Am I the only one who's not really jazzed on Uncharted 2?
« on: June 06, 2009, 03:05:44 AM »
I don't know, I just don't understand what it's doing different than any other third person shooters out there.  In fact, I think it's pretty disappointing that it doesn't really delve into exploration and focuses so much on shooting.

I just don't really understand how this is lapping up so much praise.  I think The PS3 had much better looking games at E3.

It looks like an awesome action adventure movie turned into a game. It's Uncharted, but seemingly much, much better in every way. It also helps that it's not coming from some rookie studio, and that even the multiplayer (specifically, the co-op) is damned good. Honestly now, if you seriously don't understand why a well playing action game with crazy production values is getting praise, then you must have missed the boat on gaming a while ago.

I don't know, I guess my issue is that I'm just sick of third person shooters in general I guess.  I'm much more interested in a game that uses the perspective and does something a little different with it--Assassins Creed 2, Splinter Cell, etc.  I just can't really play Gears, Uncharted, etc without just feeling like I've played this game before.

No, I still don't understand it.

Then you must be a bit daft. No offense.

Besides, how many platforming/shooter hybrids are there really out there? I haven't played the SP, but this blend certainly has an effect on the multiplayer bit.

Yes, you're the only one not into Uncharted 2. I have right here in my hands a survey of all the world's inhabitants, and it came back 6,999,999,999 for, 1 against. I wondered who that 1 was, thinking it might be some error, perhaps the respondant didn't quite understand the question. Now I know, and the worst of my fears has been realized: there is one who refuses to conform. Don't worry, you will be broken in time.

I'd love to live in a world with multiplayer experiences so magnificent as to make this mediocre, but hey. I'm not sold on the straight up competitive modes, but it was certainly well above average.

Not really excited about it either, and I loved the first game (I didn't put it down until I beat it). It just looks like a big map pack. It seems like they removed the minimal exploration from the original and replaced it with more shootin (the worst part of the first) and stealth elements (blah).

Mass Effect 2 is looking to be a more interesting sequel as from what they showed they seem to be improving on the faults in the original, where ND just seems to be adding more shock and awe graphic effects.

Ah yes, this is a good point.  The first Mass Effect was something I enjoyed while playing but there were certain things during that really didn't mesh with me, and led to me trading it in right after I finished it.  Mass Effect 2 seems to fix most of those issues, hopefully, and I'm very impressed with the changes.

Snore. Whatever though, I'd sooner be a corporate lapdog than someone so critically daft that he can't quite understand why people are excited about an explosive action adventure game with great production values and a veteran studio at the helm.

The uncharted demo was also 99% shooting and everyone was like "wtf is this shooting game!? Where is my exploration!?!"
Then the full game had a decent amount of platforming mixed with all the shooting.

I'm sure the Crash Bandicoot x Jak & Daxter guy's aren't going to completely remove platforming from their games.

I haven't watched any E3 media because I'm on media blackout for Uncharted 2 because all I need to know is that it's Uncharted 2 and Uncharted 1 was great so I'm sure this will be too.

Jesus christ, settle down.  And I'm sorry, it still looks like you're shooting shit most of the time.  It doesn't matter what the premise is; if you're still shooting most of the time, it's still a shooting game.

I am bit curious to find out what it is that puts Splinter Cell so far above then, if the gripe is unoriginal utilization of the perspective. Hell, Sam even moves like an action movie star these days, and apparently shoots and absorbs bullets like one too, so what are the critical differences here? Automated kill feature?

It doesn't matter what the premise is; if you're still shooting most of the time, it's still a shooting game.

And in Splinter Cell, which you apparently adore (and which I adore too), you do what, poke a stick at stuff?

There was too much shooting in the first game, way more than exploration/platforming. It got annoying to have a gun fight every five steps. Most people complained about it too.

this thread got really bad fast, so I'll just try and answer the op.

Quote
I don't know, I just don't understand what it's doing different than any other third person shooters out there.

If different was barometer for quality, well, it isn't.  It just looks like it will be a really good third person shooter from what they've shown.

Quote
In fact, I think it's pretty disappointing that it doesn't really delve into exploration and focuses so much on shooting.

I'm not ready to believe that they won't have platforming, exploration and puzzles throughout.  What was shown is what shows well, which would be the combat.  Just from the beta I can tell that there is more mixing of platforming and shooting at least, so that is certainly welcomed.

Quote
I just don't really understand how this is lapping up so much praise.  I think The PS3 had much better looking games at E3.

People really like third person shooters.  There is that one picture for Gears 2 with the guy saying "The only bad thing about Gears 2 is that it's too good."

Personally, I'm looking forward to Uncharted 2.  The first game is great and just from my experience in the multiplayer beta I know the combat is much better than it was before.  It's not the game I'm most excited about later this year, but I will play it, I'll probably enjoy it a lot, I'll play co-op and ignore the versus stuff.

It does help that it looks incredibly good.

I do too, but my hype for the game has died down a bit.  I hope the single player mode gets more in-depth with the destruction and has a lot more buildings and structures to destroy.  I finished the first area and found it to be pretty mediocre, but am hoping that was meant to serve as more of a "training area" of sorts.  Multiplayer has had its moments, but it's just not sucking me in like the demo did.  I think I just need to play more.

and I don't know what Sony had on the PS3 that looked better, tbh.  God of War 3 was shown a lot, but that didn't impress me much, and I really liked the other God of War games.  MAG, yeah, no.  Heavy Rain, not so much.  Ratchet and Clank 9?

The thing Sony showed that I was most impressed with was Gran Tursimo PSP, but that isn't a PS3 game.  It looks insane for the PSP.

and the two games I'm surprised there isn't as much hype for are Halo ODST and Spirit Tracks.  Both are this year, right? no one seems to even care, but I do! Link has an Indy style whip.  Forget bad memories of Phantom Hourglass.  He can swing across gaps with it, then use it against enemies.  Best Zelda weapon ever.

Looking at the gameplay demonstrations of both, Splinter Cell looks to be nearly as much of a shooter as Uncharted is. Hell, they even have the same shimmy/grab/throw move. But I'm sure Splinter Cell will have pure stealth sections too... much like Uncharted will almost certainly have sequences that don't have you platforming past a pissed off Hind, and into a collapsing building.

MAG is so generic looking they have to rely on a multiplayer gimmick to sell it. Resistance 2's 60 player multi flopped hard, so MAG is doomed.

It's the sequel to game that did almost nothing wrong, and a game I never became bored with.  Not to mention they are doing new things with Yoshi and how he functions in the world.  God of War 3, while it looks great and I'm pumped to play, really doesn't look any different than God of War II, just prettier.  Eh.

No you are not the only one,all that jazz is a combination of few things:

PS3 exclusive
It will lead Sony fall "blockbuster" lineup-just like Resistance 2 did last year, demoed in the same manner at last year E3

Sony needs "big exclusive"
Its a game with big production values, how fun will it be?Don't know
If it was multi,i would be oh nice rent

All that jazz is just internet hype,it means nothing in the real world

I think that Sony wants it to be some kind of answer to Gears of War...good luck with that

It was a great, action-packed demo but it saddens me a bit that they are getting even further away from the exploration bits (they've even said that themselves this E3).  At least the action bits look much better and the enemies don't just come in pre-determined waves in canned arenas like 90% of the battles in the first game.  Plus it doesn't hurt that this is one of the top three best-looking console games out there.

I would have been 100x more interested if it had a lot of puzzle/platforming elements. Kinda like TR Underworld with better control and camera. But I am soooooo sick of 3rd person/first person shooters so this leaves me cold.

It's even more Gears of Sahara according to Garnett Lee.

Dead Space Extraction looks great

It's even more Gears of Sahara according to Garnett Lee.

According to Naughty Dog, thinking it's more Gears of Sahara or whatever was a knee jerk reaction to the press conference demo.  Apparently Modern Warfare 2 is now 1/3rd an ice climbing game.
