Who cares.  ODST looks like it plays closer to the original Halo than the other games, which makes me very happy since the original Halo is still the best one.  Good game is a good game.

Uh, what's your reasoning behind this? It has an open world and a bunch of non-Spartan stuff, it looks nothing like the original Halo. :lol

The return of the health meter, slower paced battles, the pistol.  I dunno, from watching the videos I get a very original Halo vibe.

This was an expansion pack that was content complete almost a year ago. It's a flagship title because MS wanted to squeeze $60 out of it, not by the intent of the creators. They wanted to release all 6 Mythic maps last fall and ODST in the spring of this year. iirc it was made by a team of like 12 guys.

You're on the market for this if you enjoy Halo to some degree. If you enjoy Halo you got used to the graphics a long time ago.

If Halo Reach still looks like shit it deserves tons of scorn.

Uh, the 'non-spartans' in this game have the attributes of Master Chief in Halo 1. Fall damage, a health meter, no dual wielding, a scoped pistol.

But you're right, the gameplay scenarios are quite different this time around and that's why the game is worth buying. Firefight is enough for me though.

I'd suck every Bungie dev's dick for them to bring back the original pistol, but all reports indicate that this version is basically just the Halo 2 version with a scope.

I really wish they'd just release a LIVE-supported version of Halo 1

They'd probably change the physics and ruin everything. I just want a direct port. XBC and Halo PC are too laggy, and Halo 2 and Halo 3 bore me to tears

I haven't played it in a long time, but didn't Halo 2's pistol have the same firing rate as the Halo 1 pistol? I'm pretty sure the ODST pistol fires fast, like Halo 3's, but has a scope.

Silicon Knights' Halo would come out in 2015 while somehow looking worse than the 2001 original as well as a new Norse take on the Halo lore.

Rate of fire: H2>H1>H3.
Damage: H1>H3>H2
Accuracy: H1>H3>H2

The H3 pistol also holds 4 less rounds than the other 2 variants.

edit: And that rumor about the ODST pistol being the H2 pistol with a scope is from a GamePro article, so I guess that should be taken with a grain of salt.

People care about the story in Halo? ???

I did.  The Cortana letters, the Marathon connections, Halo 1, the I Love Bees campaign....and then....splat.  Halo 2 came out.  They killed everything that could've been great about universe right then and there.  So much potential wasted on monkeys from outer space.

Oh yeah, I didn't even watch the video of the Bungie nerd demoing it. I guess it does look like the H2 pistol with scope. Might be a little more accurate, but that's it. It's a not a big deal anyway since none of the weapons will be in multiplayer -- I mostly just miss 3 shotting people

Halo 3's multi is still fun, but their playlist manager really needs to put in a little overtime and spruce it up. I'm holding out hope that they will do this for ODST. I'm willing to accept the older style of matchmaking if it means I'll get more variety in my gametypes - but they removed too many good gametypes from Halo 2 (which are still available as defaults in Halo 3 custom games) and there are too many turds floating around that you have to hope get vetoed.

Once COD6 comes out I'll probably be putting that to bed. Firefight is what I'm really hyped for. My friends and I got a ton of time out of Horde and this looks to be even better.

I agree that it would be nice if matchmaking was more customizable. In particular I think it would be nice if you could filter out certain maps. I think MLG only allows 6 or 7 maps out of the 20+ available for multiplayer because of how poor the design is in so many of them are :lol It seems like they have serious problems with balancing anything that is asymmetrical.

I don't know why, though, but the newer Halos just don't hold my attention. I used to play H1 on lagtastic XBC for hours on end, but I'm always bored with XBL multiplayer after 4 or 5 games.

At least the campaigns are always great for the most part.

MLG excludes any DLC maps that cost money because then they'd have to buy the maps for hundreds of XBoxes at their meetups. Which sucks because almost all the DLC maps are AAA and it's the on-disc maps that tend to suck.

I still prefer Halo 3 to CoD4, but not to Bad Company. We all liked Halo 2 more but we've played more games of Halo 3 somehow. I guess because Halo 2 got swept aside by Gears 1 but Halo 3 remained as a reliable standby that we all owned.

Ohh.

I think I'm just losing interest in FPSes entirely, and it probably has little to do with the Halo franchise. Whenever I get the itch I just hop on Source for an hour or 2 and play some Dust2, but I don't have the desire to dedicate entire weekends to em like I used to.

Wow so an expansion has the same graphics as the base game? So thankful for Willco's stunning insights in here

An expansion 2 years in the making, dude. I never had much of a problem with how Halo 3 looked (even if the arguments regarding trade-offs for scale seem a bit funny in hindsight), but I don't think it's unreasonable to expect more from a high profile title after 2 years and with complete console exclusivity.
It was made in 14 months by a smaller team, not 24. OWNED!

http://kotaku.com/5354944/how-and-why-halo-3-odst-was-made-in-14-months

Halo ODST was created in the wake of the cancellation of the PJ project to create some new work to bridge the gap to where they'd go into full production on Halo Reach.

Wait, why would you brag that the game is low budget with a small team & made quickly?  It's not like they're selling it at a budget price.  It's $60 the same as every 20 million dollar 200 man team 2 year developed game.

I don't understand why MS did not put more people on the team to make this into a bigger deal. But I guess they didn't care and figured the Halo name would sell it.

Bungie wanted it to be priced lower. They said it over and over again for months after the announcement. MS made them bundle in the maps to prop up the value and then set the price at $60.

Word. Some of my friends can't stand buying DLC, it is a pain in the ass trying to get matches going that everyone can agree on. But all of them are into buying new retail games, so finally we'll all be on the same page.

The Halo 3 campaign wasn't all that long in the first place, so a campaign that's a touch shorter with Firefight slapped on will definitely get more play from me than the original $60 release did. Gears 2 was a busted piece of shit but it got dozens of hours of play out of us thanks to Horde mode.

I'm would rather have had them put more people on the team and justify the $60 price than bundle stuff.  Reeks of blu-ray prices being jacked up $5-10 by forced bundling of a dvd+digital copy with big movies now.  At least with all these deals you can get it for $30-45 at most places.

I'm on the fence but looking forward to ODST.  Considering I will not play any of the online modes, I just want a good single player campaign and I'd hate to have a gimped one cause they put a short team in a short timeframe on it.  I expect a lot of out of MS's BIGGEST franchise title.

Well, the H3 multiplayer is on a seperate disc, different executable and shows up as H3 multiplayer on Live. It's the full multiplayer.

Firefight and ODST campaign are on the other disc

Firefight videos (probably from the pirated version since only 1 guy is playing)

The $60 price point wasn't selected until the game was already done. From the announcement of the game up until a few months ago, Bungie continually stressed that this was an expansion pack at a lower price. I guess MS realized they didn't have their Alan Wake or Mass Effect or Splinter Cell this fall and they wanted to 1. make $$$ and 2. avoid people overlooking this as a budget release.

The campaign sounds like it's pretty awesome to me though. If I didn't have a group of IRL friends guaranteed to do co op, Firefight, and probably some more multiplayer with me, I would not be buying the game at full price.

Can you get H3 achievements through the ODST multiplayer?

The multiplayer ones, yes.
