college students: does anyone actually LIKE philosophy?
« on: December 14, 2006, 12:01:33 AM »
I had a discussion with my friend recently about whether she should take a developmental psych class or intro to philosophy. I told her psych, not only because I'm a psych major and biased toward it, but because intro to philosophy made me want to stab myself in the throat.

Thoughts?

Women seem to really dislike philosophy. 90% of the majors are male.

I enjoy ethical, political, and legal philosophy for the most part. I also like logic and analytical philosophy. However I really hate reading things like what Aristotle thinks about the senses or how some post-modernist thinks language is a prison house or schizophrenia doesn't exist. I could not roll my eyes hard enough. Most texts are also a pain to read, sentences run on for ever and paragraphs stretch on for pages. Also most philosopher's seem to always need to create a whole list of new terms, which they rarely bother to explain.

Yeah, I like philosophy a lot.  I almost majored in it, but I wasn't interested in any of the primary careers that path leads to.  If I could go back and do things again, I probably would be interested, knowing what I know now.

The run-on sentences and neverending paragraphs make my heart sad. These men were supposed to be brilliant, but evidently couldn't correctly construct their thoughts.

About the male thing, I never thought of it, but I don't think there are any female philosophy faculty members at my school and I've never met a female philosophy major.

Philosphy was the greatest class I took in college.  A few years ago, I even bought a bunch of Philosophy college books off the internet just to read them.  My brother is a Philosphy major and we spend hours talking about it sometimes.

Language has always seemed like it enables far more thought then it could possibly restrict. If anything the superfluous nature of our language allows are thoughts to be carried away into an endless stream of metaphysical nonsense.

I majored in it. The key is getting past the kids who show up for "deep thinking". Once you realize most philosophy is little more than thought exercise, it's an enormous playground. You do have to carry a great deal of relativism and ability to work with nonsense, abstract thought with you.

Oh, I didn't mean the exact statement you said.  I more generally meant the philosophy of language and signs.  I don't specifically believe the "language is a prison" stuff.  I like semiotics stuff and things that are nearly fringe sociology.

Also, all you haters:  You ever take an intro to logic course?  I guarantee you will learn quite a few things that will serve you well.

My philosophy class was pretty awesome, but anyone who majors in it is wasting money.

Our teacher was kickass. We watched The Matrix and Office Space to illistrate certain philosophical ideas (such as the idea of "nothing" and whether it truly exists). We read this amazing book called the Tao of Pooh. Awesome class.

The teacher was pretty young so maybe that's why it rocked so much

Not really.  Philosophy degrees are good for legal shit.  It's one of the preferred degrees when applying for the FBI.

It's a good "base" degree.  Law schools like em, medical schools like em (as long as you've taken the pre-med courses), and any academic discipline likes em.

Are you talking about an intro informal logic course or an intro formal logic course. I see the value in the former, but the latter will have little practical value for most people. The informal logic class I took three years ago was one of the most valuable classes I have ever taken.

Yeah, informal logic.  Learning the arguments and fallacies is incredibly useful when speaking and writing;  particularly when it comes to learning how to use fallacies more effectively since it's an easy way to convince people of your pov, or get what you want.  But I'm sure that most intro to logic classes contain a bit of both formal and informal.  I know mine did.

Sociology was created by a philosopher named August Comte. The first book with sociology in the title was also written by a philosopher, Herbert Spencer.

My sociology class wasn't bad either. We watched the scene in the Godfather where Michael gets a new wife to illistrate how marriage/courting is dealt with in other cultures; sadly we didn't get to see how Italians deal with their problems, as seen throughout the rest of The Godfather.

On the flipside we watched The Coalminer's Daughter during our discussion of bad courting practices and borderline pedophilia. Quite interesting.

I also wound up having a formal debate on videogame violence and its impact on people, which went very well. I later put an edited version of my A paper on the site I used to write for:
http://www.gamebunker.com/install/pages.php?id=71

All my pictures are gone, and some of the editing is wierd. Our editor got fired shortly after he fucked up our site because his girlfriend dumped him. What a bastard

Seeing as how I used the  :-\ smiley face I wasn't really being serious. Nevertheless I do find it slightly ironic that your girlfriend dislikes philosophy when it gave rise to so many fields of study, from the natural sciences  to the social sciences she prefers. Many philosophical ideas are antiquated, but they are nevertheless part of our intellectual heritage. It is also very difficult to avoid philosophical ideas that are contained in fields like law, politics or ethics. So a blanket condemnation on philosophy seems unwarranted.

It was a college I went to. Basically I had to take introductory Sociology and philosophy classes, so they were pretty easy. I did wind up taking a higher sociology class and it was even easier. The subject just comes natural to me, allowing me to bullshit through the class without studying and still get an A. Ah those were the days.

Soft sciences. Nothing more than GPA filling for any student with half a brain and basic reading skills.

no, at nikki. The people that used to drop Intro to Philosophy courses either A) hated all the abstract language and high-falutin' terms -- or the insistence that you, y'know, DEFEND your arguments; or B) were actively distressed and angered by the notion of moral relativism when it came up.

I think the problem is not community colleges but more of a problem with sociology and philosophy. I found both subjects to be quite easy. They aren't called soft sciences for a reason you know. It's sort of like calling something "harmless death". Well it wouldn't be death if it wasn't harmless, therefore it's not death in the first place. Science is hard, not soft. But I suppose someone will respond by telling me how stupid my analogy is (it's pretty dumb). But you can correct all the analogies you want when you're stocking books at Borders I suppose.

I'm so glad I'm out of community college

PD, you're treading your well-worn path into the Ignorance Zone (tm YOU) again.
Agreed. I think trying to read Kant or trying to do proofs in predicate logic is just a little more difficult than your business classes PD. Though philosophy is in the humanities and not the social sciences.

Dude, what kind of school do you go to?  When you go to music class, do they show Amadeus?  Inherit the Wind for any legal courses?

It was a college I went to. Basically I had to take introductory Sociology and philosophy classes, so they were pretty easy. I did wind up taking a higher sociology class and it was even easier. The subject just comes natural to me, allowing me to bullshit through the class without studying and still get an A. Ah those were the days.

Soft sciences. Nothing more than GPA filling for any student with half a brain and basic reading skills.
US community colleges sound like a joke. The sociology and psychology courses I took at a Canadian equivalent of a US community college used regular university text books and we didn't spend class watching movies.

West coast CCs are usually pretty good. . .some of them are really good, but anywhere else in the country is a toss-up.

And, yeah, PD, read some Wittgenstein and tell me what's easy again.

Yeah the Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus wasn't an easy read.
Oh yeah I'm taking philosophy of language, something you would like, next semester.

I'd rather have fun here.

Upper level Philosophy seems more tedius than "hard" to me. Give me a book and tell me to write a paper and I can do it, no matter what.
