I totally get that that's what David is trying to do, but the whole self-importance thing is just too much for me.

it's definitely a show for neurotic, over-analytical introverts, because it's basically our lives with only mild exaggeration.

And this is why I love it.

Anyway, I'd replace F&G with Curb, and it'd pretty much be my personal top ten. Well, out of the shows I've seen. 11-30 is where it seems to get sketchy.

Because it was entirely random. I like punk now! I like disco now! I like the Grateful Dead now! I like Dungeons and Dragons now! Cindy is a Randroid now! Hey, Vice President Bush is visiting the school now!

Are you referring to how the freaks, most of whom were in a rock band, randomly changed their musical tastes? I would say it's not, especially when their music is part of their in-group identity and they all moved to dying or dead musical genres.

Also, it's entirely implausible for anyone with an IQ over 85 to have become a Deadhead in the 60s, let alone 80s!

What's-his-name got into disco to impress a girl while also try to make Lindsay jealous. That's a totally plausible course of action for a teenager.

The D&D part of the show was pretty accurate for a High school Role Playing session.

Speaking of which, how did that session come about? It only came about because Daniel was forced to join the AV club as punishment for attempting to a pull a fire alarm. That sounds like a realistic punishment and not a contrived plot device to get Daniel together with the Geeks.

Nah, terrible character.  Everyone else in the show carries Chuck's whiny ass.  i feel the same about Burn Notice that I do Chuck, good, but not great with better side characters than the main one.  Dexter and House get a pass for the formulaic nature of their shows because the main characters are so awesome.

Really? I think Michael is pretty fuck-awesome on Burn Notice.

As much as I love Dexter, I always get the feeling that it's not as good a show as it might seem and they don't take his psycho/sociopathy far enough. Also, every second spent not with Dexter is almost painful - worst cast of any good show I can think of. Thankfully, the show is called Dexter, so his awesomeness goes a long way.

House should've made the list if only because it pushed traditional procedural drama so far, also most of it's supporting cast actually became pretty great characters - even seemingly lameos like Chase and Cameron.

I like Chuck quite a bit and I completely agree about his character.

Also, I thought the Daniel being put in AV Club thing totally didn't feel realistic, and was one of the few moments in the series that felt contrived to me.

I disagree. He didn't start "liking" disco because he wanted to make Lindsay jealous, I think he finally got over and actually liked this girl and she introduced HIM to disco.

Also, wasn't punk just starting to get really popular around that time period? I thought it was pretty natural, because Daniel was trying to find out who he really was or what he enjoys.

Buffy's best years were in the 90s, not the aughts. In hindsight, I feel comfortable in saying that the show got really lame once she went to college.

I think while the average/overall quality was definitely higher in the early seasons, much of the really interesting stuff came in the later years (and I don't just mean the handful of famous high concept Whedon episodes) and the show as a whole as a phenomenon or whatever would've been a lot less interesting without the later years.

That may be, but high school Buffy is still the best.

I agree, shit like Wonder Showzen and Tim and Eric don't belong on there, and the total lack of It's Always Sunny is a travesty. I'd also include Chuck.

I think what we can all agree on is that this was the best decade for television programming since ever.

Wonder Showzen 100% deserves the nod. I adore T&E, but I'm never sure how 'good' it is.

This is probably one of the few "lists" where I've seen and am familiar with 90-95% of the content.

I can't really abide seeing The Wire at #1 though.  I would easily rate Deadwood, The Shield, and Mad Men well above it -- and Sopranos too if we are allowed to count the first few seasons that were produced in the 90's.

Watching Season 5 Episode 6 right now actually :)  I'm liking it a good deal more than S4 really.  The subplots aren't completely out of control, and all the major players are back in action in a substantial way except for Daniels sadly.  I still don't really care for Marlowe, and Omar continues to feel a bit tacked on.

Seconded.

Also, I'd have the Venture Brothers higher.  I'd put the two-part S1 finale and S2 up against any stretch of any other show.

I dunno; I think S5 fell a little flat (although the finale is practically flawless), but I don't want to say too much if you're only halfway through. S4 was clearly not planned from the beginning of the series, but I thought that they did a great job, all things considered. Marlo is totally dull, though, I agree.

I do think it's more consistent than The Sopranos and Deadwood, but I haven't finished The Shield yet.

TVC and I and some other people wasted a lot of time overanalyzing why it sucks a couple years back, here and at GAF.

Short version:  If it's a drama, then it sucks because the plot meanders all the time.  If it's a comedy it sucks because it's not funny.  Some of the actors (E and Vince) are outright terrible.  80% of the celebrity cameos add nothing.

Ari's the only character you can count on.  When he's not around, it veers into lifestyle porn and hideously boring relationship plotlines.

Not to say it doesn't have its moments, or that it's unwatchable.  But no way does it get a high spot in the canon.
