Guess what, I watched it the first time in 1080p. And a second time.

It looks like CG. Some of the scenery is well done, but the aliens look goofy.

The ending can be seen from a mile away... in the teaser.

Oh, Cameron.

This looks awful.  If you had told me it was from a crappy Dreamworks animation studio I would have believed you.  If you told me it was from James Cameron and he's been working on it for a decade, I would have said "Haha good joke."

Also, the main character's Avatar looks like Frankenstein with Down's Syndrome.

Yeah, it looks like recycled Terminator and Matrix concept art.

Also, could that story be more telegraphed from just a teaser? This looks like Dances with Wolves in space.

yep.  There's really nothing about this movie that seems appealing aside from Cameron's name being attached.

It's an epic scifi movie. That alone is enough to get my attention.

Or the humans destroy the aliens, and the audience learns a valuable lesson about human savagery and that we must stop our war mongering ways before it's too late.

Why is it a desirable property for a CG film not to look like CG, anyway?  Do we rate other things based on how much they don't appear to be what they in fact are?

Special effects have often been judged by how convincing they are.

And to be fair, this film was hyped as the Second Coming of CG.  It was supposed to be a revolutionary marvel that could not have ever been done before.....so for it to look like the sort of CG jerkfest that Georgue Lucas has been doing for a decade is something of a letdown.

It doesn't even look as good as stuff ILM was doing three years ago. Someone I know pointed out that Davy Jones in the Pirates movies looks more convincing than the Navi.

Um. It's 100% CG. Hat, face, tentacles, everything. The mere fact you thought any of Davy Jones wasn't CG showed how fucking untouchable ILM is when it comes to this stuff and how poorly most other effects houses compare.

Trying to determine FX studio talent by way of comparing a still from one movie to a still from a completely different movie with a completely different artistic aim and presentation is the dumbest thing anyone has done today. I'm not sure if I like the look of Avatar, but it sure as hell isn't a poor showing from Digital Domain.

:o

Simply amazing stuff then.

Just from a visual standpoint, Pirates 2 and 3 blow away the original. As great as ILMs skeletons were (they even made Weta rethink the army of the dead in Return of the King after seeing the POTC trailer); Davy Jones, his crew, and the Dutchman all make the two sequels worth watching as every time you notice some detail ILM slipped in that you didn't see before. The BluRays are perfect for that.
