On topic, I kind of wish that Michael Moore wouldn't do cutesy shit like try to arrest the board of Goldman Sachs.  To be sure, SOMEBODY out there needs to be giving these people shit, but sadly Moore has little to no credibility in the eyes of most people.  Something about having the balls to speak what was essentially the truth at the Oscars however many years ago I guess.

I've never been a Moore fanboy, but I'm continualy amazed at the not just the level of bile thrown at him, but also the certaintude of it.

Like Triumph just mentioned, he got booed and branded kerrraazzy for pointing out that the Iraq war was built on lies. Fast forward a few years later and apart from a few deadenders, who actually would argue with what he said? Whatever, apparently a taint was placed upon him despite history proving him right.

As a wingnut, I object - I accept those facts just fine; I just recognize that it's evil.   ;)

...choosing your own doctor and not having to wait for life saving treatment is evil... or it's just evil if THE GUBMINT pays for it???

So, THE PEEPLE giving their money to an institution (insurance company) that has no interest other than profit and has been demonstrated to deny care when it becomes too costly = a ok

-but-

THE PEEPLE giving their money to a non-profit, GUBMINT RUN institution (public option, single payer system, what have you) that won't deny their care in the interest of a few margin points = TEH GREAT SATAN

I just want to make sure we're clear on all this.

One's voluntary.  The other's compulsory.  The compulsory one also involves people that pay in nothing using a lot.

So yeah, your framing aside, pretty much.

THE TYRANNY OF MEDICARE MUST BE STOPPED

Yeah, f the poor.  They really ought to have better sense when selecting who they're born to.

Jdub- I was commenting on the fact that I had derailed and was attempting to put it back on the rails.  But now I am once more derailing, because, you know.  I'm WILY that way.

You're out of touch with most Americans, who do not support Obama or his government takeover policies. Most people love their health care, they think medicare is working; no one wants that hijacked by the government. Government can't run anything right, how will they run our health, especially our elderly and sick.

Honestly I doubt I want to shrink the military budget anywhere near as much as you do.  I would certainly cut the hell out of it and close a bunch of bases, but a robust military isn't in itself a bad thing; the notion that "I've got this shiny toy here, I simply HAVE TO use it" is where we get in trouble.

People voluntarily choose to not buy health care, or voluntarily choose to be completely unable to afford health care? A public option is compulsory?

The thing is that Moore only gets to put out 1.5-2 hours of film every couple of years, and to condense things down corrners might need to be cut. To someone who follows either internet threads as a news aggregate or your preferred circle of blogs, a lot of what he does might seem old hat or even sloppy, but it's still putting out info to many who don't receive it through other means.

But then again you know this, I'm guessing you're just practicing for your future career as the black Ann Coulter.

I enjoy his movies too, but I do think Moore has started to let himself, or at least his percieved persona, start to get in the way of some of his work. I'd prefer it if he was a bit more in the background in his future films.

Actually this makes sense.  Economic downturns are all about a lack of consumer confidence.  Its mostly psychological.  So if you're in a country with more safety nets, you're more likely to buy stuff you don't need.  Libertarians lose again.

So, wait, right wing fucktard ass-hats like O'Reilly, Tucker Carlson, Newt Gingrich, et al are never, ever called to accountability for broadcasting AS NEWS their intentionally contentious, logically fallacious claptrap. Michael Moore, on the other hand makes movies which people have to PAY TO SEE, ostensibly NOT NEWS, just some form of entertainment, if anything an extended opinion piece with the presentation of his statistics tailored to match his desired goal in presentation, and he's the one who is irresponsibly misleading the world?

You said "never ever."  I've seen plenty of newspapers, magazines, and Internet sites call out Fox News repeatedly--and deservedly so.

I don't know whether they've offered retractions (I've only watched about 20 minutes of Fox News in my entire life). I assume they don't, but that has nothing to do with whether they're called on to be accountable.

Moore partially redeemed himself with Sicko.

As long as it isn't intellectually dishonest like Bowling for Columbine or use six degrees of separation logic like in Fahrenheit 9/11, I'll watch it.

I went to buy some insurance the other day and it was hilarious how quickly the saleswoman brought up 'Sicko'. We weren't even talking about health insurance, and she just started spinning how their product wasn't a total fake like all the US insurance companies' products. Like him or not, I think he's having an effect. I thought the movie was highly entertaining, and somewhat informative (it certainly prompted me to do a lot of reading at the least).

Fair enough; I am caught up by my hyperbole, "never, ever" is an overstatement. And to further limit the validity of my observation, everything I see is filtered just by virtue of getting my news in Japan. Instead of watching US news shows and reading US papers, the times I actually see US news reported are when something has been shown to be irresponsibly reported.

Good grief, I just realized why so many Japanese people think the US is crazy, lazy, misguided, dishonest or whatever... it's this filter of distance. Wow. I've been here too long.
