NFL comes to the iPhone, and it's not from EA...
« on: August 07, 2009, 04:23:28 PM »
EA has been hyping up their promised Madden iPhone for MONTHS and hasn't even shown a single screenshot yet. The iPhone is their new baby, and they just got shown how to do it because Gameloft released their NFL 2010 just a couple days after announcing it.

It actually looks and runs better than PSP Madden, but controls aren't perfect.

So, I guess the exclusive license doesn't extend to portable games?

Guess not.

And EA needs to learn that iPhone games move fast. They can't hype something, not show ANYTHING about it, and expect people to wait. Gameloft has been at this for a along time and they just owned EA. People aren't waiting for Madden now.

Just to mobile games apparently. Gameloft had an agreement years before EA secured that exclusivity deal BS, but never actually released an NFL title till now.

I wonder if Gameloft has the ability to port this to the DSi.  Their other phone to DSi ports have been pretty good, would be nice to get a good football game, I hear Real Soccer is good but the sport doesn't interest me.

No, because EA's NFL exclusivity would apply to the DS and Gameloft would have to strip the license from it.

Success of iPhone/iPod Touch games is the big reason why Apple is pursuing a home gaming device; most likely their tablet Mac.

In case you are living under a rock Nintendo itself referred to iPhone as straight competitor to DS in last press release.

Monkey Island and Simon the Sorcerer are on iPhone and not DS. DS loses.

I'm sure EA is shaking in their boots. Madden runs the market. Madden IS the market

All those SCUMM games can be played on any portable platform if you know what you're doing.  :P

This thread is dumb because it assumes anyone who enjoys games would care about a crappy looking football game on the iphone.  But there are a lot of fun iphone games out there; just ignore the ones that are console/PSP style games, since so far, only Real Racing has been good.  Most of the good games are puzzle or arcade style games.  Actually, Civ Rev just came out for it.

DS has had CivRev for much longer. Where's ManaByte now? :smug

Map looks better than the DS one.  Some units are the same as the DS. Others like the settlers are better.

EA finally showed Madden iPhone, and swears it'll be out by opening day:

There's a rumor going around that EA has set the iPhone game to self destruct prior to Madden 11 coming out. Like you buy it, and it deletes itself from your phone next year to force you to buy the new version.

I think we all know why it was delayed, so EA can squeeze Attention Whore and Dog Killer in there...

There's no need, NFL 2010 is adding Vick and Favre sometime in the next week. The 3.0 update allowed DLC/updates for apps.

Yeah, I'm still not getting it: EA has a time-limited exclusive on the license for games, it likely doesn't specify platforms in case PS4 and Xbox 1080 come out during the exclusivity.

Gameloft having the license prior to the exclusivity would make sense; being in place, their contract would be exempt from EA's deal. But why would anyone sit on the license without moving on it for this long? How long has EA's exclusivity been in place now? 3, 4 years?

I think the simple answer is that it didn't cover mobile devices.
