Hmmmmm, I'd rather see him try to do a movie that shows he can go back to his roots.  Something kinetic and short.  Doing a movie based on a classic property just reeks of Peter Jackson's Kong.  Let's hope this won't be his OMG look at my ego movie.

I think this has more to do with the fact that Columbia just acquired the rights and asked him to, at the very least, produce.  I haven't heard anything about a lifelong love affair with The Shadow.  Now, if he ever remade The Three Stooges into a full blown feature - then we'd have Raimi's King Kong.

Good point.  Any idea why they're so gun ho on the property getting remade into another movie a scant 10ish years after the last time?  Is it the superhero craze, and the fact that Columbia could basically reinvent the Shadow into whatever they want since the property hasn't been a hit since like the 40s?

Actually, I don't see Raimi directing this.  He's pretty much on top of Hollywood now, and I'm sure he'd rather do something he wants to do than someone else's property.

There's a quiet, massive acquisition of a lot of the old serial and pulp properties from most of the major players.  I think they're hoping to capitalize on the tailend of the superhero genre boom, by introducing characters that most young people will think are new and as so, put butts in seats.

Of course, it could be a catastrophe, like the last time they tried to do this, and everyone churned out stuff like The Phantom, The Shadow and the awesome, but financial bust adaptation of The Rocketeer.

And personally, I think Raimi will go underground after Spider-Man 3 (which I think is going to be a critical dud and frontloaded moneymaker ala X-Men 3) for a bit.  I think he'll trying to restructure Ghost House Pictures, since I've heard reports of unhappiness from that camp in terms of output and stuff in the pipeline.  And then I'll think he'll try something small, like The Gift.

Then after that - who knows.  He's written his own ticket in the system and paid his dues, so I'd like to see him do something bold.  I think we may be gearing for a Cameron-esque hiatus, though.

I hope not. Of course I will reserve judgment, but Im doubting whether or not Cameron even has the stuff anymore. That both of his announced trilogies dont interest me in the least is also off-putting.

I'd like to see him change his mind and helm that Evil Dead remake.  I know he's said he's only producing, but was an actual director ever announced?

No.  The buzz was that they were going to go after a high-profile Asian filmmaker to tap into that horror scene that's growing in the East.  Rumors (wild rumors, mind you) even circulated of Miike, but I don't think he'd ever agree to anything like that.  At the same time, Ghost House is cementing itself as an American production company that is respectful and accomodating to Asian filmmakers.

I don't know if the Evil Dead remake will ever happen.  Part of me thinks it was just an elaborate negotiating ploy when Raimi wanted a bigger cut from the New Line Freddy/Jason/Ash production.

Personally, I think the best option he has at the table is to helm Steve Niles' long-in-production 30 Days of Night.  It could be a good return to form, and the source material is so Raimi.  It's what caught his eye when he acquired the rights.

I was obsessed with Raimi's Dark Man when I was a kid. I even had the poster. The odd thing is I WAS TOO SCARED TO SEE IT. I was obsessed with a film I was unwilling to see. To this day I never saw it. It could never match my nostalgic obsession with it.

In case you're perplexed, Raimi can be labelled an executive producer and producer and never set foot on set.  Most executive producers don't even know where the set is.  It basically meant he was the money man, which is why he is labelled as even a regular 'ole producer on some of those films -- because they're made by his production house.

The only one of those films you listed where he was involved and went on set was The Grudge, as it was the flagship movie for his new baby.

You think he has enough time to direct arguably the biggest blockbuster of the year and be on set for all of those films?

Yeah, I had a lot of fun with it.  Disposable White Guy and I went with friends, one of which brought his girlfriend.  She was so freaked out, he had to take her home.  On the way out, I called his cell and told him to give it to his girl, and I made that weird toad noise that dead chick makes and we could hear her scream across the parking lot.

Also, I'll never forget that reveal when Ted Raimi is wondering that care business in the dark, and that chick turns around with her jaw completely removed.

Some black guy yelled, DAMN THAT BITCH GOT A HUGE TONGUE.

I like movie going experiences like that.
