I usually like Burton's stuff but wow dude...nearly every fucking picture I saw today was like a horrible photoshop.

Alice in Wonderland is trippy enough as itself. Adding a little dark/goth/whateverthefucktheycallit/etc makes sense sure. But this is beyond over board. This is like visionary...water board

I don't see the problem.  Alice in Wonderland was always a very, very fucked up book if you actually read it after childhood.  Maybe this one is aimed mostly at an older audience?

No, it was written by a pedophile and it had content that I would never feel comfortable explaining to a child.

Let Tim Burton go wild with it.  I don't mind Depp but I got really bored with the other Burton/Depp movies and this one looks like it might actually keep my interest..

Such as?  A lot of the stuff is interpretative, and Carroll himself wrote that much of it was nonsense.

He took pictures of a 7 year old girl, naked, without her parents in the room (as was the norm back then).  There is no CSI DNA evidence left in her rectum but it's pretty obvious what was going on.

Things like the mercury poisoning and the historical references are way too much for a kid to think about.  Obviously, these shots are not the same style you'd see in a Nickolodean show so maybe it's not even aimed at kids?

Actually, from all accounts, including that girl - Carroll died celibate.  He was definitely an eccentric guy, but nude pictures of a girl in Victorian era England isn't the big deal it is nowadays.  He was an eccentric child author and loved kids.  None of the girls that he kept in contact with spoke an ill word about him.

I look forward to this. I didn't think the Tim Burton Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was bad at all; really good in fact, just not as good as Willy Wonka 70's version. Then again, I'm a fan of the book.

I just didn't think it was as bad as others said it was.

Uh.  Just because it was ok to photograph naked little girls in Victorian england doesn't mean that you aren't a pedophile for doing it.  It doesn't mean you ARE, but the fact that Carroll was inappropriately attracted to young girls is generally accepted knowledge - yeah, that's not DNA evidence or anything, but come on.

Burton seems like he's been dancing around and making pseudo Alice in Wonderland movies since his career started. Rather than this being the pinnacle of his career it's kinda just bringing yawns from me. It seems like his final trip/death march back to the well.

Johnny Depp is awesome but Burton gives him too long a leash to play Depp Eccentric Character In A Burton Movie No. 24523235

Consensus amongst those who have actually studied him is pretty straightforward - that he was not sexually attracted to young girls, but that he was socially awkward and had trouble forming adult relationships. Testimonies from children he photographed to their parents to his peers have pretty much exonerated him, but people have still created elaborate conspiracy theories.

This myth that he's a pedophile is ridiculous.  Was Mark Twain a pedophile as well?

It's pretty much accepted that he died celibate.

... As for this so-called 17-year-old, I was told in Grand Bahamas that she was 22!  So it's all good.

He existed in an era before Freud.  Only now might you allege that he harbored inappropriate thoughts about children, but during the Victorian era, he was just an eccentric artist - and not even one of a kind!

The guy was just weird, but our post-Freud society has deemed it fit to demonize the guy.  A lot of it has to do by the kind of subculture that has reveled in his works - does anyone throw labels like "pedophile" around Mark Twain, who is largely guilty of the same behaviors as Carroll?

Nope.

Because Alice in Wonderland is hippy trash and the author is a pervert.  So sayeth the puritanical American hive mind.

but during the Victorian era, he was just an eccentric artist - and not even one of a kind!

From one of his biographies:
Quote
We cannot know to what extent sexual urges lay behind Charles's preference for drawing and photographing children in the nude. He contended the preference was entirely aesthetic. But given his emotional attachment to children as well as his aesthetic appreciation of their forms, his assertion that his interest was strictly artistic is naive. He probably felt more than he dared acknowledge, even to himself.[

It's commonly accepted that he was a repressed pedophile.  When I say that it was a "fucked up" book, I don't mean that it was bad.  But that maybe it's meant for a more mature audience.  We all grew up thinking of it as just another Disney movie your parents pop in to shut you up.  It obviously has a bit more to it than that so lets wait and see the final product which might actually be good.  Obviously, Burton is going for a "disturbing" visual style like just about every movie he's ever directed but that style obviously would be perfect for Alice in Wonderland.

I'm pretty damned sensitive to pedophilia, but the reasoning in that "biographical" bit is less than brilliant. It's absolutely possible to enjoy something from artistic and emotional perspectives without it ever having anything to do with a sexual interest. Arguing that this is an alien concept says plenty more about cultural standards and perception than it does about the dude in question.

Basically, you people are a bunch of damaged sickos.

I remember reading that one author from back then actually couldn't lose his virginity on his wedding night because he was disgusted by his wife's pubes.  They annulled their marriage 7 years later.

Obviously, there is a whole spectrum to the "taking pictures of naked girls" hobby but if you can't be attracted to an adult woman, then there is a huge problem.
