WoW intro cinematics were pretty cool.

Frostgorge Sound is great if you like snowy areas. Timberline Falls as well.

Frostgorge is a huge area. First time I went there was with CrystalGemini. We did a few events in the first area and then started heading north to explore and gather ingredients. The monsters started outlevel us a bit, but we took a path across the roof of this icy cavern full of raspberry bushes and mountain goats. When we reached the end of the cavern, giant stalactites fell from the sky on top of us. and then the Claw of Jormag dragon arrived and landed in front of us. Petty awesome experience.

Well they sped everything up so I guess they increased all mana regens etc too. Maybe upped dps or something. Who knows.

I agree they should just have some different servers with different rulesets at this point. Some Vanilla server with no cross server shit and I might play it again.

There's no need to use food & drink while leveling. If it has a buff of some sort then its useful, but otherwise there's no reason to. Downtime for food & drink was just an artificial time extender and was smartly removed as the game became more refined.

It's like you haven't raided, ever. There is ALWAYS downtime, you don't need to sit your character down for 40 seconds and have him drink something. There was a time when eating was rather important to get that extra buff or whatever. Last time I raided (Cata) it didn't seem important.

I've raided hundreds of times if not more, and nearly every one had substantial downtime. Whether it was waiting on the Guy With Crying Baby or waiting on Resto Shaman Finishing Up Battleground, there was always downtime. Some of it was good. As a tank, it gave me extra time to study a boss fight or strategize with the OT or healers. But most of the time downtime was a waste of time that bred resentment, disinterest, or drama. A good deal of my downtime was spent trying to put out fires

dps dude: why is he always going AFK...why can't his wife handle the kid
me: he's one of our best raiders, this isn't his fault. chill...
healer dude: hey I see you guys are in Dalaran...has the raid started? maybe I can join?
me: we're waiting for Guy With Crying Baby. sorry there's no room for you
healer dude: well when can we create a second raid group?
me: you'll have to ask the guild leader...

Towards the end of my raid days, I was the one starting fires. Downtime is a waste of time and leads to the end of people's interest in raiding.

You can take a break from combat whenever you want. A game forcing you to take a break to artificially extend time is just part of the sub-based monetary scheme.

Also, people didn't generally chat all friendly like in WoW. It's got a bad community only outdone by MOBAs, which btw, are full of former wow players. =/ You can argue you got to know people before LFD because you had to communicate within your server and know good players to get a good run, but to say stopping to click a milk and bread icon ever provided a social atmosphere in the game is a joke.

Phoenix Dark

  • I got no game it's just some bitches understand my story

Besides there are so many open chats in WoW that you can socialize while doing anything. At one point I had a finger on my server's general pulse. I knew who the trolls were, who the best players were, what guild was struggling/about to break up, what the general pvp atmosphere was looking like, etc; hell I even had a basic understanding of what the opposing faction were up to.

By the end the chat had become so bloated with bullshit, spam, and kids acting like dicks that there was absolutely no server identity.

I think that all food has a buff now. Could be wrong about that.

It seems to me like raiding isn't very fun and the downtime made this clear by having people express their feelings...

And no I already said I never done a raid, brah.

But anyways. You didn't mention how long the downtime was. Obviously if it's too long it will suck.

Downtime is however long it takes the raid leaders to figure out what went wrong and how to fix it. Varies greatly and usually involves discussion between classes / roles about what to do to improve. It doesn't generally revolve around drinking / rebuffing, but I guess that's a small part of it.

The drinking/rebuff was always the most annoying part, especially if once the break ended, everyone needed to be rebuffed again. Changing all the buffs to being raid-wide and 30-60 minutes long helped improve this a lot.

I'm eager to try out raiding, and from what I'm hearing it sounds awful.

This is perfect Ruzbeh logic.

I rarely spoke in my mic during raids, but I'd constantly be talking to myself - mainly cursing, laughing, etc. One time, during a particularly annoying raid, my brother came into my room and said "lol you must really hate that game. Every time you play or talk about it, you're upset." The more I think back on WoW, the more I realize he was somewhat correct. Raiding can certainly be a glorious, entertaining, very fun thing. But it can also be one of the most frustrating, annoying things you can do online.

Some of my favorite gaming moments EVER occurred during raids, be they actual game events or achievements. The first time I did Naxx blew my mind. I still remember doing Patchwerk with about 4 tanks, and all of them dying except the MT and me; I had shitty gear but was good enough to survive, and basically made a name for myself during that raid. Or later when I became my guild's defacto main tank. I can't forget Ulduar, especially the hard modes, and how we spent months doing it and having fun.

But I also remember countless arguments, guild drama, people being jealous of loot drops, downtime, etc. A lot of guild members were people who worked late, or worked mornings. Imagine working all day or night, with your sole motivating thought being "I can play WoW when I get home" lol...then once you get home you can't do anything because the raid was cancelled, or the raid was delayed due to someone being AFK, etc. I witnessed more than a few players like that completely explode, rage quit, etc all over a video game that took over their life.

TLDR Ruzbeh: You should raid, it's easier now due to LFR. But downtime sucks and isn't nearly as glamorous as you'd think. A good raid can be some of the most fun you'll ever have gaming. Or at least, it was back in the day. Now...who knows.

The MMO market changed quite a lot from the time they began working on this. They probably saw that their monitzing wouldn't work and that their gameplay wouldn't pass the test.

Basically, GW2/LOL/F2P is the Titan Quest in this scenario.

Blizzard revolutionizes raiding:
http://us.battle.net/wow/en/blog/10175200/

Quote
To fill this void, we’re in the process of developing a new Flexible Raid system, which includes a new difficulty that sits between Raid Finder and Normal difficulty, while still allowing friends, family, or pick-up groups to play together. This difficulty will be available for premade groups of 10–25 players, including any number in between. That means whether you have 11, 14, or 23 friends available for a Raid, they’ll all be able to participate.

The Flexible Raid system is designed so that the challenge level will scale depending on how many players you have in the Raid. So if you switch between 14 players one week and 22 the next, the difficulty will adjust automatically. Keep in mind that unlike Raid Finder, no matchmaking is available, so you’ll need to make sure you invite people to attend—but if some can’t make it, it’s not the end of the world (or the Raid). You’ll also still be able to invite Real ID or Battle.net friends cross-realm. Who you choose to bring and what Item Level gear they’ll need to join your merry band is up to you, too—there’s no Item Level requirement for this Raid difficulty.

Tried the Firefall beta this morning; even on lowest settings, my PC isn't capable of running it at more than 2~3 fps in the tutorial area. There was a message which said it wasn't meeting the minimum spec, but it let me try to run it anyway. It has been a while since I saw a crawling slideshow of this magnitude.   :'( :'( :'(

I made it through the tutorial bunker, but when it landed me in the first actual playable area, I got less than 1fps, and couldn't navigate.

This is the last weekend of the Closed Beta; I will try to upgrade my machine for the Open Beta, since I'm still interested in the game.

Gave Rift another look since its F2P.

The new areas look way better than the old areas, both in oomph and in art. One of my issues I had with Rift before was the mostly uninspired world-feel. It felt like a lot of basic vidyagame and MMO areas with a touch of sci-fi that didn't really add up to any grand world building. I think I liked two zones in the whole game. The first part of the new area easily blew away the old world design.

Unfortunately, the gameplay feels aged to me now. I did most of the intro quests for the expansion, but got bored and hopped right through the portal gate to check out the new area. I then found the first Rift in the new area I could find to test out the changes to my class/spec. There were less buttons and CDs to monitor, and it was pretty easy for me to tank the entire group of mobs by my lonesome. It just felt weird to be back to keeping up a rotation and having passive stats do all the work.

I think I need to find out how I get access to the Dimensions feature and start building a home. Also, XP gain was realy slow. I did five or so quests, plus grinding that Rift, and only gained like 1-2% towards my next level. Not in the mood for that sort of grind.

You know what my idea for an MMO would be?  I call the game "sexism".  It will be a men vs women MMO.

You create forts etc to dominate areas and when the women come en masse, the guards yell "the women are coming" and you wage war for example.

Men and Women get sexist classes.  Women get Feminazi and the men get Misogynist for example.

In an in-game chat, Chris Whiteside of ArenaNet hinted at a raid-like feature coming to GW2.

Quote
(Q:) Will we be getting more dungeons?

(A:) We will be continuing to work on our dungeons.

(Q:) (Follow-up) Old ones...or new ones?

(A:) Both! ;)

(Q:) Will we ever see anything like raiding?

(A:) Our answer to raiding may very well be in the works!

(Q:) (In whisper) Can you say anything at all about raid style content?

(A:) It is something I am very excited about and will be unique to GW2

Not sure what to make of that. ArenaNet likes to do everything their own way, so whatever their "answer to raids" may be, I know it's not going to be a raid like we're used to. Not sure if that will please people or piss them off. I'm perfectly fine if they release a new ultra-challenging five man dungeon with unique items and skins.  I haven't been craving for a raid since leaving them.

I spent some time in Rift's Dimensions late last night and started enjoying myself. When I first logged in, Loyalty points were bugged and I had no Loyalty points showing up. It was fixed by tonight and I received a free Dimension key (100 plat cost normally), and some free dimension items. At first I just started emptying out whatever I had and placing it in my adobe hut house, but then I started to really think about what you can do with the objects. You can manipulate each object in physical space, so I took lighted urns and flipped them upside down, then raised them to the ceiling and now they're light fixtures. You can also resize items, so I took my pots and lined them up in ascending size. You also get a couple planks of wood and a stone tile that I turned into a sign post. Can't write on it though. =/

I then gave myself a project to build a dock on the pond outside my home. I bought 65 planks of wood and a barrel of rice. It took some time, but placing each plank one by one I was able to build a small dock that could hold the barrel of rice. I could create platforming areas just with the wood planks and stone tiles. There's nicer looking versions, but I'm going with the cheap stuff for now. I plan to use the stone tiles to create a staircase around the back of my house up to a rooftop area that I'll be using the planks and stone tiles to build as well.

There is an item limit for a dimension and you have to pay in game currency to increase it. From the looks of it, I might have to increase my item limit to finish the stairs and veranda, but I'm going to try the size modifying tool to see if I can stretch the tiles out so I can use less of them up top. If so then I might buy the nicer looking tiles to skin over the area with.

Yet another Living Story update for Guild Wars 2. This time it's SKY PIRATES :rock

The transition from Dragon Bash to Sky Pirates makes a lot more sense than the previous Living Story updates. The whole Living Story thing has been an experiment of sorts and it's gone from too fast, to too slow, to just about right in pacing at this time. It helps that they introduced an instanced story in a film noir style with hardboiled dialogue and a gumshoe detective character that's much more interesting than many of the human characters they've trotted out before. The links between events before were tenuous and felt made-up as they went along at times. The Dragon Bash festival having a murder and terrorist attack, thus leading to the unveiling of the Aetherblade sky pirates and a detective story works much better than some character about a fifth of the playerbase knows about showing up in Southsun. (Like they did for Flame & Frost and Southsun.) They also need to have some more follow-ups with the past stories.

They are also adding yet another temporary dungeon. I am not sure how I feel about dungeons being temporary, but it seems they plan to splice these temp dungeons up and turn them into future Fractal dungeons. The drawback to that is that Fractals are random in order, so if you just want to redo or check out the remodel of the dungeon then you have to keep doing Fractals until you get it to pop.

I just put in some command to change my zoom to go way out in WoW. Don't remember it though!

https://www.guildwars2.com/en/the-game/releases/july-09-2013/

I was hoping this update would lead to introducing the Tengu race. Kind of curious as to what else this floating trade bazaar has in store. I'm most interested in this:

Quote
In the upcoming Guild Wars 2 update, Bazaar of the Four Winds which will launch on July 9, players will be able to take part in Mario Kart-like races across a cliff in a floating city.

And they officially commit to the two week update plan:

Quote
Back in February, ArenaNet announced that it was introducing the Living World feature — a series of content that would add new story threads, characters, plot twists and gameplay to the existing MMO story arc. Speaking to Polygon, Whiteside said the studio is now releasing brand new content as part of Living World every two weeks, and in order to achieve that the studio has been restructured.
http://www.polygon.com/2013/7/2/4483984/how-arenanet-is-making-guild-wars-2-a-living-world

Still a lot of concern as to how this will work out for them. People want more permanent content and they say they will increase the amount of permanent content.

Picked up The Secret World finally. Trudging through the opening parts I did way back in beta. Combat doesn't feel much improved, but maybe a slight bit better. Having a lot of framerate issues for some reason. They should improve the mouth-flap on their cutscenes. The Voice Acting and writing is perfectly fine, but the mouth-flap throws it off in-game.

http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/07/05/blizzard-exploring-microtransactions-in-world-of-warcraft/

Quote
Microtransactions are nothing new for World of Warcraft, but the game has never had an actual in-game store. You've had pets and mounts that toe the line, but the line still existed. Then a bit of datamining turned up an experience boosting item that looked as if it might be tied to an in-game store. But datamining isn't the same as actual confirmation, and thus much nervous hand-wringing ensued... until community representative Zarhym confirmed that yep, this is a thing that is happening.

Zarhym's posts specifically state that Blizzard is "exploring the possibility" rather than definitely adding a microtransaction store, but it seems the most likely outcome.

This blew my mind in a way. You don't understand unless you've done the Meta Boss chain, but these are screenshots of the Jormag's Claw dragon fight. I've done this many times, and it always seemed like there was a lot of people, but you only saw maybe 20 at a time and the rest were culled. People have been crying out for culling to be fixed, and they did it in WvWvW, but they said it was much tougher to do in PVE.

Well, it seems they may be testing PvE culling at the Jormag's Claw fight. These two screenshots are of everyone in front of the player and everyone behind the player.

"nobody but 4 million people and you care about gw2"

deal with it

So ArenaNet has answered complaints about temp content being too heavy by having an in game election for the next member of the Lion's Arch Council decided by the playerbase. It initially appears, whoever wins the in-game election decided by players will reward the playerbase with a reduction in costs to travel or gem store items, which permanent mini-games get added, and which temporary dungeons comes back first depending on who the players support in-game. It's Ellen Kiel or Evon Gnashblade, two NPCs from the recent Living Story segments.

http://www.mmo-champion.com/content/3306-New-Stuff-Coming-to-the-Pet-Store!

Blizzard is adding transmog Helms to their cash store. Considering this and the news that they're working on an in-game shop, it seems pretty clear where they're going. Where they are eventually going that is.

I find WoW fans struggling with this interesting. I think a lot of folks were still under the illusion that Blizz and a sub MMO was somehow a sanctified way of monetization and that cash shops are part of bad/evil MMOs. Basically, the userbase was stuck in the past. I don't have a problem with cosmetic items and XP boosters, but I know WoW fans have convinced themselves that any cash shop is P2W. So there's this weird combo of rage and reconciliation going on.

The only problem is that Blizz is triple dipping on this in its current state. Box price + Sub + Cash shop. The Secret World did the same thing at launch and a lot of people disliked it and avoided it for that reason alone. Blizz is setting up for a F2P transition and kind of easing their diehards into it, but in the meantime it feels like they're trying to bleed every penny out of them.
