IAP is the huge pain in the ass we have to tolerate because iOS has it totally locked down.

Holy shit guys, this is huge. Say in like 3 years time, the iPad will have iterated hugely, and with a controller, Microsoft and Somy will be seriously fucked console wise. iPad seems pretty easy to work with.

Endgame:death of pcs and consoles.

In what way? It's basically a graphical thing. Once the iPad reaches parity with the next wave of consoles, it'll be a serious worry for both companies. Nintendo is not in the picture, because its like the ugly autistic child of the family. Maybe Atari could be the mother, maybe science'y looking guys could have been the father. Ninty come up with works of brilliance (Virtual Boy, N64, GC, GBA, Cards) and works of shit (wii).

cm9 on touchpad is prone to random crashing, i get about 5 seconds into minecraft before it shits the bed, gameloft games won't even load, so i am hesitant to spend money on any of the few decent games available on android

Both are indeed "quality", but Avadon is like a dumbed down version of Avernum.  There is so much more to Avernum than Avadon.

$10? Need to adjust my pricing expectations :(

Motherfucker, there's at least 40 hours of gameplay you spoiled next-gen whiny ass tittybaby.  What other form of quality entertainment can you experience for the low, low cost of $.25 per hour?

I just started playing Avernum, and 2 hours went by in no time.

I'm sorry for complaing about the price, leper me please

Burnout Crash comes out tonight. I always kinda wanted this on xbla but when I found out an ios version was coming I decided to wait for it there.

A game called Crow which has gotten some buzz also comes out tonight.

And Infinity Blade 2 is getting the Clashmob update tonight.

I found a neat little game from the people who made Touch Detective on the app store called Deck Make Fantasy.

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/deckmake-fantasy/id419295241?mt=8

It's a card based rpg.  You build a deck of up to 20 cards.  Each card has an HP value that adds to your max HP, and has an effect in combat such as a physical or magical attack, extra defense for a turn, etc.  You fight in one on one fights against monsters to build up enough money to buy more cards from town and head to the next part of the map.  Getting enough cash to progress can sometimes be a bit of a grind, but I'm having fun with it.

Looks cool.

- Does it have a form of story, or ending?
- Is it riddled with IAP shit?

Zero IAP shit.  I wouldn't recommend it otherwise.  It has a simple barely there story.  It's mostly about building a deck of 20 cards to efficiently murder progressively harder things before they murder you.

I'm in the 4th (out of 5) "kingdom" at the moment.  I assume there is some kind of ending once I clear it.

I need some solid recommends

Here is what I already have:

Chaos Rings - Cleared first story, working on the second
Chaos Rings Omega
Chaos Rings II

Hills and Rivers Remain - completed, was challenging and unique
Crystal Defenders - I'm obsessed with perfect clears and it's hard as hell
Groove Coaster - ehhhhhh

Cave games are all awesome
Dodonpachi Resurrection
Dodonpachi Blissful Death
Bug Panic
Bug Princess
Bug Princess 2
Espgaluda II
Deathsmiles

GameDevStory - this is the only kairosoft game I'll ever need since they are pretty much all the same barring the theme.
Deckmake Fantasy - Having lots of fun with this one
Scar of the Doll - I'm interested in more visual novels of less dubious audiovisual quality

Crimson Gem Saga if you haven't played it, since its just the PSP game

Square Enix obviously

Guardian Saga because it's Dragon Quest :uguu

Dragon Fantasy because it's liek old-skool :uguu

Ash because it plays just like an old skool JRPG :uguu

Across Age DX because it's just like Zelda :uguu

Dark Incursion because it's just like Metroidvania (except its not) :uguu

Hunters 2 because its like Fire Emblem :uguu

Demi, I finally got to looking through all those.

I have most the good original SE stuff already (I already have the ports on superior platforms)
Crimson Gem Saga looks ok, but is it worth getting on IOS over PSP?
Gonna give Knight of the Phantom Castle a shot.

For the rest, virtual dpads are bullshit, (only Chaos rings and Bug Panic ever really got nailed that,) and a lot of these seem to either have that or have some faux anime art style that offends my delicate japafag sensibilities.  Are any of those actually good?  Or are they just attempting to make money by pulling the nostalgia card?

With that stuff in mind, do you have anything else you would recommend?

demi

  • cooler than willco
  • Administrator
Well it doesnt offer anything new over PSP. But if you prefer to use real controls over touch then get the PSP one.

Adventure Bar Story was also a PSP only game in Japan, so unfortunately that is your only way to play in English.

I would say the ones I posted are good. Why would a virtual d-pad be an issue in an RPG, like Guardian Saga?

Shantae is also on iOS, if you don't have a DSi to play it on (DSiWare only)

I recommend anything on my list. It's on you if you don't prefer the controls. I just weed out the good stuff from the Angry Birds bullshit people play. And Tower Defense. Fuck Tower Defense.

Be careful on which version you buy. Both are the same, except DX has Game Center support, and Retina graphics.

If you enjoy, or hate, Across Age, they are making a sequel.

Thanks I appreciate the recommendations.  The games I've tried that had virtual d pads have been pretty universally terrible (never ever play r-type ios).

Here's some more I have on my Want List on Appshopper:

Manhattan Requiem
(Jake Hunter is also available on iOS, but I didnt like the DS game so I dont care)

Ravenmark
RayForce (I hear this is doodoo)
Cavorite 2
Sorcerer of Fortune (there are 3 in this series)
Ghost Trick (DS port of course)
Shin Megami Tensei (just for kicks, this aint getting translated)
RPG Quest - Minimae
Kale in Dinoland
Darius Burst
Space Invaders Infinity Gene
Snowboard Kids (DS port)
Frogatto
Tower of the Sorcerer
Simon the Sorcerer 1 & 2
The War of Eustrath - http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/the-war-of-eustrath/id381058279?mt=8
BrainDead 13
Mage Gauntlet (you might like this one) - http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/mage-gauntlet/id460697573?mt=8
Legends of Yore
Dark Void Zero (DSiWare port)
Wizardry Labyrinth of Souls (same as PS3)
PicoPicoQuest
Broken Sword
fat

In the process of checking that new list out.

774 Deaths: http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/774-deaths/id501247581?mt=8 (aka "nanashi no game") apparently not

Lesseeeeee my current wishlist (for potential buys) consists of:

Chaos Rings II (turns out I DON'T have it yet, but I'm not done with the originals yet)
Froggatto
Mage Gauntlet
Darius Burst SP
774 Deaths
Space Invaders Infinity Gene (how do the controls compare to the cave games?)

Can't add them yet, but Million Arthur, Guardian Cross, and Dragnir are day one purchases if they come out here.

I think I'm gonna pick up The War of Eustrath (which looks like a ghetto super robot wars) and 774 Deaths

That's not Nanashi No Game. It's just some super meat boy "hard game" with the same graphics as Nanashi. Which is ok cause Nanashi No Game was doodoo.
fat

Oh whoops, I thought it was the same thing.

Mage Gauntlet is pretty smart about it's controls.  It works like Chaos Rings but without the visual indicator.  Ymmv on the last bit, but it feels ok to use.

Knights of the phantom tower is pretty neat.  Kinda iffy on the flick/tap recognition, but I think I need to get used to it.

The War of Eustrath is a pretty decent super robot wars ripoff.  Animations aren't up to par of course, but it looks like the gameplay is solid.  I hope it gets difficult.

Nice. I was gonna pick up Eustrath since I doubt it will drop in price, but I am trying to clean some of these other games off. Mage Gauntlet I can see a price drop happening since the developer is still active.

I bought my son Minecraft IOS for his birthday. He played the shit out of it while we were on vacation last week.

I'd like to get him the PC client. If anyone has an extra license to gift, it would be appreciated. I'll buy it for him when I get paid next week regardless.
