Anyone listen to the Combat Jack Show?
http://thecombatjackshow.com/category/show/#.UA2h_KCJ6iA

Infinitely amusing shit, to the point I often skip through the music just to hear these dudes (Combat Jack, former editor of Vibe; Dallas Penn, sneaker head/blogger; Just Blaze; Premium Pete, another sneaker head, and some others) talk shit, debate, and just wild out

I went to a show hosted by Combat Jack last year w/ Action Bronson (before he was famous) and Danny Brown (before XXX) and Maffew Ragazino (who should be famous) and it was fucking hilarious

Combat Jack was working the grill and before acts he would come out and hype up the crowd and yell shit like "INNA NETS"  and "IN TER NEEEEEEEEETS"  over and over and over and over.  It was amazing.  My GF and I will still yell "INNA NETS" at each other from time to time.

If you want entertaining podcasts check out "Stay Hatin'" out of San Francisco.  Good banter with 3 white dudes listening to the most thuggish music they can find on any given week.  If you want something with just banter you can't do better than "Tacos and Chocolate Milk" in which two failed underground rappers just shoot the shit and talk mostly about music.  It's absolutely fucking hilarious.

Ahhh someone told me Stay Hating was dope and I totally forgot to check them out. Gonna have to check that out

Agreed on  Maffew Ragazino btw. I've been somewhat surprised at how peaceful the "new*" NY scene is, compared to the early 00s when dudes were taking shots at each other left and right. The Outdoorsmen dudes, Roc Marciano, Exquire, etc are getting major shine while Maffew is kind of ignored. I'm kind of surprised he isn't taking shots at people yet.

btw The Alchemist's new album is amazing. First three features btw are AG The Coroner, Meyhem, and Action; major cosign for them. Exquire is on the album too, so is Roc...but no Maffew.

thought on God Forgives I Don't?

Teflon Don was one of the best mainstream rap album I've heard in awhile. Very focused, short, and nearly every song did its job. GFID is more sprawling and repetitive, and sonically reminds me more of Deeper Than Rap. I figured Ross would just release an album full of heavy bass BMF knock offs, but it seems like he released most of those on his mixtape earlier this year. A lot of the production on this album are more smooth, low synths than the booming shit Ross is more recently known for. The Justice League tracks sounds like some jazz fusion stuff.

Ross' flow continues to improve, as is the shit talking. Yet at the same time while I understand this is a victory lap album, I would have hoped to hear some more personal shit from him if he truly wants to contend for being seen as a great MC, not just a dope rapper.

Overall the "for the ladies" songs still suck, while most of the bangers do their job yet nothing touches BMF, while the cruise control smooth tracks continue to be solid riding music. Overall I'd say the album isn't bad, but is kind of average.

Sixteen has to be a song of the year contender though. Classic Andree 3000 verse and his lol-worthy guitar solo is endearing

Afropunk was pretty incredible.

Phony PPL did a cover of Bonita Applebaum which surprisingly wasn't horrible.  The guy didn't have Tip's voice but the live band backing made up for it to a degree.

Gordon Voidwell was amazing even if his keyboardist was detained by the police and missed the set except for one song.

Janelle Monea played with a more than full band.  She had a drummer, two percussionists, the usual keyboardist (with four synths) and guitarist along with a string section (well 2 people playing electric stringed instruments) and a horn section.  She tore that shit up.

Eryka Badu brought out Yasiin Bey and diva'd a little bit by not going on until 30 minutes after her start time (quelle surprise).

Cerebal Ballzy was too drunk to play well but this isn't really a surprise to anyone who has ever seen them before.

Ninjasonik got rowdy on the skate ramp but was NOTHING compared to Flatbush Zombies who had their entire crew out on Sunday and were blasting people with 40s and shit.

Gym Class Heroes cancelled because their lead singer is apparently sick enough to be in the hospital

Das Racist was inedible playing old songs (Hugo Chavez!) and bringing out Despot and Meyhem Lauren.

The weather was damn near perfect.  Overcast on Saturday so the sun wasn't brutal and slightly cooler on Sunday but sunny with less humidity.

Shit was nice and more than made up for last year's cancelled show.  Amazing that 3 years ago they were in BAM!'s (Brooklyn Academy of Music) parking lot and now a two day multistage festival.

I took some shots of DR and I'm really happy with how they turned out for the most part (Mey kept in the dark for most of his verses)

I took 700 photos that i'm whittling down for a set to go live.  We had other people covering the bands so I just shot the sports and crowds while my gf shot portraits of musicians and attendees.  I only have shots of Das Racist really, because I am a stan.

thank you,

the mixtape is honestly nothing special.  it's basically young punk hip hop.  trap songs about getting fucked up with songs that are more hooks than verses but live they're a hell of a lot of fun because they have a crew that always comes out and it gets rowdy.

Mercy

King of Hearts

edit: Hmmm...according to wikipedia these are confirmed tracks.

"Mercy"
"Cold"
"New God Flow"
"Perfect Bitch"
"Clique"

Out of those...Mercy sucks, Cold sucks, New God Flow is really good and a good evolution from Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, as is Clique.

So we're half and half since Perfect Bitch hasn't been released. Looks like my friend was wrong. SMH.
