I love this song so much. The live version they did on KEXP a couple years back is even better with all the Seattle area namedrops.

Okay, now that I've gone through three of the major new mainstream rappers everyone talks about time to see what the fuck this Y Society thing is.

Better be good.

I'm tired of mediocre hip hop. Kanye's album better be good.

The worse thing about the album is that Insight (the rapper) has a Kool G Rap-esque sloppy voice/delivery. But on most tracks he's easy to understand. Dude used to be homeless

I don't really listen to old school shit, there's club shit but that's not hip-hop to me. J Cole seems to me the next upcoming rapper that has talent and mainstream appeal. I really can't be bothered 'searching' anymore to prove that hip hop isn't dead.

Atlantic (BoB's label btw) has been dicking Lupe around all year for a catchy single, refusing to release his album until he delivers one. Few weeks ago they came to an agreement to release it next year. That track is the first single. Sounds horrible

Yea I understand that, but releasing a cookie cutter pop rap song shouldn't be required to be able to release your album. Lupe's last album was very successful, and while it had a poppy single at least it wasn't pathetic/forced. Take a page from Eminem and do some inspirational "you can dooo it" single jeez. And typical his singles are good

Drake is cool I find his lines funny, I have only heard Day and Night (ironic) from Kudi and from what I hear on the radio BoB is really poppy.

Cole's verse isn't brilliant lyrically (compared to his other stuff- I think he dumbed himself down) but you can tell he wants it.

Threw that mixtape on shuffle last night to check it out and this verse from Before I'm Gone had me all :omg :omg :omg

Quote
The more distinguished black fellows sayin’
Cole the wrong one bringin’ the city shine
All he ever doin’ is paintin’ pictures of crime
Tellin’ stories of pain, paintin’ pictures of dope
Bitch if you listen I’m paintin’ pictures of hope
That boy in class embarrassed because he broke
Hopin’ today he won’t be the butt of somebody’s jokes
See me; I lived it all from dirt-poori in a trailer
Worried about my mother and never trustin’ my neighbors
To middle-class with a backyard and my own room
To bein’ the only black kid in my homeroom
academically gifted and followed my own rules
Was runnin’ the streets hey ma I’ll be home soon
Was out chasin’ ho’s, was out hoopin’
Them distinguished black fellows wasn’t ballin’ but yet they was foul shootin’
So meet the newest role model who don’t know how to fake this shit
Never sold a rock and look I made it bitch

I slept on J. Cole big time

There are only a few poppy or for the ladies tracks; I'm fine with that given he's got a large female following as well. Stuff like Higher is pop as hell, but it's dope in a 90s hip hop single way. The song with Drake grew on me, but it's still not great.

imo though the songs range from good to amazing for the most part. His sing rhyming/scat rapping fits perfectly on tracks and reminds me of when Snoop used to do the same thing.

imo

CD>LR>MBDTF>>>Graduation

The album is weird in the sense that it has such a poppy vibe yet Kanye rips nearly every song with a vicious flow/some good punchlines. Definitely a step forward in terms of his rapping, but lyrically it lacks the variety and introspection of his first two albums. It's definitely an upgrade over Graduation though, which might as well have been a dope instrumental album given how weak the rhymes were.

I will dl Dark Fantasy.

I'm expecting it to go to like this though:

808s = CD > LR > DF >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Graduation

I listened to LR and CD for the first time in a while this past weekend and....CD beat it. I used to think LR was better, and I still do in some ways (the production mostly), but in terms of content and general structure, CD wins.

Real interesting comments from J Cole
Quote
“When The Warm Up dropped, I watched that grow legs and work for me for a year straight. I saw it reaching people every day. With this, what’s really overwhelming—in a good way—is the amount of people. It’s all positive feedback, but the amount of people who hit me on Twitter or sent a text or quote lines on Twitter has been overwhelming. I seen people who I knew from college make comments like, ‘Wow, everybody on my timeline is quoting J. Cole.’ It’s a really cool feeling knowing that I reached a group of people I wasn’t reaching before. Hopefully, more people will see the type of music I’m trying to bring to the people.

“This mixtape was a part of my plan. I told everybody I didn’t want to release an album that was really good that went under the radar. An album that no one was interested in and only my fans got it, so only 50,000 the first week. I’m not all about first-week numbers, but I don’t want to work this hard and then have it go over people’s heads. So the mixtape is the first step to getting on that next level, and getting on more people’s radar. I think it exceeded my expectations of that. That’s step one. The next step is a single and from there it’ll lead to the album. And then the label will be comfortable putting it out. I believe in a body of work, but I do need a smash hit single. If I want to be in the game and do arenas one day, you need to have smash hit singles. But it’s possible to have smash hit singles, still be who you are, and put out classic albums.”
http://www.complex.com/blogs/2010/11/17/j-cole-talks-about-his-g-o-o-d-friday-verse-jay-electronica-friday-night-lights/

The mixtape has created more buzz than most big singles do. It shut down nearly every popular hip hop blog, and the word of mouth is amazing. Sure you need a big single, I recognize and accept that in 2010. I have more faith in Cole than most artists; I can honestly say I'm not worried about his album being half R&B, half fail singles, one hit record, etc. I hope he finds a couple songs catchy enough to satisfy the suits so we can hear his album.

On a side note, will Roc Nation expect the same from Jay Electronica? He's not the type to even try to make hit records - dude makes straight up hip hop. What are the label's expectations for him? I can't imagine he would have signed if he wasn't guaranteed a large level of freedom.

I'm really excited for J. Cole. He's got a lot of talent and a good head on his shoulders in terms of knowing how to enter the mainstream. Hopefully it works out for him. Both The Warm Up and FNL have a good mix to please just about every kind of hip hop fan. I'm curious as to whether or not he's going to keep doing that or focus on a single sub-genre.
