You know the origins in the original movie...

Anyways, i think it'll be entertaining at least. I still think the TCM remake was one of the better horror remakes to date.

It's mentioned briefly, but that's it.

Good casting choice for Freddy. That's about all I have to say. It's funny that Watchmen ended up being a vehicle for Jackie Earle Haley.

Meh, I'm so tired of origin stories in horror remakes.

I sure thought the actor was a great choice when I first heard about it. But eh, the voice is horrible...guess that's not his fault though. The mask sucks...everything about that trailer sucks in fact

The only way you'd make me be able to see this is if Johnny Depp starred in it and ended up being turned into a giant blood stain on his mattress.

It's not a good thing.

Well, it's got at least two good actors in it, so hey.

haha

The pic I posted was of a real-life burn victim (isn't Freddie a burn victim?  I'm not big on horror.)

I saw a burn victim on Oprah that was a dead ringer but I couldn't find her pic online.  She looks like a muppet when animated too.  I wonder if that's where Bay got the idea.

This will probably suck which is too bad since Freddy and the Nightmare series is one of the most interesting slasher franchises there is.

Remakes of The Goonies, Jaws and Labyrinth can't be far behind at this point.

The Goonies and Labyrinth don't have the brand strength to make a remake worth the financial gamble. Jaws makes so much money as a catalog title that it might be foolish to jeopardize that cash flow for a crappy reboot.

... my issue is why remake these horror films? They're all pretty good, and all of the Platinum Dunes remakes feel like they've been pumped out of a music video factory.

The original films looked visually raw (albeit mostly due to the low budget), whereas the remakes suffer from this slick sheen of polish that undermines the horror. I don't feel scared, I feel like I should be bracing for a wicked guitar solo.

It probably will.  Probably make for a decent rental to see Jackie Earle Haley as pre-crispy Krueger.  I guess I can see the logic behind these remakes (pop culture then is pop culture now) but I would prefer to see them as sequels rather than defecating on the memory of what the original style was with modern cinematography techniques and over-budgeted nonsense.

Also, where the fuck is Freddy vs. Jason part Deux  >:(

I'm stealing this line

Also dudes, how come the creators of these reboots feel the need to flesh out ridiculous origin stories for the villains. For we got what seemed like an hour of Lil Michael Myers, now I'm guessing we're gonna witness middle age Freddy's sad obsession, the woman that loves him begging for his life, and his brutal murder. I almost feel like shedding a tear - oh wait, he's a pedophile.

The 80s were content to give up a blip of origin and get to the killin

"alright, this dude kills his sister on Halloween. Then goes to a mental hospital and becomes a killer"
"this pedo gets burned alive and then haunts teen dreamz"
"this dude use to be an angel right, now he's a sadomasochistic genie in a box"
"lol check this out, this guy drowns in a lake and his mom goes crazy lol"

that's all the origin i need god dammit :punch

Older films were content to simply create evil characters; Michael Myers had no motivation in the original Halloween, he was just pure evil.

I think people were more inclined that a person could be "born" evil several decades ago, and not necessarily a product of their environment.

As the films progressed, all of them received more sympathetic origins (Myers' got a druid cult, Freddy's mom was raped a thousand times, Jason was not just neglected but also treated like shit, Pinhead used to be a nice dude, etc.) because our generation requires motivation to commit heinous acts.

It is not enough to be evil anymore, because we are raised to question why said person is evil. It's obviously their childhood or a traumatic event.

Right?

I always thought the genius of Freddy Krueger was the he was a violent, evil monster when he was alive - killing him just exacerbated the situation. Making him sympathetic undercuts the whole thing.

Now we're left with a bunch of horror icons with mommy/daddy issues and shitty childhoods.

Where have all the real boogeymen gone?

Eh, I think you'd have to include the Scream and Saw killers as legitimate icons of their time.
