Alien vs Predator Classic 2000 is $2 on sale (down from $5)

I played it for a while with my 360 pad, and then I remembered how much the 360 D-Pad sucks balls.  :yuck

how is it?

Steam has had some of the lamest sales lately. $9 off MW2, $3 off AVP 2000, come on Gabe. :wtf

Dark Void Zero seemed pretty good from what little I played it, if you like these fake 8-bit games like Megaman 9 & 10.

Liberty City Stories is now on Steam for $29.99. I may pick this up, I never played them on the Xbox, but everybody seems to think they were great. I picked up GTA4 during the sales for $6.75 and it runs....okay on my rig. I may wait to see if they've optimized these any for the PC (probably not).

I'm curious to hear if they optimized the game.  I heard some rumors they were going to optimize it this time around so it didn't run terrible like GTAIV.

Rockstar just released a patch for GTAIV that includes some performance optimization and improved memory usage. Maybe it runs better now too.

Can you really benchmark with a poorly optimized game?

I mean your specs should kill this game and run it at like 3000x2000 at 120fps.  You are running what is basically a straight port of a X360 game on hardware 10-50x more powerful.  At least in JC2's case, the game wasn't a straight port and the PC version had a lot more tech stuff in the engine which pushed up the reqs.

Rockstar just released a patch for GTAIV that includes some performance optimization and improved memory usage. Maybe it runs better now too.

Yeah, they've actually improved performance quite a bit.  Before, on my 1gb card, I can only max out if I'm using medium textures.  Now, I can max out everything except shadows, even when I"m using high textures.  For shadows, I only have to dial it down one notch from very high to high.  Even with much higher settings than before, I'm getting the same framerates which means that the game is performing faster.

One warning about the patch though.  I haven't noticed it myself but some people are complaining that Rockstar dialed back down some stuff such as physics & draw distance in order to up the performance.  So don't apply the patch if you love your rag doll physics.

I think people haven't given GTA4 credit for how much its engine is doing.  When you dial up everything on the PC at 1080P, it's actually doing a lot of stuff.  Comparing the PC version to the console versions is not really an apples to apples comparison.  At most, the consoles are doing about 30% of the max on PC and that's only at 720p for the 360 and less than that on the PS3.  Sure, it could be better optimized but it really isn't that bad.  My main peeve is that performance doesn't scale well with multiple GPUS but that isn't a concern for most PC gamers.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that I purchased the new GTA4 episodes on Steam.  They both look quite a bit nicer than the original game.  I don't know if it's art or engine update but they just look more vibrant.  Gay Tony seems to be more system demanding though.  It's about 30% slower when running at the same settings as the other two games.

Buy it at Fry's though if there's one near you.  It's only $25.  That's why I hate buying stuff at Steam unless they're having some crazy 50% off sale.

The new patch also did away with that annoying background app, Rockstar Social Club or whatever it's called.

I popped in GTA IV pc after months and installed the patch. It did in fact improve performance, especially the load times which are next to nothing now. One thing I have noticed is driving in dash cam makes the framerate dip for some reason, while the other modes run smooth. It doesn't matter what is going on in-game, it still chugs. Not a big deal. Also, the shadows still look like shit on my average machine. I might post some screens and/or movies later. I much prefer the PC version to the console version  8)

Yeah, that's what I was saying.  The console versions might seem to run better but that's only because they're running at much worse settings than most PCs.

Woo, buncha new crap on Steam! Aquanox 1 & 2 (lol), some sub-$5 casual games (I tried KrissX, it was garbage), World Basketball Manager (spreadsheets ahoy!), Puzzle Chronicles (played the demo, it blew hard, and $18 are you kidding me? not worth it) and Dark Fall 3 (Looks cool, but I'm not sure if I want to drop $27 on it right now). Also P.B. Winterbottom, which is $5 and awesome.

It gets old pretty fast, plus the game is kinda broken (it's really easy to grind on early stages and become unstoppable). Still better than Puzzle Chronicles though, that game is shite.
