Who the fuck cares about co-op in a MARIO game unless you're fucking 7 years old or have a kid/sibling anyways? Single player all the way.

Saint Cornelius seems to care.

I personally don't care for co-op platforming. LBP was kinda fun, though. But I want to play a Mario game on my own.
That's why the released footage of NSMBwii doesn't look interesting at all.

It just doesn't look fun to play with others. I only see a generic 2D Mario game with added 3 players.
In LBP you can at least solve puzzles together and have player interaction.

Nintendo should've taken a different route with this game. The whole game and the graphics look very empty and boring to me.

I agree that puzzle based platformers are better suited for co-op, but NSMB wii would still be fun if only for messing around with others.

Trine is another good co-op platformer, btw.  I tried the PC version co-op once and it's works well.  Don't know when it's coming to 360 or PS3.

don't know about the PS3 version or if it's online co-op there.  PC version is local only and it's actually a pretty weird setup.  I output the image to both my monitor and TV, then I played on my PC as a friend played with the 360 controller on the TV.  I don't know if you can do two controllers since I didn't have two to try out.

lol, there's seems to be co-op. Just tried it out.
Turned the second controller on and pressed start. A second character appeared on the screen.
You can do local co-op up to 3 players. Pretty neat.

I think expecting lag free play from certain genres is an unrealistic expectation.  As I understand it, most of it is predicting where the player is going to be and acting on that until the packets arrive.  This doesn't work very well with fighting games but is doable for racers.

you're not making any sense. you solve puzzles together to get coins and you have player interaction via using other players as jumps/eating and spitting out other players/picking up and throwing other players. it's a mario game + more people. i see it more as a bonus. i do agree that LBP is more ambitious, but its platforming elements are not and will never touch mario levels.

One benefit to not doing an online co-op of your local co-op is that you don't have to hear endless bitching about how you screwed it up. (See Castle Crashers, Smash Brothers, etc)

So here's why Edge gave it a 7:

Quote
Though his plumbing skills are rarely tested, Mario has often shown himself to be an expert architect. The games in both 2D and 3D are exemplars of pinpoint platforming, worlds constructed to lock perfectly with the parabola of each jump, the traction and momentum of Italian shoes. But there's something else, too - a rare joie de vivre - found in Mario's effusive yelps, in the irrepressible jollity of the world and, most of all, in the constant, enthusiastic invention. To put it more colloquially, Mario at his best has magic. And it's missing from NSMB Wii.

There you have it.

This is like when Edge described FEAR 2 as having "class".  You know what it means even if they sound up their own ass.

If that nostalgia/whimsy/magic shit can be pulled as a reason to defend a game (see Epic Mickey thread on gaf) then the absence of it can be use to criticize.  It's stupid either way.

My biggest concern is that the game will be too short.  Like 3-4 hours short.

I think the whole thing about magic is valid though it is hard to describe.  NSMB on DS lacked this; it felt like a fan made effort through and through.  YI2 felt this way as well but it was outsourced so that explains that.  Although I'd pin that down on the music and level design, not magic or whimsy.

It's supposed to be 6-7 hours if you breeze through it (which is actually longer than the other 2D Mario games if you're doing the same thing). And I think 15-20 if you decide to get everything.

I don't have a problem with "magic."  Kind of a manchild word to use but we all know what it means.  It just means good level design.

It's supposed to be 6-7 hours if you breeze through it (which is actually longer than the other 2D Mario games if you're doing the same thing). And I think 15-20 if you decide to get everything.

Really?  That's pretty good then.  5-6 hours is what it would take for me to beat Mario 1-3 each without using warps.

I'll buy it, it is just a matter of when I decide to reWii.

I don't have a problem necessarily when people use the word 'magic', but it's when you try and press that person to be more specific and they can't explain that gets my gears grindin.

It's pretty easy for me to describe why a game would be 'magical'. It's when almost every aspect of the game is cohesive and matches up properly, level design, music, graphics, etc. If NSMB had better graphics and music, I think it would definitely be comparable to SMB3 and World for me. Of course, I'm one of the few that didn't mind the level design in NSMB.

For NSMB: Wii, it appears they've fixed those issues (graphics might still be of the same style, but it looks a helluva lot cleaner), and I trust Nintendo for the most part to deliver with the level design. So this game should rock.

If you're an average gamer dork giving your impressions of some game you played, it's fine if all you can say is "I dunno man, I'm just not feeling the magic".  A professional reviewer ought to be able to actually dig deeper and analyze things, not just lean on their repressed-English-major skills.

The magic bit isn't even the worst part of that paragraph, though.

So, breakdown of pros and cons (stolen from somebody's post in another forum):

Quote
+Mario is an expert architect
+Jumps in a perfect parabola
+Italian shoes give Mario perfect traction
-Mario's plumbing skills rarely tested
-Lacking in joie de vivre
-Mario's Yelps insufficiently effusive
-Jollity of the world feels repressed
-Not inventive or magical
-No Mii support.

edit: shit, I thought I could get away with this because the "other forum" wasn't GAF, but little did I know the person I stole the post from, stole it from GAF.  Serves me right!

I think "magic" more so covers a bunch of different things rather than simply 'good level design'

-surprises and unexpected happenings during the course of your game
-very subtle attention to detail
-innovation in gameplay mechanics
-etc.

I can usually tell why I like a game w/o resorting to 'magic' and I am one of the biggest nostalgia whores on EB.

"Magic" always seems like a cheap-cop out to me. As in I don't have the ability to verbalize what I think is good about a game so instead resort to the mystical and undefinable. The issue also maybe word limit where in that case a person has to use such a term because he doesn't have the actual space to define and delineate what is exactly "magical".

Sounds par for the course to me.  Game reviewers don't know how to write a review.  Shit, most of them don't even play the games they review.

I kinda thought that the hyped game journalist symposium was supposed to take care of these issues.  I guess not.
