I thought it was a bit like DMC, don't those games sell relatively well? If it fails, it will probably be because it's hard to get an idea of direction from what they keep showing. Having flashy bits is great and all, but is there a cohesive style and narrative, or is it just a crazy Best of Wacky Action collage?

The thing about Bayonetta compared to a lot of these other "wacky-Jappy" (™,Prole) games is that Bayonetta doesn't take itself too seriously.  It's kind of self-aware that it's being wacky and pokes some fun at itself and at some of the other games.  Despite being completely out-there, the story has also been more coherent than the usual fare.  The characters are likeable (Bayonetta is kind of a smug bitch, but that seems to be the standard for witches in the game's world) and a lot of the dialogue is amusing (on purpose!).  But I agree with Kranz that you will probably find it distinguished mentally-challenged.   :lol  It does not have any teenage, emo, angst-ridden, spiky-haired typical J-RPG cookie-cutter protagonists, however, thankfully.  (I guess almost none of the Capcom/Clover/Platinum games do, though)

Without spoiling anything, Bayonetta has a bit of amnesia, so she learns about her past with the player.  There's nothing deep here though; the basic plot is that Bayonetta has come back from hell as a kind of bounty hunter, killing angels to avoid torture down below.  The game world exists on three planes (human world, heaven, and hell), and there's also purgatory inbetween.  I think that's where Bayonetta is, and if you played the demo and were wondering why there's these weird-looking grey/transparent NPCs walking around, it's because they're on the human plane.  When Bayonetta talks to humans, BTW, she sounds pretty fucking scary and is like a poltergeist to them.

On the wackyness scale, I'd rate the game a Godhand, but all the enemy types have been more "serious."  There's no question that if you're looking for a darker, gorier, moodier, more violent game, that God Of War is going to be your thing.  For me, Bayonetta is just more satisfying to play.  I would imagine I'll feel the same way about DMC3 and DMC4 (well, DMC4 seems to have emo-Nero) whenever I finally get around to them, too.  I can say that on normal difficulty, Bayonetta's been easier to play than the DMC games, but I also hear it ramps up around stage four, which is where I am now...

Quote
Also, is it actually playable by people less than great at action games? And I don't mean the win button, but more general approachability. I like God of War for a bunch of reasons, but none of those would matter much if the game wasn't approachable and satisfying even for someone with my weaksauce action game skills.

Absolutely.  I don't consider myself to be any kind of master at these 3D action games.  You can play this game just doing the same one or two combos (done just like GoW) and nothing else, and still win easily enough.  The game ranks your performance and also has online leaderboards, but that's for the hardcore.  There's nothing inapproachable or hard to do in this game.  My favorite attack so far is the breakdancing gun-play move, and you do that by simply holding down the R-trigger.  Tricky!   ;)  I've gotten more than one pure platinum award (meaning I killed every enemy with style and without getting hit) using mainly that move.  Really, the mechanics at the core are simply attacking and dodging.  No blocking or anything; the enemy attacks (and you often get a visible warning of this), you dodge with the R trigger and attack.  Timing the dodge right at the last moment will put you into a state where you move normally and everyone else is slow, so you can unleash more attacks.  And when you're really kicking ass and have enough magic built up, you can finish off enemies with "torture attacks," which are these wacky cartoon-like violent finishing moves.

Get yourself a J-account and try out the demo...the 360 version, that is.  Don't even bother with the PS3 version.

I think there's really no point in being an action game elitist.  There aren't enough games in the genre.  I love action games and I am VERY HAPPY HAPPY when there are several as long as they aren't of the crap variety.

I'm a super "DMC3 is superior to everything" person, but I still love me some Ninja Gaiden, GoW.  I'm sure I'll enjoy Bayonetta AND GoW3 without having to compare them.  Unless of course GoW3 sucks, which is possible but hopefully not.

I don't normally care to compare games like that, but that's just the kind of impression that Bayonetta has left on me.  The GoW3 demo's frame rate and sluggishness didn't help, either.  Thankfully Sony Santa Monica isn't Sega, and there's no way the game will stay like that.   ;)

I started Star Ocean 4 again, gonna try to finish it this time around. About 17 hours in on Disc 2, and finally had one of the few interesting cutscenes with Eleyna. The scene ran so long my controller turned off and I thought the game froze for a second  :lol

The combat is pretty fun at least. It's just everything else that sucks shit. Edge is such a whiny bitch.  :-\

The guy who voices Capell in IU also voices Faize in SO4, which is another reason why I hate that character.

Still, I actually liked IU, which is more than I can say for SO4. I gotta finish it before the International version comes, otherwise I'll really regret buying it.

I decided to update the homebrew shit on my Wii so I'm fine when Mario comes out.  While I was at it, I tried out Castlevania Rebirth.  It's pretty awesome even if it's really easy.  One weird thing is that they made the jump a lot more forgiving, yet they didn't include moves from Rondo.

I was interested because the trailer showed a part where you're mowing down stupid Roman soldiers with a future gun, but my friend who played an assload of the game said it never comes. It's mostly just jacking off muskets in the civil war.

Castlevania The Adventure Rebirth. Great game so far. I agree that it's a bit too easy though, but turning on the shitty jump (there's an option for classic player control i.e. not being able to control your jump in mid-air) makes for a better challenge/

The game is littered with unfinished, oddly finished and sometimes just plain goofy bits, and seems to fluctuate between total brilliance and complete failure most of the time. For me, it eventually landed on the total brilliance side, but it's never far from other side. Best most critically fucked game ever.

"Enjoying" the latest in GTA IV improvements-via-DLC. My friends were all giggling their way through the Free Mode in Gay Tony so I am anxious to find out what the hullabaloo was about. I have "enjoying" in quotes because after Brutal Legend and Saints Row, the protagonists in GTA IV series games all feel like they're running through molasses.

I had to replay the first cage fighter mission ("Mammi's Boy") several times because of sluggish controls.

Counters are stunningly effective, but stupid hard to pull off. I was reminded of the original GTA IV Achievement for "10 melee counters in 4 minutes" and what a stupid pain in the ass it was to unlock. I appreciate them trying to find a reason to revive their improved melee combat, but hand-to-hand was a lot more fun in Bully. Anyway, I hope I get to set the guy on fire who is hassling Luiz' mammi.

Just finished Star Ocean 4 last night. The last 13 or so hours are pretty decent to be honest. The combat is good and the graphics can look unbelievably great at times, but everything else is just abysmal. There are maybe three likable characters throughout the entire game. On the JRPG totem poll for this generation, I'd put it above Eternal Sonata and maybe Infinite Undiscovery. Now I just need to play another 250 hours to 1000 it!  :rofl

Up next: Culdcept + Ace Combat 6 + more Tekken, Forza 3 and Smackdown. Maybe some Samurai Warriors 2/Dynasty Warriors Gundam 2 as well.

Nah, for me it was mashing R and L. Putting 9 or 10 pinks (1% health/mana regen each) in the bonus board is self sustaining for special attack spam. Doing a bunch of Chain Combos with Meracle and Edge was pretty fun.

But then again I like Dynasty Warriors, so I have low standards. :-*

My team was pinky elf slut, distinguished mentally-challenged angel slut, goth emo elf and emo edge, never played with meracle (catgirl right?) even though i've heard good things about her in combat, the two sluts were for magic and healing and the other two just pure button mashing, game went easy at level 70 i think (thanks to edge final skill).

and i want to dip in your low standards so bad.

Yeah, Meracle's the catgirl. She can do a 4 hit combo that launches on the final hit, then you can juggle him a bunch with her specials. She pretty much dominates. My team was Meracle, Edge, Myuria (pink elf) and Bacchus/Sarah. I'd use Bacchus for regular enemies (black hole sphere lol) and Sarah for extra heals/res on bosses. I was using Arumat, but I swapped him out for Myuria and her 6x icicle attack and healing.

I don't think I had anyone's final skill by the end of the game. My highest character was Edge at 60 and my lowest was Sarah at like 49. I skipped as much optional crap as I possibly could. I don't think I even created a single item with Welch's station. I'll save all that for my next playthrough(s).

Totally planned to play GTA IV DLC tonight but ended up starting Brütal Legend instead, and as a rarity I blew through three missions in quick succession instead of wandering around the map. The story is becoming very interesting, but I'm sad for the direction it's taking. Man, Lita is an annoying little strumpet. The Baron is badass though.

Sure hope they fix the graphics hiccups before I finish the game. The stutter gives me camera-induced motion sickness.

Uncharted 2, Tales of Vesperia.  Currently have Fallout 3 GOTY (DLC portion), Ratchet and Clank Future 2, Scribblenauts, Mario and Luigi 3 and Puzzle Quest 2 (started this already at least, but its backburnered at the moment), Professor Layton 2 (same as PQ) to play.

No clue how I am going to fit Dragon Age and Modern Warfare 2 let alone Beatles Rock Band in.  Having a real life and job sucks sometimes.  :'(

I've been playing it for a while and I'm siding with 'complete failure' for now. Mostly I've been driving around doing what appear to be side missions and unlocking safe houses. Every icon with a ! has a mission, but I don't know what icons count as a main story mission. Should I get back to the center of the map for that? It seems that the game just wants you to drive from quest icon to icon, since there's no quick way to reach a certain point on the map. It's all been aimless exploration so far. I'm going to give this a few more hours, but it hasn't clicked at all for me yet.

The dungeons are nasty but pretty cool since we don't get dungeons like this anymore these days.  Enemies are the pussified megaten enemies we've had since DDS1.  I remember back in SMT3 when you still got INSTANT DEATH SPELLd; ah, I miss that a bit.

Finally starting Brutal Legend. Haven't got to the RTS stuff yet, but I'm afraid.

lemme guess, all the colored spots are pitfalls that warp you to some random ass part of the dungeon :lol

Sorta, yeah.

The dungeons are nasty but pretty cool since we don't get dungeons like this anymore these days.  Enemies are the pussified megaten enemies we've had since DDS1.  I remember back in SMT3 when you still got INSTANT DEATH SPELLd; ah, I miss that a bit.

they still use hama and mudo in DDS and persona, just a lot less frequently...which I think makes it more infuriating.  I was more prepared for it in Nocturne.
