This Guru story is getting crazy. Recap: Guru has a heart attack. His manager/producer Solar takes over, releases statements about Guru not wanting "people from his past" interfering in the matter. Guru wakes out of the coma and allegedly releases a statement that mirror's Solar's statement concerning this being a private matter, and telling people to gtfo.

A couple days ago Guru's nephew releases a video saying Solar is not allowing Guru's family to visit him.

Many people in the hip hop world begin scratching their heads and wondering wtf is going on. On her website Miss Info says the entire affair doesn't make sense unless a life partner is making these decisions, then quickly deletes the post.

Today, Guru's nephew released a statement saying he has been barred from visiting his uncle, who is still in the hospital.
Quote
"We approached the information desk in the main lobby of the hospital. We were asked “how can i help you gentlemen” by the intake woman at the front desk. Justin replied: ”i’m here to visit my uncle keith elam”. The rather nice but professional older woman who asked the first question raised her eyebrow and responded: ”lemme check the list”. Her first response after checking the first list was ”well your name is not on this list let me check the other list”. She then continued: ”oh ok, your name is on this list, i’m sorry i cannot allow you to go see the patient”. Yeah let that marinate. It seems like there were two lists, one list (the first list she looked at) had the names of people allowed to visit (the patient). The other list (the second list she checked) had the names of people who were not allowed to visit (the patient)"
http://www.the9elements.com/2010/03/guru-nephew-blacklisted-prohibited-from.html

And apparently Solar is going to give an interview (wtf?) on the matter. Does he think this is some game? Someone's life is threatened his family wants to visit him, while Solar uses the drama to promote himself apparently. wtf...

I can't think of a different explanation for this. And Miss Info might have let it slip earlier, talking about life partners

http://djpremierblog.blogspot.com/2010/03/gurus-nephew-update-us-with-new-video.html

Apparently someone claiming to be Solar's wife claimed to be Guru's sister to visit him at the hospital, with Solar posing as his brother. I really don't see how the hospital hasn't gotten involved at this point.

Even if Guru is a flaming fhagurt, it wouldn't take away anything from all the classics him and Premo made as Gangstarr. In fact I'd have mad respect for any rapper who fronted like he was straight to come out and say "hell yes I'm gay" (Erick Sermon, I'm looking at you).

It would make "Ex Girl to the Next Girl" a little weird, though.

Sermon is gay? I've briefly heard the rumor before, but didn't look into it.

Guru's category is untouchable, and even if it wasn't being gay would be irrelevant; who cares (well outside of homophobic rap fans). His career has been over for some time, thanks to Solar. I really wonder what happened between Premier and Guru; was it just jealousy over money, considering Premo made good money outside Gangstarr due to producing. I could see people yapping in Guru's air about being taken advantage of/stolen from, and deciding to go solo. But at the end of the day, if he had  stayed he would have made more money than he is now, simply from touring with Premo. Hip hop is full of dumb business moves made due to bullshit.

Yeah man I'm pretty sure Erick is gayer than five dudes blowing six dudes. Remember how he jumped out of a third story window many years ago, supposedly because he'd rather have a date with concrete than face the husband of the chick he was boning? Hell no, he jumped out the window because he was almost going to be caught out there chugging cock.

Not that I care about that shit, but like you said - homophobic rap fans. However, listen to Rampage sometime and tell me if Parrish and Erick don't say some gaaaaaaaay shit in there. Parrish even tries to throw people off the trail by yelling "you fhagurt"!

And as far as Premo and Guru going their separate ways... I think it's due to Gangstarr just being over and done. Remember "The Ownerz"? Yeah, neither do I.

Oh and Solar actually did produce some dope shit back in the 90s if I remember correctly.

Lots of hip hop heads I know/respect were heaping praise on Slaughterhouse's album but I thought it was the definition of average. Average beats with four battle rappers trading bad metaphors. But Ortiz is the type of punchline battle rapper who can create some damn good songs. Not a fan of Royce anymore; dude has some of the worst metaphors this side of Lil Wayne. Crooked is eh. Budden is a bitch but he can rhyme, can't say I'm a fan though.

but yea that's the best Premo beat I've heard in awhile. Maybe since Watch How it Go Down

Though the guy is born performer unlike other rappers who just dial it in at shows.

Jay Electronica, Blu, and J Cole>>>*

Wu Massacre is pretty disappointing, although it does have a few good tracks. At one point will rappers realize major labels don't do shit unless you're a major artist. Go independent, make money, do what the fuck you want to do without the label rushing you, etc. That album is barely 30 minutes of thrown together shit, just to capitalize on Raekwon's recent success.

I feel bad for anyone who actually paid sticker price for Wu Massacre. It's basically an EP with mixtape-level tracks, poorly mastered, shoddily put together etc. etc. It's not terrible by any means but it's not worthy of being called an album.

Plus, the production list is laughable. The one RZA beat (Our Dreams) is meh, but at least it's mastered correctly. Someone explain to me why Ghostface, Raekwon, and Method Man can't get decent producers to work with them. It's not money.

All the producers seem to be minor Wu people, weed carriers and people RZA "mentored". Then again so was most of CLII and that still had pretty fantastic production all around. I just think WM was thrown together at the last minute and no one really gave it much thought. It's weird when the album artwork looks like the thing that the most time and care went into on an album. SMHHHHH

Lots of people complained about CLII's production (see: Saint Cornelius). I like it but it's a mixture of old Dilla beats, throwaway Dre beats, and samples you've heard before. I doubt the production is better than the original version of CLII, which was all RZA.

Somewhat interesting thread about underground hip hop, focusing on Rawkus records and why it folded. That post especially, at least for Shake.

Today there's Rhymeslayers and Stones Throw among others, in terms of influential independent labels with good lineups. Yet while many people are familiar with indie rock/pop/etc, they still aren't familiar with the independent scene outside of older artists like Mos or Kweli. That kinda goes back to my Pitchfork complaint about them giving no coverage to anything indie unless it's a staple of the movement (Mos/Kweli/El-P, Atmosphere, etc). Last year they gave a (negative) review to Tanya Morgan's album Brooklynati; that was a case of  them actually reviewing an album that was making news across the hip hop blogs/review sites. Usually stuff like that is ignored.
