$49.99 , only 360 version it seems like.

Best announcement at E3 so far

Yeah, the only reason they brought it out on 360 in Japan was because Sony wouldn't let the PS3 version come to the US and they wanted US sales.

I'm guessing it was rejected because it looked like a PS2 game.  :\

Zoro?

I hope this game sells decently so Sony would learn a lesson or two. I still can't process the irony.

Yeah, because heaven forbid you release games that people might want?

Stupid fucking SCEA.
野球

So this is a weird one.

UFO Interactive is releasing the 360 version of Way of the Samurai 3 in North America on October 15th, 2009.

Agetec is releasing the PS3 version of Way of the Samurai 3 in North America on October 15th, 2009.

Both versions will contain the extra content that was developed for the 360 version in Japan.

What was the extra content?

I think it was just new faces, new costumes and new accessories

Agetec didn't say anything about bringing out the PSP WoTS1 in English, huh?   :-\
ど助平

Not yet at least. The president of Agetec ended up posting on GameFAQS that they're releasing the PS3 version after it showed up on Gamefly's release list.

I'm probably going to buy the 360 and PS3 versions if they're both released.  I wonder what the differences are.

and WotS2 PSP was apparently announced as well (for Japan).  The first (better) game was a good PSP port, but I don't think it will come.  The best to hope for is a euro release and importing/buying on euro psn.  Shinobido got that treatment.

btw, the first Yuusha game is coming out as Holy Invasion of Privacy Badman next week; it's PSN online only.

I fucking love Agetec, who's brought to these shores some really interesting and nichey games over the last decade or so.  Thanks for Disaster Report, Raw Danger, Space Channel 5 part 2 (with the first game, for 15 bones brand new!), and now this.  I love those guys.

And I'm really starting to love me some UFO Interactive, who is steadily bringing out 2D shooters to America, which is tits.  Any company that takes a chance on the very wacky Ilvelo deserves some credit.

gamestop now lists both a PS3 and 360 version coming to NA on October 13th for $50 instead of $60

I think they can take the little stamp off the 360 version now.

Nope. They can leave it on, it just seems a little odd.

I dont see anything odd about it. There's only one good version, and it's only on Xbox 360. No false advertising.

I started the first game again last night. It'd been years since I first played it, and I didn't really get into it back then. It's a lot more fun when you play it as a narrative you can screw with, rather than just a beat 'em up.  :shh  The whole thing feels like a lot of polish and care went into it. I think I might get into the fighting system a lot more this time.  I hope 3 is better than what I've heard of 2.

WotS2 wasn't a bad game.  There were only two big problems with it: 1) the setting and individual stories took way longer than the first game; 2) combat was broken easy with counters.  WotS1 is a lot more balanced with structure and combat, but WotS2 is still great, even if it's not as good.

Acquire is one of my favorite devs, and yeah, their publisher history is all over the place.

and if you count Samurai Western as part of the wots series, which I would do if only because the last boss had a badass western remix of the wots intro tune, then it would be 4 different publishers.

3 games in the series, 4 NA publishers.  I think series started by Acquire are cursed or something.

Ah well, I hope the PSP version of WotS gets an English release.  I never get tired of that game.

What's the big attraction of WotS? I've never picked one up.

what he said

It's maybe the best game at portraying the consequences of your actions.  One of the ways it does this is by having the game be very short and built for replaying, which is another part of the appeal.   You can kill the blacksmith in the game and he will be totally gone from the rest of the story; you can't even upgrade your weapons.  Then when you replay it, you can follow a story path where he becomes your biggest ally and fights along side you.  This is true for most characters in the game.  There is even an ending for just leaving the set and not getting involved with any of their shit.

It's kind of a unique game.  I think the major attraction of the games is the degree to which you can choose where the game goes.  There are tons of endings and story points and things that you can only see if you make certain decisions as you play.  It's a huge amount of narrative freedom.  For example, in the first game, the very first thing you come across is a girl being kidnapped or taken away by bandits.  You can choose to not interfere by just walking by, or you can fight the guys to save the girl, or you can fight the guys and kill the girl, or you can join the guys, or you can just turn around and leave town.  For every choice you could make there, the story will progress differently.

For me personally, I love the first game cuz it's like playing a video game version of the movie Yojimbo.

Fair warning though, the combat controls are a bit wonky.

Sounds neat, thanks. It doesn't sound as though the combat controls keep you from enjoying it at all.

Anybody have any luck finding this yet?  Gamestop pushed the date back to 10/20, but this is wrong and some mom n' pop stores have it.  Amazon says they have it in stock now for $46.99, too.  I pre-ordered it from them, but it says I won't get the game until 10/19, which makes no sense since I went with Prime one-day shipping.

PS3 version for me, since I don't have a choice in the matter...the 360 version is apparently not region-free.

i love the shit out of this game.  it's definitely one of my favorite series ever since the first one came out in america.  then i just kept getting the japanese versions.

much like godfather III was never part of the series - some even consider it to never have been made existing in a perpetual state of denial - samurai western is NOT part of the WoTS series.

1 spoiler for joo?
spoiler (click to show/hide)
you can do "ni to ryu" in this game after playing for a short while and earning the skill.  ni = 2.  to = sword.  ryu = style.  you can use any two swords you find.  earning new moves for it are expensive and can only be bought at one specific spot but it's worth it because they look cool and are fairly strong.
[close]

spoiler 2 for joo too?
spoiler (click to show/hide)
there are two blacksmiths.  they use hammers like before.  you can kill them and take the hammers, though they put up a really good fight in this game.  the hammers are actually a couple of really good weapons.  on top of that you can use them with "ni to ryu" and you have some fairly solid stat boosts.

This is the first PS3 game I've played on my Asus 1080P monitor that has some major issues when set to 1080P.  Dropping the PS3 resolution down to 720P fixes the problem; in 1080P, you get a screen tearing-like effect and "scan line" type effects everywhere.   :-\  I get the same issue when playing certain PS2 games on the PS3 too.

The game looks better on my little 19" Toshiba HDTV.

It's a great introduction to the series, they're completely stand alone titles. Only $35 at Fry's this weekend!

That said, an in-game map would be very welcome. I hate having to pause the game and look at the map to figure out where things are.

There's an option (that is off by default for whatever reason) to hit L3 and bring up the map screen.

That's great, but I still wish a map was on-screen while you're actually playing the game like the Ryu ga Gotoku series.

I played for maybe 2 hours and made no progress  :lol

So far it's awesome.  The combat seems more difficult than it was in the past two games.  I'm getting destroyed by everyone.  I went to the dojo, but everything the guy on the second floor said was nonsense.  It would have been nice if he would teach you instead of talking, then sparring.  And yeah, a mini-map or even just a compass would help a lot.

I've already:
-beat up a kid for insulting samurai
-caught a woman stealing things from dead bodies, confronted her, cut off her skirt and knocked her out
-got into a random fight with a ninja who went around killing samurai (ended with me dying)
-saw old guys getting robbed; I fought the attackers.  They stopped and tried to explain they weren't the bad guys; I didn't care and killed them anyway
-knocked out some old thug after he attacked me because I reminded him of his mother
-found an old lady who thought I was her son, so I pretended to be.  She healed me and then we made rice for profit

this is a good intro to the series because the graphics are newer and the fighting is a little cleaner, along with a ton of shit to do.  if you like it then you can just go back and get 1 or 2 for relatively cheap.

no one's tried out ni to ryu yet?

this game is so good

It's embarrassing that all these western rpgs pretend to be about choices and none can even hope to match how many branches this game had.  I became the ruler of the Bandits by killing their leader and elite soldiers.  In another run, I was fighting these people as if they were the end game.

The Japanese version is almost a year old, yeah.  There's an updated version coming out next week (Samurai Dou 3 Plus), which will have additional content and should be the same as the U.S. version.

All the stuff the JPN 360 version got. Not sure what it is, though.

edit: Wiki mentions three new companions and some other stuff not specified. I think new weapons.

Quote
    * The ability to make three heroines (Osei, Gihime, and Itsuse) and your "Sensei" into your companion
    * Unlockable costumes for companions
    * Additional main character models
    * Added super hard difficulty setting
    * Trophy support
    * Additional equipment parts

anyone know how to get a companion who uses a sword? I want to learn how to catch a sword when using melee, but both people who seem to teach swordplay theater say you need someone who can.  The only companion I've found is that old lady who thinks your her son.
