Slim came out officially on the 1st. Some started selling it on the 25th of August, accounting for a good chunk of PS3 sales then.

This is the first full month where the PS3 could be considered to be priced at a competitive price point.

The bump was expected but doesn't indicate strong interest from the public. Going off the Top 10, except for Batman, the 360 versions of multiplatform games still outdid the PS3 versions. No strong sales surge to reflect the hardware sales either but there could be from #11 on down but that doesn't seem too likely. I'll stop here since we won't know the full list for a while but the sales were decent but nothing to really brag about. However, once the 11-20 numbers come out, I doubt the story is much different.

Maybe I'm just a dumb xfag but this bump appeared to be a typical price drop bump - not a sign of turning tides or a game changing month.

To be fair (and not to overstate it like some crazy people will do) the 360 may have a competitive price point issue if they try to stay at the same price point as the PS3. I bought my 360 way back when because it was cheaper than the PS3 and that is precisely why I bought it.

If someone were to ask me for advice on what they should buy right at this moment I would probably say a PS3 because they are both the same damn system with the samn damn games and one system has a blu-ray player in it. So you might as well buy the one with the free blu ray player if they are going to cost the same.

Based on completely anecdotal evidence, everyone I know who regularly buys the 360 version of games bought Batman on the PS3 for the exclusive DLC. I wouldn't be surprised if that was a swaying factor, coupled with Batman PS3 actually being more or less equivalent to the 360 version.

Yeah, the chances of this being a sign of changing times is fairly slim (ha! okay, sorry...). Even the gamecube got a pretty decent spike when it dropped in price.

Though to be totally fair, you never know. PSP started kicking all sorts of ass last year in Japan when it got a price drop (and I think it was due to that PSP Go or whatever it's called).

Music games are dying due to oversaturation, but I can't complain since I won an easy $10 off TheGreatDave.

I don't get the appeal of the exclusive Batman DLC to be honest, but I guess I'm in the minority on this one. Then again I never got the whole Link in Soul Calibur 2 thing either.

What are the big hits for the rest of the year? Modern Warfare 2? Are there any big 360 exclusives past Halo?
Seeing Madden and Batman shows less of a 360-favoritism. (I'm guessing Batman was just lucky to be alongside the pricedrop)
Looks like it's just Forza and L4D2.

Although Halo does always seem to have legs.

As someone that sold games for a living, XBL most certainly matters to the mainstream. Its far more easier and intuitive, and it offers stuff like Netflix and (soon) Facebook and Twitter. It's a big deal.

The PS3 has a lot of the same third-party support, but even that is inferior to what the 360 offers (game builds are often smoother, better looking, have larger communities), and Uncharted 2 is the system's first legitimately great first-party title. Microsoft already had Gears and Halo to lean on by this point, and regardless if it's on the PS3, Call of Duty is synonymous with Microsoft's platform as well.

That's what I was thinking; the PS3 almost outsold the 360 2:1 yet the software sales (outside of AA's numbers) didn't reflect this at all. The only explanation is:

That's what I think too. Kind of like there was a bump when Blu-Ray won the format wars in early 2008. There appears to be quite a bit of people wanting it just for the player. Software sales just don't show a big surge in demand for PS3 software, which means things will return to the previous performances soon, plus maybe 20,000 or 30,000 a month increase since it is cheaper.

What's the question mark? Metal Gear Solid 4 was pretty crummy, and Little Big Planet is appealing to a hardcore niche. Uncharted was pretty mediocre, but Naughty Dog brung it with the sequel.

Sony has a legitimate first-party title that can break into the mainstream.

We shall see. I'm on the fence on what will be a big factor outside of price. It is not unexpected for the Ps3 to bolt ahead on the introduction of a new model and pricecut for that month. However I've been hearing that the PS3 is also selling pretty well this month. And if it can outsell the 360 in Nov and Dec that would be pretty impressive. That is a big if though.

I haven't been wowed by much of anything Sony's first party has been producing this gen outside of Uncharted and Motorstorm 2, but it's not as if MS has been knocking them out of the ballpark either. I've found a lot of the multiplatform stuff to be much more entertaining.

Pretty much this. The games I've had the most fun with so far this gen are Fallout 3 and Saint's Row 2, and while the 360 version of Fallout is definitely superior, you CAN play both games on either system. I keep wishing that MS and Sony would quit flirting, get to fucking and birth gamers a system for next gen that can play all the games.*

*Obviously, Nintendo doesn't count as they don't make games.

Pretty much all the best games this gen are multiplat, but I feel that the ps3 exclusives are definitely more interesting these days. That said, both systems offer enough to own both imo.

Yeah, I pretty much agree that the third-party stuff has been better than the first-part stuff, but Microsoft has capitalized on Halo's brand strength and scored a major coup with Gears of War (regardless of whether or not you think it's great).

The real story is that Microsoft created a far superior online platform for its console, and that has allowed it to take a commanding lead in the States. That, and all the colossal fuck ups by Sony.

How is Motorstorm 2 compared to the first? Was it a major improvement, or just more of the same? I thought MS1 was kinda terrible, but if the second is a lot better or something I might pick it up this holiday. I've kinda ignored MS2 this entire time.

If you weren't a fan of the core racing, then you might not like Motorstorm 2 that much. But MS2 is a huge improvement in terms of variety and a bunch of other words that are used to describe how it's a much better game with the same basic racing.

IMO, Motorstorm 2 is one of the best racing games out there and this is coming from someone that didn't really care for the first one. The core gameplay hasn't been dramatically changed but they tweaked enough to where everything just feels right and the tracks are more interesting this time around, not to mention the loading has been dramatically shortened. You should definitely give it a shot if you haven't played it yet and like those sort of games.

What about the online titles like Pixel Junk Eden or Wipeout? I think Sony does pretty well exclusive wise.

I love me a good (arcade) racer, so I'll probably give it a shot. Should be relatively cheap by the time I get it anyway.
