Every forum I know has an inane Sept. 11th thread, so I figured I'd make one here with a bit of Bore zing.

For me, I was making jokes with a kitchen lighter and those tower-like bags of saltines two days later.

So EB, when did your depraved sense of humor begin to come to grasp and help you cope with the events of 9/11?

um, I don't really have a reason to on a regular basis, but I guess when that movie about the crashed flight came out. Flight ### or something. That was more just joking about the movie than anything else.

If it makes you feel better, I had friends who would fly the passenger plane from San Andreas into tall buildings while pretending to speak Arabic. But that was 2004 or 05.

It was doubly awkward because of the act itself and I'm Persian (close enough...yeah)

Yeah I wanted to emphasize that it was my way of coping with the events. There was no malice or mean-spiritedness involved, but it was sort of helpful for me to deal with the whole tragedy thing. My roommate at the time was horrified but saw where I was coming from (as he knew me well).

Edit: Didn't realize that it was an still such an open wound. My apologies for being insensitive.

It's difficult to avoid laughing at the Hulk Hogan thing. I think that was the very first time I enjoyed an off-color Sept. 11th joke. Can't say I've laughed at many after -- not necessarily because it's a sensitive subject, but because they're not funny.

For me, it was probably a couple days, but as others have noted it was done in a manner to cope with the attacks. On the purely intellectual level, I had known for years that it was just a matter of time before something like this happened as a result of our meddlesome foreign policy, but I had always expected it to be a bomb in a subway or something like that. Flying planes into buildings was pretty shocking, which is why I'm sure they did that as opposed to strapping bombs to themselves and then going to a mall or something.

It was probably a couple of years before I started making fun of people who were obviously using 9/11 to achieve some end, whether monetary or political. These days "remember 9/11!" is kind of a punch line that me and a couple friends say to each other whenever someone says something stupid and hides behind patriotism to do it.

Don't know, but pretty fast. One of the first jokes I really remember because it was so damn funny at the time was when someone mockingly said she wouldn't let her twins stand next to each other out of respect for what happened on september the 11th. It was in an online petition protesting the title Lord of The Rings: The Two Towers and the accompanying poster.

i went downtown for halloween with a bunch of people that year, and the club we went to had a costume contest

this couple walked onto the stage dressed as, no lie, the twin towers, with little flags all around

they were booed off the stage

everyone else i was with seemed righteously offended at the crass attempt to win "bags of schwag" off the tragedy - but i found myself laughing at the thought that this couple was so goddamned stupid it hadn't even occurred to them once while making the costumes (and they were fairly elaborate) that this was probably a bad idea

I never really made jokes about 9/11, but as a naive little teenager, for some reason I thought the US would find out who it was and capture them, I didn't expect us to go to war or anything.

The only thing I've ever found funny about 9/11 is that Hulk photoshop, which is absolutely hilarious.

I'm a very patriotic guy, so I never found a direct assault on my country funny. I was naive to think we wouldn't go to war, though. That said, I was NEVER sympathetic towards to those that died. It's hard for me to ever feel the least bit of emotion for someone I didn't know who died.

I remember in grade 10 (2003?) a LA teacher of mine discussing how we don't really care for the victims of tragedies (we were talking about 911 in particular) but instead have a certain fascination with death. I remember it being a rather good discussion.

I don't make fun of the event itself, but I always say shit like:
"Let me get a bite of that"
"Naw man I'm starving and that's gross"
"I can't believe you'd turn me down on the 8th year and 5 month anniversary of 9/11."

just making fun of the way people ran with it to further their own causes. but that's only on the internet and with friends who I know will get that I'm not belittling the event.

It's like aids and the holocaust/hitler jokes...it's not undermining the event, instead, the humor comes from the irony. I guess.

Nothing funny about it. Anyway in terms of what I was doing on that day..

I was homeschooled at the time; I had just finished studying and decided to take a break, turning the tv on. The first plane had already hit, and I assumed it was a horrible accident. Then the second plane hit. It took me awhile to realize what I had just seen, then I remembered my mom was in Chicago visiting relatives. She had told us she was going to go to the Willis Building there, and I remember getting scared as shit wondering if that build was going to be attacked as well

i was a freshman in highschool and in 2nd period french class, the principal came over the pa and told everyone to turn on the tv, both of the buildings were already burning and collapsed 10 minutes later,my teacher was shocked when it happened, i had no idea what i was watching because i didnt even know the buildings existed until that day

Count me in the "laughter as a coping mechanism" camp. To this day I still feel bad for laughing at the image of one of the teachers wearing an Uncle Sam hat, waving a giant flag, and bawling like a giant baby as they blared PROUD TEH BE AN AMERICAN through the speakers. Then again, I was pretty young, and this guy was the biggest asshole of a teacher I've ever encountered.

I think I was legitimately terrified of any planes flying overhead for a while, though.

I don't remember making any specific jokes that but one of my Iranian friends had a birthday on September 11 and a few days later, he and some other friends went into a Starbucks wearing Arab headdresses, making everybody walked out. I thought that was one of the funniest things ever, mostly because they didn't think it would be so insulting (I don't know to who it is actually insulting but apparently it was offensive).

Oh and off-topic but I was much more angry about the general change in attitude/armchair patriotism everybody seemed to be feeling. That was a much longer "tragedy" though.
