Motorstorm PSP rules / GT PSP sucks

Quote
MotorStorm: Arctic Edge is not a pretty game - and not just because, like its big console cousins, it's concerned with rough-and-tumble racing through perilous terrain in angry, roaring machines.

No, MotorStorm's PSP debut simply isn't very good looking. Vehicles are boxy, their deformation patterns strangely triangular, details a tad smudgy.

Looks fine for a PSP game.  But it's also a PS2 game, and like most PSP -> PS2 games, that version would probably look terrible.

Waiting for demo or a way to play the leaked version.  Want to try before deciding if it's worth getting.

And it's pretty funny that Sony is launching this game two or three days before Gran Turismo PSP.  I'm sure someone out there thought it was a good idea to release the two big PSP racing games (since the last Wipeout) at the same time.

I really would like a Motorstorm game like this for the PS3. There's a serious lack of ice and snow racing this generation.

I'm all for mocking Sony but Motorstorm does look really nice for a portable game.

Compare Motorstorm to Ridge Racer.  They don't even seem to be running on the same system.

The PSP actually seems to have the "untapped potential" that PS3 fanboys constantly talk about.

well, motorstorm psp looks bad compared to gran turismo psp.  And the new Jak and Daxter game looks worse than Daxter.  And Assassin's Creed PSP looks really blocky and choppy based on the latest videos.  I don't think the PSP or DS have had any huge leaps in graphics.  Some games still get me like Dissidia and Resistance Retribution (and Okami on the DS)

Gran Turismo is going to use OFW 6.00.  There's speculation that the hackers are waiting/working on that and skipping 5.55.

Yeah, if 6.00 gets an official M33 release I will be stoked.  Mainly because Ys FREAKING SEVEN comes out this Thursday in Japan and I'd really like to import it.  So far games that are cool but don't work on M33 psp:

-Tales of Vs.
-Ys I/II
-Motorstorm

and soon Gran Turismo & Ys Seven

Hope they hack it!

Yeah, I wouldn't mind trying out Tales Of Vs. and Motorstorm.  I have Tenchu 3 shelved waiting for an update, too.

Dunno if Dark Alex will do another update, but rumor has it the GEN team is getting 6.00 ready.

I've heard all the non-M33 firmwares are buggered and have a good chance of breaking your psp :(  Otherwise I'd have updated to 5.50 as there is a group that did that.

I really hope Dark Alex does 6.00.  I don't trust these other guys and my Pandora battery died over a year ago so I can't fix my psp if it bricks.

I'm pretty sure Tales of VS has some sort of protection on it, not just the firmware hurdle.

Well maybe if a 6.0 M33 comes out at least the disc version will work?  I'd buy it since I have a near complete Tales collection.

Can you go straight from an M33 firmware -> Sony official firmware or will it brick?

I have a 2nd PSP-1000 that's M33 3.something and hasn't been turned on in 2 years.  I wouldn't mind updating it to official 6.0 just so I can play some of these games.

*edit actually it's 1.50, just checked

Just have a nice guy in Japan buy you points :)  I do that and then last time I was there on a trip I grabbed a $100 one which has lasted me a while so far (if you're not buying full priced PSP games, it goes a looooong way)

The reports I read since 5.03+ said he was still in the hacking business but just didn't do 5.x because he felt they were not worth the time.  Seems like 6.00 would be since it's a major update.

There are more than credible rumors of a PSP 4000 that could be released in the future.  I'd say hold off for that a bit.   It's supposed to follow up the 3000 and not the Go.

And honestly, with the exception of Dissidia, which I needed to pirate so I could play it on my trip early (own the retail copy now), I haven't missed CFW too much on my 3000 when it comes to PSP games.  I still have Outrun 2 on my 2000 since that game is one of the ones that gets much better with 333 on CFW.  Since I upgraded my 2000 to 5.50 oe-b a few weeks ago, I was hoping to at least demo the upcoming number of PSP games before I decided to buy, but I guess that can't happen now.

Once all PSP games have a data install option, I don't care about custom firmware anymore.  But until they do it's still a big deal for me because I refuse to play PSP games with load times after years of instant loading for everything.

So, GT PSP sounds like a mess.  It still looks ridiculously good for a portable game, and the racing is supposed to be GT4, and there are something like 800 cars and 50 tracks...but no career mode.  All there is to do is quick race, time trial, drift trial or license tests.  No online either.  What's worse is how you buy cars.  Every day the game lets you buy a car from four manufacturers; if you want the Bugatti Veyron, you have to wait for a day that Bugatti is selectable.  And all races get you is money, not cars or anything else.

IGN's review of Gran Turismo PSP:

Sounds like Bebpo was right.   :(

It could have been the free GOTY.

It's interesting that IGN pointed out that the graphics are good but not the best on the PSP.  Which of the current PSP racers look better than GT?

Did they specifically mention racers when talking about the graphics?  If not, I think Tekken 5 DR (soon to be Tekken 6) and Soul Calibur BD have the best visuals on the PSP.  Maybe God Of War Chains Of Olympus too.

The second issue, which is actually not quite as debilitating (but still annoying), is that the game runs on a calendar system and on each day you can only buy vehicles from four manufacturers. Every two days these four choices change to offer up new cars to pick from. So, one day you might have Honda, Toyota, Mugen and Daihatsu, whereas two days later you might be able to pick from Ford, Lamborghini, RUF and Mitsubishi. Note that you have no idea what manufacturers will be available when, so you can't say, "Oh, Ferrari will be available in two days." It could be 100 days for all you know. Also, even if a manufacturer is available on a day, you will only have access to a limited number of its vehicles at any given time. By my count, you can purchase about a dozen at a time at most, though you might also only be able to choose from one or two cars. So when Lamborghini or Ferrari does eventually show up, don't count on being able to totally stock up as your selection may be very limited.

There is no “Career Mode” included within. Instead you choose from one of the 35 tracks or any of their variations (different configurations of some, and reverse mode on all,) and work your way up from Class D to Class A on each. You start with 100k credits, which is nice because you can pick-up two or three cars right out of the gate

sounds like their is a "pseudo progression", just not the one people are used to.

The buying stuff is so wrong though  :lol

Wow, talk about dragging GT in the mud. I can't believe they would release a GT game that merits a sub-7 score from a site like IGN.

As an aside, I really wish the PSP Go didn't suck shit. I would like to have a PSP that I could keep on OFW so I could dick around with new games and PS3 demos without having to go through a hassle.

Sony is really on crack if they think that GT PSP is going to sell PSP Go :yuck

Europe has started boycotting PSP Go,

Quote

Holland's largest specialised retail outlet, Nedgame, has decided not to sell the PSPgo this October. And, the shop explained to Eurogamer Holland, there are a handful of reasons why.

The hefty price-tag of €249.99 being one of them. That's €80 more than the PSP-3000 costs, a difference Nedgame believes the new handheld does not justify - the smaller screen is picked out as an example.

A more telling reason is the lack of a UMD drive. That means Nedgame cannot sell games for the PSPgo, which is where retailers make the most profit. And, as downloadable games will be tied to PSN accounts, trading and swapping will fast become a thing of the past.

Nedgame also mentioned its discomfort at Sony creating a monopoly on the software sold on PSPgo.

Eurogamer Holland goes on to point out that Nedgame are not the only Dutch outlet to boycott Sony's new handheld.

Eurogamer Spain has also heard rumblings that retailers there may do the same.

thanks to Yoshihiro I was able to try both of these out

Gran Turismo PSP:  Really boring.  After GT5p and especially the Forza 3 demo, this feels like an awkward time between GT1/2 and 3/4; it's not arcadey nor does it seem to have something resembling a sim.  It's very static and dull.  No sense of speed even though initially the graphics seem nice.  I thought the driving would be on par with GT4, but it's not.  Boring driving + stunning distinguished mentally-challenged game structure = why would you buy this?

Motorstorm PSP:  It's Motorstorm PR on the PSP, ergo FUCK AWESOME.  Game looks fine and has a lot more going on than GT PSP.  Only positive change is that the third person camera is now a lot more usable, which is nice for smaller vehicles.  Um, other thing that would have been nice is custom soundtracks, but whatever.  One weird thing is that the game defaults to "motorstorm" controls that don't make sense on the PSP.  "Motorstorm" controls are R/L for accel/brake, but the PSP hs digital triggers.  It lets you switch to normal X/[], and even use d-pad to steer, it was just odd.  And I did hear that the game starts out easy, and that seems to be true, but it should get harder according to the same people.  Other than those issues, it's basically Motorstorm PR with snow environments on the PSP.  Gonna order this tomorrow right now :rock

I've seen posts saying Tales Of Vs. works.

I tried converting Tenchu 3 Portable, and it worked!  Too bad after playing it, the controls are kinda wonky and I'd much rather play Tenchu 4 instead.   :lol

So I really don't have time to get into this Yoshiro complicated stuff, but can you just take an iso file, expand it, run the yoshiro thing, repack it, play it on 5.50GEN?  Also has anyone tested if these patched versions work on M33 5.00-6?  I'm kinda afraid to upgrade to 5.50 cause every so often I read somebody bricking theirs in the transition :X
