Also, black people and secondary characters don't go to heaven. Somehow Keamy was killed both in real-life and in purgatory.

LOOOOOOOOOOOOOCKE!!!!!!!!!!!

See, this would be a cool scene if it had, y'know, any elements of drama or tension. And if it wasn't cheesy and overblown. Eel hit the nail on the head, he calls him Locke, even though in the scene prior he berates him for talking to him as if he were Locke. This show is stupid.

It's been over an hour and I'm still kinda reeling from the catharsis. An expertly done finale, and a historic piece of television. Amazing.

Yeah, you're going to have to wait a week or two until the fan community settles down. They can't cope with mediocrity, let only a terrible finale. Let it sink in. It took years for some people to recognize how bad The Phantom Menace was.

oh well. you didn't like it. i'm not gonna sit here and say it was amazing and perfect. far from it. but it was the best finale to Lost that we where going to get. as someone else said ITT, series finales always suck.

and you guys may want to deny it but the truth is Lost is a fairly important show and it's ending is fairly "historic" in TV media terms.

It took years for some people to recognize how bad The Phantom Menace was.

So this is Lost in a nutshell (?):

- Originally a story about a group of people stuck on an island with no way to get out. They encounter nonsensical and outright fantastical freaky shit like smoke monsters and polar bears in a forest.

- They unlock a hatch which reveals that they aren't alone on the island, and have to press the button once every hour or else a major reaction would be caused and they'd be fucked.

- The hatch reveals that a company called Dharma created the hatch and that there were other hatches.

- Searching the island reveals other hatches and other remnants of other survivors and another group, a hostile one, who are known as nothing more than The Others.

- The Others and the Survivors fight and there's friction amongst both groups.

- Charles Widmore sends people to the island to investigate and kill everyone there.

- Some manage to leave the island, a group known as Oceanic Six. Others stay, and activate a time wheel that takes them back in time and various time periods jumping, jumping, jumping due to the instability of the island.

- The Oceanic Six have to go back because they realize they're unfulfilled without the island and have unfinished business there.

- The arrival of the oceanic six creates dual timelines: one in the present, another in the past (in the 70's).

- They work as Dharma agents and eventually try their damndest to stop the drilling of a well that eventually, and a conflict that eventually lands them back in their normal timeline. Or some shit.

- It turns out that Locke, who was thought to be dead, has been revived on the island due to supernatural powers. Those powers being the smoke monster. He uses Locke's body and Ben to kill Jacob so he can do like, bad stuff?

- Story goes from pseudo science and science fiction to spiritual. Looming "war" is teased.

- Season 6 shows an alternate universe which is disclosed in the finale as purgatory. The characters are there because they are incapable of moving on to Heaven.

- Bunch of stupid shit

- Show ends with Yer all dead, come on up to heaven - except the black people! You don't count!

How exactly did a show about pseudo science and sci fi tropes turn into a show about religion, spirituality and heaven? The whole thing makes me want to rewatch the show, but I have a feeling I'd regret it.

Am I missing anything?

Just musing these thoughts in my head have convinced me that Lost is possibly one of the most convoluted and obtuse stories I've ever had the courtesy of enduring. @_@

all the island stuff was "real" and happened, the sideways world is just where everyone went as they died, whenever that was, but that doesn't matter because they'll all look exactly as they did during the show

and i would argue that miles and frank were more important than boone and shannon and should have been at the hallelujah party with everyone else, considering they were with the group longer and played an important part in getting the skeleton crew of survivors off the island

I'm not going to go into much detail because I seem to be on the losing side of this battle, but I enjoyed the ending.  I thought it was well done.

As far as the black people thing, it does look suspicious.  Although Rose was there.  And the guy who played Michael was on Jimmy Kimmel earlier and was asked why he didn't make it to "the church."  He did point out that his character's soul was bound to the island for the people he killed there, as was previously said earlier in the season.

We should also account for the actors they couldn't get to return for the finale, which happens all the time, not to mention the fact that some of them have changed, like Walt.  That kid is like 8 feet tall now, and I'm not sure if any of us would recognize him.  If he showed up, everyone would be asking what Kobe Bryant was doing in the finale.

Uh they never came out and said it was straight up purgatory. I guess you could perceive it as such.  For me I think it was just to all be symbolic that they all successfully made it through and could finally forget the island once and for all.  The only things that bothered me were the MiB basically being offed with no resolution to his foibles and  Christian being revived.

The more I think about it the more I like the ending. I didnt perceive them as being in purgatory and moving on to heaven at the end though.  The blinding light coming through the doors was just symbolic pap you would expect from a series finale.  They were moving on or "leaving" the entanglement of the island.  They still had their families new and coming to care for (locke and helen, the kwons and their baby).  They simply had "created" a refuge for themselves by taking control of their destiny and setting off the hydrogen bomb in the first place.  Ben wasnt ready to let go because he obviously still had some attachment to the previous life through Alex.

Many things still don't sit right with me of course.  It seems hundreds of others and red shirt passengers had to die for this select group to live a life they wanted.  Many of previously important characters were outright neglected (would it have been hard to have Eko and his brother to find absolution in some small cameo?).  MiB imo was no real threat if he had escaped because he had lost his powers upon the island destructing, so in a way he was a tragic character who was jerked around by Jacob and never got his simple wish to leave.  Christian resurrecting was kinda irksome too because I don't see what importance it was.  It was like Jack is being rewarded for not letting go even though he was instructed to do so at the very end.

Standalone, the season 6 itself was above average- not great, but as a sendoff to the earlier seasons its not so egrerious in the larger context.

i felt like it was just sort of a copout, spending five years building up mysteries and emphasizing how important they were, only to flat out tell you "none of this matters" and "just let go" at the very end

like i said, i'll pretend the show ended with season 5 and "it worked" really meant something other than just being able to wrangle a candy bar out of a machine

i won't be investing any more of my time in cuse or lindelof's future projects, though

Where else might they be if they're all dead?

I choose not to interpret that so literally. Jack said 'Oh I died didnt I'.  Yes they all died at some point in the alternate timeline.  They were given a new lease on life in the end enriched by their experiences of all the bullshit they had to put up with before.  Like I said, what doesnt sit right with me though is Christian coming back to life at all.  I don't even feel like it added anything really other than showcasing an iconic character of the show  once more.

Despite my many gripes with the series it ended better than I hoped and I really don't think I woulda appreciated Faraday/Jacob/whoever monolouging the island's secrets like they tried to do in "The Lighthouse"

They stated a few episodes before The End that there was going to be a focus on characters, basically prepping for the fallout of not answering anything. I can understand being focused on the main characters and I like how The End brought everyone back together but I'm also in agreement with it being a huge copout to not answer anything. All the mysteries just snowballed and if you can't tackle them at a certain point then they shouldn't have been introduced in the first place.

And yes, the commercials were fucking excruciating.  I dunno, I guess I expected some hugely advertised event like this to have some more screentime for one last attempt to resolve things effectively.

I like how EmCeeGrammar chose not to perceive the ending the way, uh, everyone did. I also choose to perceive the series did not end so horribly, and will construct my own reality to do so.

They were all joke endings, but ironically better than the actual ending.
