Yeah, I don't get why Jimmy Brooks is popular either. I guess it's because of Degrassi? I think he's terrible and I have to hear him almost every day. At this point, I feel that I could sing 'best I ever had' backwards.

The album is meh. There's a couple of decent tracks, but it's mostly boring. So Far Gone shits on this.

Feel asleep halfway so I haven't listened to it all. But so far meh. I won't make any judgments yet

Kanye and Lupe broke out the gate with amazing debuts. I thought Wale's debut was shit, and so far many people are saying TML is disappointing. And of course BoB's album was shit. Seems like this new generation is failing

Album overview: "I'm rich bitch. Bitch I love you"

There's a lot of variety in the production, even though many tracks feature low tempo chorus changes Drake can croon over. Yet flow wise he attacks every beat the exact same. After hearing Royce and Eminem totally rip Over apart, it's hard to listen to the original. Most songs feel more like him reading lyrics from his blackberry than actually putting any effort in to his raps. Jay-Z annihilates him on Lights Up, and if the album featured any other good rappers not phoning it in, he'd be annihilated multiple times.

Drake's popularity and hype is more of an indictment on mainstream hip hop than a statement on his talent. He's a good rapper with some wit, and given the current climate that makes him an amazing rapper to people. Same thing with Lil Wayne.

I like Fireworks, Light Up, Miss Me, Thank Me Now, and am warming up to Find Your Love lol. Overall this is a pretty average album at best. It's interesting that so far, the "new generation" of rappers have disappointed with their debuts. Wale's album bombed and wasn't nearly as good as his mixtapes, BoB's album might be the definition of a rapper completely selling out, and now Drake. Guess we'll have to wait for J Cole to set things right.

Rap Lyrics of the (17)90's.

BY CHLOE FILSON

- - - -

"To an extreme degree, I have amplified my voice and thus my sentiments—much as a vandal might."

- -

"Would that I were of greater stature, and could participate in the frivolities of the future."

- -

"The music I have created resounds loudly in my ears, causing me to offer a brief prayer of gratitude for the blessings given by my Lord and Saviour."

- -

"At one time, whilst reposing at my leisure—indeed—what, ho! I beheld that which did not accord with reason."

- -

"Before you are the mechanisms of amplification, and the amplification process is underway. Let us not squander our time; I urge you to appreciate the verses, herein amplified, which in their melody and metre naturally provoke jumping. Thus, jump, as you will."

- -

"I admit to a predilection for certain female attributes—to put it precisely, yet with due regard for delicacy, the buttocks. You other fathers shan't deny it."

- -

"Birthed and reared in West Philadelphia, the days of my childhood and early youth were spent in the wildernesses just beyond our village, where my companions and I passed many an hour roaming free and frolicking, oftentimes playing ball sports in the proximity of the schoolhouse. I recall a certain occasion on which two wastrels came upon us, interrupted our pursuits, caused a general ruckus, and incited a fray. Upon my honour, had I not been bested by these mongrels, no doubt my loving mother would not have laid her heavy hand and decided my future in such an immovable manner as she then did. Her words, as I recollect, were 'Get thee to Bel Air forthwith, where you will live with your aunt and uncle in peace, and whence you will return only when you have become a man, noble as any other.' Alas! What choice had I, but to summon a cab and depart from that dear childhood home? How strange it was to see that the approaching buggy appeared to be painted with nonsensical lettering and festooned with the symbols of gambling and sin. Yet I disregarded it and considered it a rarity. 'To Bel Air, if you please' said I to the cabbie as together we heaved up my trunk. At perhaps seven or eight of the clock, after some hours of evening travel, the buggy came to a halt at the entrance of a grand house. After bidding the driver farewell, I regarded my new lodgings. Here would I be educated. Here would I learn my place in the family. Here would I reign, in a sense, as the new prince of Bel Air."

- -

"Huzzah! There it is."

just saw BBU perform tonight.  goddamn.  They had more energy than some punk bands.  they worked their asses off for that show.  Songs they performed that were on the Clear Channel mix tape had samples from Nirvana's "Polly" and fucking Refused.  I should have known what was up when one of them came onstage wearing a Dead Kennedy's shirt.

What's up, Chicago?  You got any more acts like that hiding out?

In 1990 DJ Stretch Armstrong and Bobitto Garcia debuted their college radio show on Columbia University’s WKCR (89.9FM) in NYC and left an indelible mark on the culture. The show, which ran until 1998, helped launch the careers of many of hip-hop’s biggest stars—including The Notorious B.I.G., Jay-Z, Nas, Big Pun, the Wu-Tang Clan, DMX, Cam’ron, Mobb Deep, Big L and Fat Joe, among others.

Listeners used to tune in to hear rare cuts, b-sides and remixes to some of their favorite songs, as well as interviews and live freestyles. Tomorrow, (early Friday morning on October 22) from 1 a.m. to 5 a.m. Stretch and Bob will return to WKCR to broadcast a special anniversary show. (Fans outside of NYC can log on to WKCR’s website to hear a live stream).

We here at XXL are pretty excited by the news so to celebrate Stretch and Bobbito’s 20-year anniversary we’ve compiled 20 of the show’s more memorable freestyles. Yes, yes y’all! —Rob Markman

Hmmm, this Blu cat is alright. He has a great flow, but just like any other rapper has too much filler songs and songs that go off tangent every other line for the sake of sounding nice, bragging, randomly stating he likes pussy (probably gay) or rhyming. Nothing I've never heard before. Don't see why he's worthy of such praise, though.

My World Is... - Meh
The Narrow Path - Okay
So(ul) Amazing - Bad
Juicen' Dranks - Okay
In Remembrance of Me - Good, first verse is the best, the others are average aside from the thing about slavery but even still, what does slavery have to do with you? Another off tangent lyric.
Blu Collar Worker - Okay, nice premise but once again with rap there's a nice subject but the subject becomes hip hop-ized. Barely any of the song has anything to do with being a blue collar worker and even then, it's not about the taxing work, but how he has to support his women. Plus: "But i don't need shit, so don't come to me, and I don't eat dick, so don't cum to me" LOL SO WITTY. I know it's a rap album when I encounter something that juvenile.
Dancing in the Rain - Okay.
First Things First - Pretty good; reminds me of some Resurrection-era Common.
No Greater Love - Ugh
Show Me The Good Life - This song is fantastic.
Simply Amazin' - Simply Vapid.
Cold Hearted - Fantastic song, great beat, fantastic lyrics, excellent use of repetition.
The World Is (Below The Heavens) - Great song, powerful lyrics. This is what rap is all about, please.
You Are Now In The Clouds With - Solid

Haven't gotten through the bonus tracks yet.

Overall I thought it was a fairly average album with some great songs. Unfortunately for me, underground hip hop still continues to be overrated and only a little less vapid than mainstream rap.

*listens to some The Foreign Exchange instead*

No Greater Love is an interesting, "modern" take on I Used to Love H.E.R. One of my favs on the album.

I guess it would include folks like Kanye West, Kid Cudi, Charles Hamilton, Wale, Lupe Fiasco, etc. Maybe Wiz Khalifa and Currency although they're more stoner types. Is B.o.B a hipster? Dunno. It depends on how you define stuff I guess.

When I think of hip hop hipsters I think of the skinny jeans rappers name dropping designer clothes and challenging the masculine/street rap stereotypes of the genre.

To be honest I'm not a fan of most of the people named above, dunno if you'd like them either. A Tribe Called Quest challenged hip hip beef and masculinity and got called a lot of names back in the day. But they could rap circles around their peers, had great production, etc. Outside of Lupe, are there any truly great hip hop hipsters out there? Wale had that nice Seinfeld mixtape but since then he's been trash. Charles Hamilton is too much of a goofball for me to respect, but I saw a video where he left a mental institution in a wheelchair and did a badass 30min freestyle lol.

Maybe you'd dig Kid Cudi?

I dled BoB's album. Production is tight. Rapping is solid. I'll analyze lyrics later but I'm not expecting much but so far it seems less tame than the rap I'm used to. And that's a great thing

I also dled Drake's album and Kid Cudi's first album.

Kid Cudi's album sounds like the hip hop I'm after: high art rap. But I'll see if it's my thing.

Reviewing some hip hop albums I listened today:

Kid Cudi - Man on the Moon: Talented rapper, good beats, decent lyricist that emphasizes melodrama as opposed to subtlety and emotion. Album is bloated, inconsistent in terms of theme. The album should have been 10 tracks that were solely about the supposed "Man on the Moon" -- Kudi himself -- that delve into his psyche. But, in typical hip hop fashion, the album wanders and peters off and gets boring as fuck. Interesting concept, poor results, extremely average concept album. Concept albums are albums that run with a theme throughout the entirety of the album, whether it be life -- Sgt. Pepper's, Dark Side of the Moon -- or a specific struggle -- in hip hop's case, De La Soul's De La Soul Is Dead, which covers the the loss of hip hop's innocence as a genre as it heads into the 1990's. Really, any theme. Many of these tracks have nothing to do with the supposed Man on the Moon, and if they do, they don't really say much. But that's typical of hip hop. C -

B.o.B - The Adventures of Bobby Ray - Once again, good rapper. Not a bad album. In fact, I really like B.o.B's direction. This album is all over the place in terms of content, but the lyrics aren't bad, and the beats are really great. I wanted to listen to it again after listening to it the first time. I haven't wanted to do that with a new hip hop artist in years. I'd give it a C+ but I like the album so much I'm willing to settle with a B-

Drake - Thank Me Later -Drake's album is good sex music. Gets my endorsement. I enjoyed this the most out of the hiphopsters. I'm not big on Lupe -- overhyped -- or Kid Cudi -- content isn't too substantial -- but Drake doesn't hide behind faux intellectualism and just rolls with it. His lyrics aren't deep but they're fun, his rapping is solid, and the production is great. The mix of rap and singing almost reminds me of Rhythm and Gangsta, but with a modern twist. Either way, it's a great album. B

My search for quality hip hop continues. Note to rappers: when you have albums that are more than 11-12 tracks you start to tread on the edge of boring me to death. 9-11 songs is the sweet spot. Almost all the best albums have that amount of tracks. This always seems the case with rap and these albums that get boring halfway is sooooo tired.

Giving Drake's album, which boils down to "I have bitches, hoes, and new friends I don't know" a B is almost laughable given your criticisms of albums with considerable more depth. And I actually think his album is alright.

B.o.B's album is an utter disaster imo, best described here
