You know, wouldn't it make more sense for steam to offer deals on games they DIDN'T offer during the xmas sale for the first few months?
You know, instead of offering the same games from the sale but for even cheaper so they piss off their entire fanbase.

SHUT THE FUCK UP.

I missed the KB deal during the Christmas Sale because I didn't know anything about the game. Buying it now. :heart Steam

EDIT: Should I spring for both or just Armored Princess? I hear AP is just like the first one except better in every possible way.

KB has a better tutorial, but AP is literally better in every way possible. Common allies get new skills, there's more spells, more quests, more variety. It's an upgrade in every way- You have nothing to gain by playing KB first, except an appreciation or the improvements in AP. Given that they're both long, difficult games, you'll probably only wanna play one. Make it AP

THIS IS SO DIFFICULT.

I played more AP today. Do it. It;s literally an upgrade in every possible way. Here are a few:

-Basic units get more/new abilities to make them more than punching bags for the first 4 hours.
-You no longer have to run back and forth to turn in quests. Some quests get auto-turned-in on completion
-Better navigation. More unique world map with more open-ended play.
-Pet Dragon is awesome and adds a nice extra tactical dimension
-Paladin is balanced better
-Everything looks better
-Better animations (Also, your hero gets off her fucking horse when she's indoors.)
-More units help open up the game a little bit, especially after the first tier guys
-FLYING HORSE THANK GOD
-Get a boat ASAP, improved "Fast-Travel" navigation means no more sailing the wrong way for 10 minutes.

AP also has a wacky, nutty big difficultly spike about 1/4 through the game that will make players who aren't familiar with the system (and how to abuse it) weep in anguish. It's definitely surmountable provided that you know the basics in terms of which troops are good and which ones are bad and recruit properly, though.

Maybe it's not as pronounced on medium difficultly. I played through the spike on impossible and hard and thought it was ridiculous and that someone who hadn't played KB would be annihilated by it.

Raban- It's 11.75 for BOTH on Steam right now. Get both, play KB for like 6 hours, then hop into AP and enjoy the upgrades. (PROTIP: Options, Battle Animations to "FAST")

Apparently Bioshock 2 will be getting a 4-pack deal.  That means it might be like borderlands and L4D2 where you can get it for around $30.

If you buy four copies of Bioshock 2 at once they are $34 each.

You would have to give me your steam key and $34. In exchange you would get Bioshock 2. (And Bioshock 1!)

I might actually be in for this after all if you still have room, Patel. Bioshock 2 is using SSA auth with GWFL, so basically once it's activated you're stuck with it.

X-COM, or at least the original UFO Defense, is timeless. I don't mean that in the usual, "oh I'm attached to this game because I grew up with it/love it" but in the sense that everything that normally "dates" a game and causes it to feel old doesn't seem to apply to X-COM.

Freedom Force games are fun but a lot more forgettable for me. I don't like comics so I suppose that's why.

Frag, can you recommend a good X-COM tutorial? The early game seems very dependent on a large manual that did not come with the Steam version. ;)

http://www.xcomufo.com/usg.html

A must-read for all new X-COM players. It goes into some really important things, notably:

a) Base placement and construction
b) Early tech priorities (laser rifies ,armor, heavy plasma)
c) recruitment (or, more importantly, firing shitty newhires)

and much, much more. This is such a good guide and it'll get you up and actually understanding what is going on in UFO Defense pretty quickly.

awesome, thanks. I've tried twice to get into X-COM and the lack of any sort of guidance has been a challeng. Not that I "expect" it, of course, but the gentle tutorial mission curve of the late 90s and 00s is completely fucking absent. HERE IS EARTH, ALIENS LANDED, YOU GONNA KILL THEM OR WHAT.

It is. I picked up the pack when it first released on Steam last year and I remember posting about the difficulty in one of the gaming threads here. Really fun game, and the generic characters are pretty hilarious.

Torchlight is the sort of game that gets right to the point: killing bad guys and getting loot. That's it and that's all. There's some powers you can level up and so on, but it's all secondary stuff. It's more like Diablo 1.

Titan Quest has far deeper skill trees and has a much broader range of locations and towns and sidequests to do. It's more like Diablo 2.
