it was a last minute addition, they had four actors to chose from of which one was a black woman, they let her pick the accent (no word on what other directions they gave her), they were blind to it until the 'controversy', but they understand what the problem is. The audio guy refers to her as a "bag lady" and said the model doesn't look as crazy as they had liked.

I...enjoyed about half of it. It's just so fucking long. By the time I got to the vampire castle I quit. It's a gorgeous game and I had fun.

guided fate paradox is really, really, really good... this game should be on the ps2 with stuff like makai kingdom and soul nomad instead of all the sad titles on ps3,the stage 4 boss is amazing

spoiler (click to show/hide)
the 4th scenario involve a knight of an invaded kingdom so for the boss you have to defend his castle from a swarm of monster, you stand on top and the monster invade by every direction, but you have cannons to shoot them from afar and to get to you they have to raise wooden stairs which you can kick down which buy yourself more time before you get completly swarmed,it's friggin awesome!
