Damn, a Kairosoft game that actually looks interesting to me ... but it's only for Android (as of yet). Ugh.

Beastie Bay

Quote from: Review
After constructing a house for yourself and a pasture dwelling for your friend, you see a section of unexplored terrain nearby, a treasure chest taunting you from amidst its blue borders. With a simple tap you'll head out on your quest, a small bar at the bottom of the screen showing your progress as well as any events that lay in wait.

When you encounter an enemy during these outings, Beastie Bay game switches to battle mode where you'll choose attack options from a menu. The usual battery of skills, offensive moves, and item uses are available, all depending on which pets you brought with you, and fights feel very much like a round of Pokémon. Once the enemies are cleared and you reach the end of your journey, you gain a new chunk of land to colonize along with any treasures you picked up along the way.

Here's the twist: you're not just battling creatures, you're also capturing them. By tossing out a hunk of monster bait to a weakened enemy, you can often tame them and allow them to join your party. This ties directly into the non-battle portion of the game, as each new companion needs a place to live, so you have to find a suitable spot and settle them in as soon as possible. Pastures and houses eventually go towards gathering resources and attracting tourists, at which point the simulation part of the game kicks in, keeping you enamored until your phone's battery goes flat.

The problem is really that it's a huge PITA to get enough free space on my device to install that shit in the first place. Gameloft games are hella bloated and installing a 1.6gb game requires 3.2gb free space (at least). I gotta go through and clear out a lot of stuff to open that up. So I wanna make sure that a game's good if I'm gonna delete 3gb of horse porn to make room for it.

I want to buy just one Cave shooter for my iPhone. Leaning towards one of the cheaper ones since I'm not hardcore about them. Opinions?

Also, does anyone have Fantasy Chronicle? Looks like a neat little JRPG for 99 cents.

I think Espgaluda II or Bug Princess are good bang for your buck.  Nice aesthetic too.

I remember having a really great fuckin' time with the original Gameloft Spiderman game, of all things. You know, the toon-shaded one with the worst voice acting in recorded history.

I broke down and made a Japanese account and bought SD Gundam G Generation Touch. It's a free download "demo" that asks for 1,000 yen after the first stage to access the full game.

Doesn't sound like much of a demo.

...Come to think of it, I'm stunned that they offered any kind of demo at all. Most Japanese Gundam fans will buy anything that comes out with the Gundam name on it, even when they know it's bad. One of my co-workers told me, "Yeah, we willingly throw ourselves on these particular landmines."

Wow, they transformed it from a pay app to a free IAP game. The designers also apparently nerfed existing weapons in favor of IAP items.

Quote
The 1.1 update wrecks the fun of this game. They introduced IAP for gold and a new currency called Dragon Coins. The dragon coins are very tedious to acquire and you need LOADS of them for the worthwhile items. Your current/old items have been stat reduced. Your card skills have been weakened, the one I notice most is that wind card. Nearly all the new enemies (dragons, large slimes) take many hits to kill, they shrink a little til they die. The real problem with that is that, especially with the dragons, they aren't affected by any knock back effects. This is critical, the dragons fly around really fast and randomly spamming the play field and you can't one hit them or knock them back. Very very annoying. The new cards, slow and giant, are TERRIBLE. Slow lasts almost no time at all for what it does and giant lasts no time at all and doesn't even amplify the size of your other card skills. Spend 25 rupees to upgrade your giant card, which goes up .2 of a second per upgrade, and your other older upgraded cards go up 1,000 rupees in cost or more. Oh yeah, how about the fact that rupees and dragon coins will fly directly through you when they explode from the crates or monster kills instead of you receiving them when they fly at you and ought to be picked up. This leaves you running around for them cause they explode all over the place. To add insult to injury, the new sky level bottom bridges are great at allowing your hard to get dragon coins to fall through and be lost, all because you walked on said bridge to retrieve the coin and it moved while you walked on it. There is no way this is accidental behavior, it has to has been designed to eat your coins - like the metal claw game at your local arcade.

This is all a real shame, it was a fun game. Now it just feels like a chore to play! I understand they want a way to make money, hey cool more power to you guys, but you made an already challenging game obnoxiously hard.

That's annoying.

I didnt play the original to notice. It's been fine for me. And yes the iOS market can be very shady. Lots of developers get desperate when their app stagnates.

Yeah, it's getting to where you should always check before you update games nowadays.

Even if it were only a few bucks, I'd still be annoyed if I were one of the people who paid for the IAP-less version of the game.

Yea I saw that earlier ... I'm not too crazy about their take on classic RPGs. But with there being such a famine of those types of games on the IOS, I still might bite.  I would rather have Eschalon Book II (which I still haven't played yet).

I hate touch controls, but credit needs to be given where it's due- it's a better port than all the other home consoles post-Dreamcast.  Even has the original soundtrack.

Wrong, wrong, wrong.

Game is fantastic.

Maybe if you have some kind of nostalgia hard-on for it. But I don't. So it still controls like shit on the Ipad and the early 3D-era graphics aren't helping me overlook that.

I guarantee that 99% of the people who buy these console ports just buy it for the sake of it or for nostalgia, play it once for like 5 minutes, then never touch the game again.

TA, Carma1 controls and looks *exactly* like on the PC back in 1994. Yes, it may be nostalgia speaking, but the game is pretty much perfect on the iOS.

iOS GOTY for me until AB: SW come out.

Hah .. that GAF thread is sad as hell.

Been finishing up some old backlog games.

Battleheart - Great action RPG. Wish it had some post-game content or incentives to level up all your characters.

Finger shot RPG - Not much of an RPG. More like a SRPG where you flick the characters around on a playfield. Amusing, but could have used some more customization of the classes/characters.

Undercroft - Still haven't completely beat this one yet. It's hard as balls. For whatever reason when I play these old-school RPGS (like Grimrock or Etrian Oddysey) I reach a sticking point and ragequit for a few weeks.

Loststar Tactics is also free now and is not a bad game at all.

The Quest is a good game and will probably take the rest of your life to beat if you actually get all the expansions, but you can absolutely screw yourself if you don't know how to play it properly, it's very unforgiving.  I'd recommend using a guide to at least give you a good starting build and some general hints about distributing points and game progression.

If you want an RPG you can play in drib and drabs, Quest and Sorcery is a bit interesting. It's a freemium game, so I'm sure at some point there will be a shitty pay wall. But for now it scratches my bite sized itch.

Sword and Glory is a bit interesting. Plays like a roguelike (permadeath) meets Bushido Blade meets King of the Dragon Pass.

The artstyle is minimalistic and pretty cool, although those static portraits are putrid.

You start each game off at level one and through a series of choices mold the type of fighter you want. The fighting is pretty simple and rely on timing and risk/reward. So you never feel cheated. As you level up you can add additional stats or use money won in battle to enhance your village (which also provides additional stats). Once you die you lose it all, but your Epic Points carry over and can be used to buy improved weapons/armor/customization in later playthroughs. There is a pretty thorough amount of stat tracking as a bonus.

It's free.
