Looking for jobs. Sending out resumes.
Anyone else butt-hurt by the economy?

Anyone need a programmer in Los Angeles?
(Don't worry, unlike a certain person who flooded a certain forum whining about a job, this'll be my only post on it)

Sucks dude.

I'm actually contemplating switching jobs, I feel bad talking about it at parties when there are multiple people who can't even find one job.

I never understand why folks don't take up some braindead job while they search for other things within their respective career field.  Not necessarily directed at you Mewthree, but I see people make excuses about a shitty economy when they can go wait tables or do some temp work.

To be fair, there aren't a lot of "shitty" jobs available. You act like people are passing up part-time work, but it's not there. A lot of businesses, including small businesses, are in a hiring freeze.

Well maybe its just my area where I see  openings.  The main problem is that many of these buildings are like, uh, insert revolving door metaphor here.  Business shuts down, building gets renovated, new business opens, fastforward three months, rinse, repeat.

I just remembered how shitty temp work could be though.  I was looking for employment for about 6 months and I remember situations where I would work 6-8 hours and then go to the office and pick up a 20 dollar check.  I take back what I said. AVOID TEMP AGENCIES.

Local anecdotal evidence doesn't really translate well to the nationwide problem with unemployment.

I say this as someone who hired for retail just a few months ago, that there aren't a lot of job openings and the ones that exist - you'll get hundreds of applicants for. People are hungry for work, even stuff like McDonald's, grocery stores, etc.

Times are tough, though.

Well, right now I have one more severance check coming, so I'm not stressing out. If it comes down to it, I'll take a job to get by, but while I have time I'd rather try do what I want to do.

I don't want to say any place is worse than any other, but doing a search on GamaSutra for jobs in LA is sad. :(

That seems like a Polish thing, regarding the whole of Europe as a potential workspace.

Well you've got the whole US a potential workspace and US is bigger than EU so that evens out.

Can Americans work without any problems in Canada?

Well its a little more convenient without a channel and everyone speaks the same language.

no, there are some hoops to jump through if you want to work in Canada, iirc.

My skillset (.NET programming) and my local market (Greensboro/Winston-Salem/High Point, NC) just don't mix right now. Go to dice.com (IT recruiting site) and plug in C# and my zip, and you'll literally get 1 hit today. One. Uno. Even when the economy is great, this local market just isn't the best. Right now, it's just laughable, and this is actually the worst it has been during this current downturn. A couple of weeks ago, there were 6!  :-\

Charlotte (~80 miles away) is coming back, it seems. A month or two ago, there were 20-25 listings on a given day. At last check today, they were back up to 56. While Charlotte is clearly a much bigger city than any of the three main cities in my metro, the overall urban populations aren't too far off. Certainly not to the degree of 56 openings to 1. Charlotte is just a better market for this type of work, has been for years.

I haven't quite gotten to the point where I'll move. But with my present job, it's looking awfully tempting...
