Oh no doubt, they've made a ton of bad decisions, but I still think they have a chance.  They haven't at least committed to something as unproven as the waggle, so they get points for that at least.  I'm not happy with their launch, the launch titles, or the price, but I think their network is off to a good start, and I think they hold enough cards with third parties that even if things do go completely south, there will at least be a decent number of good third party games on the system.

I'm happy with my 360, and I'd like to see that become the home for non-distinguished mentally-challenged gamers, but I'm not writing Sony off just yet.

Also:  I think it is likely that SE will do at least 2 DQ games on the DS.  Development time will be much quicker.  Maybe by the time a third game is ready (~3ish years?), the Wii (or hopefully something else) will have enough home units sold that they'll switch platforms again.

Why?  Making it on the Wii would mean that it gets to be a sub 10 million dollar game, rather than a game that would cost tens of millions of dollars on the PS3.  It's not difficult to see that developing on the much cheaper console is a better financial decision.  What with DQ's kingmaker rep, they'll sell 4 million units regardless of what platform the game is released on.  They would simply make more money on the Wii since development is far cheaper.

There's really little reason for them to go back to Sony.

Remember when 3rd parties fled Nintendo due to royalty and financial reasons during the PS1/N64 era?  Same thing is happening here, except devs are leaving Sony because it is too expensive to develop on.

It would've taken longer (at this point) to make the game on the Wii.  There's no way the Wii could have a large enough install base by Q2 07.  The DS game (or games) will be quick and easy money.

It's not on the Wii for the same reason it's not on the PS3: they are going for the platform with the highest userbase. Wada admitted as much earlier today.

Sony was on life support in Japan before this announcement; now they're officially dead lol. It's over for them. No Dragon Quest means even more people will have less of a reason to spend $400 on the system. Even as we speak it's not selling out, and the software sales are very weak. Outside of FFXIII I can't think of one game that will revive the PS3 next year.

Yeah, I'm not wild about the Wii at the moment, but if developers do come to grips with designing games for it, it will be a good system.  If Wii ends up on top this gen, I'll deal.  I just hope that MS or Sony manages to stick around to give me the eye candy I desperately need.

TVC: thank you. There's no denying Sony is in a terrible position right now, and they've been on the defensive since E3 (before really).

In the US the loss of DQ means little, but overall it's huge. If the PS3 does poorly in Japan, Sony as a company is in trouble. I think MS is ready to kick ass. The PS3 is going to go through the same sales drought the 360 suffered last year during the spring months. Except at $500-600, I expect this drought to be much bigger. I wouldn't be suprised if the PS3 is selling around 90,000 units a month in March and April, for instance.

Expect the Xbox 360 to win the holiday showdown. Halo, GTA, Madden. All on the shelf, for the same system. Game over.

I'm not even following you now. I don't know if you're backpedaling or just being plain stupid, but we've been down this path before and I've explained my position on the PS3's price -- it's expensive as hell, but there is some justification for the higher price - new hardware. Same goes for 360 but to a slightly lesser extent. What do you get with Wii? Waggle and a beefed up GameCube CPU and GPU for $250. Whoop-de-fucking-doo.

Also, you make such a claim forgetting that I just said it would be wise for Sony and MS to develop consoles that are intended to be MUCH CHEAPER in retail price next time. But keep on living in your little world, PD. Not many people are listening to you.

If I want GameCube graphics and a strong library of games, I'll just find a used GameCube somewhere for $50. The waggle does not amuse me.
