Out now. Dev team did Fran Bow which was fantastic. Picked this up day 1 to support them but probably won't play it for a while because playing too much other stuff.

Played a bit of this, it's great and fucked up and presentation quality is much improved from Fran Bow, but it's also one of those more modern "adventure" games where there's no inventory, not really puzzles and even calls itself an "interactive story" vs being an adventure game. There's interaction and choices but as an old school click & point fan I'll never get why developers are thinking it's better to ditch the gameplay aspects of adventure games and make them more like visual novels. The only reason I can think of is that creating good puzzles design is hard and slows down development when they just want to tell an interactive story.

I'm not talking the transitions, apparently doing ANYTHING in the client is a performance hit (#IGuessThatsWhyTheyCallItBETAXD) according to some folks on reddit. But I haven't ran into issues with a like... 7+ year Win10 install on like 6-7 year hardware.

You do seem a little bummed out about how it turned out. Seeing them label it as an interactive story though seems to make sense. It's probably something I would enjoy so I do appreciate you bringing it to my attention.

Looks like they've tracked down some of those performance issues:
Quote
The Steam Client Beta has been updated with the following changes:

Note: This update includes a number of fixes for making sure users can keep GPU web view acceleration on without negatively impacting GPU usage when Steam is not in use or a game is running. GPU web view acceleration is important for good new library and friends ui performance. If you have previously disabled GPU acceleration this update would be a good time to try it again.

General:
Improvements to prevent new library doing any animation/GPU work when the library window is covered by other windows or games regardless of GPU acceleration settings
Some library animations now pause when the library window does not have keyboard focus or mouse hover, even if the window may be visible
Fixed a steamwebhelper memory leak impacting Mac and Linux users and some Windows overlay browser usage if GPU acceleration for web views was on
Fixed web view GPU acceleration to default on for Mac and Linux
Fixed library failing to load for some users with very large numbers of non-Steam games

Which games were in the mystery box?
The "mystery box" was the games that'd release at the start of every month.

So if you do classic you still choose, or you just get them all?
Depends on how many games there are. You get ten choices and the plan is cheaper, you stay grandfathered in unless you cancel.

The one description makes it sound like Classic will often just be the same as before but no "early unlock" they'll all be revealed at once. The new subscribers won't be able to get them all. At the same time the other infographic suggests there might be more than ten games a month at some point but not right away.

It's usually been like what, seven games a month or so? Especially if the early unlock is a big title. (edit: looks like it's been eight or nine most months for the last two years)

They're trying to bump up the price on new subscribers and get rid of the multi-month plans in exchange for "cheaper" plans that are more limited. Even the store discount is taking a hit for the lower end.

I have no plans to bail out yet, especially after they gave me that store credit when they didn't need to, and then how they just gave me SPYROOOOO. Plus in general it's been a pretty good run of stuff I might quite want at some point for way cheaper than it'd ever be on sale. :pitbull

The mystery box was the worst, because third-fourths of it was :no1curr material.

At least letting you pick what you want to throw your money down the well for this time around could be better. But I guess sales were so shit that they have to lock folks in now. :doge

I get like humble monthly was pretty good when it started and for like the first year... but as it went on everything was  :no1curr except for the early unlocks. So if you didn’t want those, then you might as well just not get it.

I did resub this month to see how the pick 10 looks. But we will see if I keep
It.

Edit: 20% discount is pretty solid. It’s basically like GCU for pc games.

How is paying more for less games better? Even if you don't want most of the games the value is way better.

$132 for ~120 games + 20% discount versus $135 for 36 games + 10% discount. :idont

Even if you don't want most of the games the value is way better.

No it isn't. Unless you plan to sell those keys. Paying $12 for 3 titles is "ok," if I'm getting $60 worth (like the Deus Ex month) out of it. Getting a bunch of indies isn't "better value" unless you plan to play those indies. Which... I'm not. :doge So for me, the value of the mystery box was worthless, double-so with my distaste toward the whole mystery box aspect of the entire thing (Pay $12 to get... some shit you may/may not want! Yay!).

I only paid for two months: The Deus Ex and this month (for Spyro and Crash). The rest either had shit I already got on Steam sales (Thereby :some1curr ) or was indie kusoge (:no1curr ) so the value preposition was worthless.

I'm not surprised others did what I did: Subbed and then quickly unsubbed. Maybe if the months had a bunch of killer things that were solid but not shit I already bought on Steam sale (like Slay the Spire in August), people would've stuck around/it'd been more successful. But I don't fault others for doing the same shit I did with "hard pass."

I'll eat the $4 increase monthly if their shit is worth paying that much. If not, I'll pass or get the lower tier depending on what shit they get. Either way, dropping the whole mystery box bullshit and letting you see what you're getting for your investment is a better deal.

You're talking about using it as a couple times a year way to get under sale prices. Not as a monthly service that shoves games at you.

The lowest tier doesn't even get any of the monthly games just access to the Trove until their subscription expires.

Neither of the new tiers is a better value proposition than staying grandfathered in with Classic if you actually want the monthly service. It's literally cheaper for more games. Half the games could be Indie Gala tier and you'd still be better off.

Looking back the the previous 5 or so months i missed, there's maybe 3 titles i would've been interested in, and they're probably dirt cheap at this point, so i think i'll pass.
I've had it for one year, and one thing i didn't like, was how you couldn't just pause a month without knowing the titles you'd miss in advance, so that change is a good one, though.
