JRPGs on the 360
« on: September 25, 2009, 07:20:54 AM »
My brother-in-law is Japanese, and has a 360. I want to encourage him to enjoy it, but he has made the grave error of buying Last Remnant, which has robbed him of his will to power on the device. I want to buy him a game, but a quick glance at metacritic is not inspiring. Is there a good JRPG available, or is it all crap?

WTF is grave error about TLR? It's the best one on the system. In fact they're all good except Eternal Sonata.

edit: Woo almost caught myself. Except Eternal Sonata -AND- Star Ocean 4

I highly recommend Lost Odyssey. Probably the best all round jrpg on 360. Good balance of old school battle system and deep story

Yeah, I really enjoyed Lost Odyssey.  Eternal Sonata was OK for cheap if you just want 20-30 hours at most.  I just ordered TLR.

Tales of Vesperia and Lost Odyssey are the best X360 jrpg's. The rest is pretty underhwelming.

Mistwalker should kill off Blue Dragon and make a new LO game.

Lost Odyssey is good but loses steam, and it has those annoying kids.

Tales of Vesperia is pretty solid all the way throughout.  Although it does have an annoying kid... not as bad as LO, tho.  Why do jrpgs have to have annoying fucking kids?  Ugh, jrpgs always have the dumbest fucking cliches.

Now that I think about it, the last jrpg that I had like no complaints about and actually liked the whole cast of characters was probably Tales of the Abyss.  Jerk Luke ruled.

Tales of Vesperia is the best on the 360 so far, despite sharing the same metacritic score with the worst (Eternal Sonata).

Speaking of which, I wonder when the next 360 JRPG will be announced. Or perhaps I should say if the next 360 JRPG will be announced. I have this rational fear that Microsoft will stop pushing for JRPGs and so Japanese publishers will just stop porting/publishing them on the 360. That would suck not only because the western JRPG fanbase has gravitated to the 360 but also because it would likely mean even less HD RPGs then the slim pickings we already are getting.

Hell, are there even any 360 JRPGs upcoming other than FFXIII, tri-ace's new game and, ugh, Magna Carta

Yeah, it looks like your best hope for RPGs is for them to go multiplat... I don't really see any exclusives coming to the 360 any time soon, and I think MS has given up on Japan - no new Mistwalker or RPG announcements at TGS, nothing new announced in the genre since SO4. 360 might see some Idea Factory shovelware on occasion tho  :yuck

Tales of Vesperia's PS3 sales are the final nail in the 360 RPG coffin.

Looks like I'll try LO or Vesperia for him, and see how he reacts. I'm at a loss, because I'm not even sure what he likes. He played a lot of Metal Gear on PS2 and PSP, and as for RPGs I think I've seen him enjoy DQ like most Japanese males, and Final Fantasy Tactics which is basically our only point of gaming interest overlap. I loved FF:T on PS1. Other than that, like a lot of people here he gets motion sickness almost immediately when playing an FPS, or even a third-person shooter like Gears.

How bad is the loading on LO? I heard it was pretty heavy. I'm in a JRPG mood for the first time in years, but I can't tolerate JRPGs that take like 15 seconds to load every battle.

Blue Dragon and Tales of Vesperia probably fit that description the closest of all the 360 JRPGs. My recomendation would be Vesperia.

If it's installed to your hd, the loading is barely noticeable.  I don't know why people wouldn't install games to the hd, to be honest.

Well to be fair there are some games that get fucked up when you install them (I dont' believe Last Remnant is one of them though). I wish there was a list somewhere that had all the various HD install problems with games.

Good grief, I almost impulse-ordered The Last Remnant at play-asia because it's Happy Meal-priced at 878 yen right now. I thought to check this thread to jog my memory if it was one of the good ones, only to see my own damned post about it being the one that my bro-in-law hates. That would have been pretty bad.

I also note Japan Amazon has complete crap prices on Guitar Hero games (I need to replace my controller), and Play-Asia must not have realized they horribly overordered DJ Hero. Or maybe they didn't, this time.

Here's the changes for the PC version:

Quote
    * Enhanced graphical settings, such as increased LOD.
o Graphics settings are customisable to meet the capabilities of the player's PC.
    * New commands and new skills.
    * A Turbo Mode that increases battle speed.
    * Linking additional enemies together does not increase your Battle Rank further than having fought them separately.
    * Battle Rank is now visible from inside the Main Menu.
    * Items are now color-coded indicating their rarity, and categorised according to type.
    * Leader limits are no longer imposed, allowing full parties of nothing but (Unique) Leaders.
    * Arts can now be disabled, allowing the player to limit what arts a character uses in battle.
    * All Xbox 360 downloadable content is available, but requires specific ingame items to be unlocked.
    * Characters involved in quests are now specially marked on the minimap.
    * A "New Game Plus" option is now available upon finishing the game.
o The following are carried over to the new game: components, formations, gold, magazines, maps, Mr. Digg's status, and items that unlock arts for Rush.
    * Hard mode in which monsters are particularly more difficult than on Normal mode.
    * An Auto-Save function, making the game automatically save after each battle and each region change.
    * A warning message is now displayed if game progress is saved between subsequent boss fights.

class BALANCE, sir! i do not mind playing as a space marine with a gun any more than i mind playing as a spiky-haired doe-eyed figgurt, but when you let me choose my character's class, make sure that they are ALL equally viable, not JUST the psychic powerz class because the biotics special efects look effin' stupid yet are apparently necessary to really enjoy the game. :'(
