I also finished one chapter every two days. Finishing more than one chapter at a time is really too much.
Games can't entertain me for longer than two hours. I really get bored by a game when I play it for longer than two hours.  :-\

And I really can't wait for the sequel. I hope MS will fund a whole trilogy.

Hoping that Barry dies a slow and painful death during the first scene of the next game.

I finished this up yesterday.

Overall I enjoyed it. Mainly because I think their execution on theme and story and horror was well done and I'm a massive horror fan in general. If I was less of a fan of the genre I think I would probably like the game a good deal less in much the same way that I was never much of a Max Payne fan.

Like I said the best thing about the game is the atmosphere and tone. When you are out walking in the woods and you are not sure of what is going to happen next, the game works really well. When they set up some of the scripted little set pieces the game also works extremely well.

Where the game is less enjoyable is when it sort of focuses on the combat too much. There are times where I wish it was more adventure game rather than action game simply because the combat isn't varied very much. I mean they try to pace it differently and set it up differently but essentially it all feels the same and ther isn't much variety to the tactics. You've seen everything the game has to offer combat wise by Chapter 2 but you still keep on doing the same stuff to the same enemies for the entire game.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying the game shouldn't have combat. It should. I just think the game as a whole would function better with a slightly lesser balance on combat and raise the puzzle solving, environment exploring aspect of the game more.

On the whole though I enjoyed it and was compelled to finish it which doesn't always happen for me. There is sort of an artsy and at times adult element going on here that I like. I think Microsoft is in sort of an interesting/weird spot here. This game definitely is not a "blockbuster" in the sales sense of the word. The game really has more niche appeal than anything. It's not something I can see the mainstream of consumers who buy games really liking too much. So I'm curious to see whether they fund the next game. I think one of the things MS drops the ball on in comparison to Sony is that they really feel every game they make (publish) has to be a sales blockbuster. If it isn't they quickly tend to cut it. I think that is a bit short sighted. I think a console needs a wider portfolio of games than just the big hits.

went back to deadly premonition, and its tragic how much better dp seems after alan wake

dp has actual characters and a plot that isn't an "homage" to the worst of the genre, and is so wonderfully insane i'm willing to endure its terrible camera and controls to find out what happens next -- which in a survival/adventure game, is absolutely essential

the second chapter (of dp) cutscene where they find the body of the raincoat killer's second victim was leaps more impactful and "artistic" than any moment in alan wake's graphically superior suite of canned moments

alan wake was a pretty romp and very polished in the gameplay bits -- can't say the same for the terrible cutscenes -- but it was glued together with a sort of anti-vision -- a facile mashup of cliches, focus group input, audience overthink, and generally narrow perspective on the genre. dp may be ugly as sin and control like a neurological disorder, but DAMN if it isn't an original, engaging, and really well-considered horror-esque experience. francis york morgan is probably the best protagonist in any game ever.

I think false expectations led to disappointments, if anything.  The story and writing was the same hokey stuff from Max Payne and I went into it knowing it was a linear shooter type game.  The only thing I didn't expect was the poor pacing and just how much combat was a focus, otherwise, it met my moderate expectations.  Granted, I didn't see the brightfall (those live action prequel videos) until after I finished and it does have a very different tone from the actual game.

"Logic is such a liar." -- actual line from the Max Payne games

The writing in the Max Payne games read as what it was - a European guy unsuccessfully trying to ape Dashiell Hammett and Raymond Chandler.  I imagine Alan Wake's writing reads as what it is - that same European guy trying to ape Stephen King.

What does Bright Falls have to do with the game anyways besides sharing some characters? Is it just showing how one gets consumed by the darkness?

The Twin Peaks connection never really came through outside of the notion that it is a TV show. The major and consistent and clear influence all the way throughout clearly was Stephen King.

I was going to mention her but decided not to because one crazy lady in and of itself doesn't really point to a wholesale notion of Twin Peaks. Crazy old weird lady in town is equally as common in a Stephen King novel.

I definitely heard Twin Peaks referenced a lot in relation to Alan Wake before the game came out. Sometimes from Remedy I think and sometimes from journalists. What I'm saying is that for the most part it really doesn't exist too much in the actual game. At least for the signature weirdness Twin Peaks is known for. In that sense DP is much more clearly and directly referencing Twin Peaks.

It seemed like a weird blend of Twin Peaks and Stephen King/Dean Koontz pulp to me (I've read my fair share of both). There was obviously someone on the writing staff that had read The Dark Half.

She's called Lamp Lady, in twin Peaks she's called Log Lady. They both hold a lamp like that. They both share the major plot device to their story.

They've announced a third chapter DLC for this btw.

http://www.vg247.com/2010/06/03/alan-wake-dlc-pack-3-hitting-later-this-year/

Hopefully these are real chapter length DLC rather than just 20 minute DLC fluff.

And hopefully they aren't like the last chapter in the game proper which was the worst chapter imo.

DLC pricing

Quote
Remedy's imperiled author sim, Alan Wake, will be extended in two downloadable episodes later this year, with the first set to launch on July 27th. Entitled "The Signal," the first add-on is available free to players who purchased the game new. We met up with Remedy's Head of Franchise Development, Oskari Hakkinen, and ascertained that the episode -- which should last around 90 minutes -- will cost 560 MS Points ($7) on the Xbox Live Marketplace to those who purchased the game sans shrinkwrap.

The second downloadable episode, "The Writer," will also cost 560 MS points ($7). According to Hakkinen, the $10 price seen within Alan Wake's DLC menu was meant to be a placeholder.

perhaps with more enemy designs like a dog or something this can be achieved in alan wake, the enemies here are basically shooting or flashlight practice.

instead of the tornado, maybe something like RE3's Nemesis that chases you on numerous occasions.
