I think Borys knows what's up.  When I was in the middle of playing FFXII it was the best game ever.

Eventually he'll finish it and wake up and realize the last chunk of the game is awful and has major repercussions on the quality of the game as a whole.  Maybe he'll even realize that when he gets to the tower.  But for now let him enjoy the game because until you get to that point it is the best rpg on PS2.

I've always felt that FF12 was a step in the right direction even if it did mistep in some ways. Thematically it was very appealing. Sadly Square seems to have done the opposite for FF13 which I don't think is the best decision considering the large threat to their (former) console RPG dominance.

What do you actually think of the music in this game?
My favorite track in the game:

Star Wars music owned.

Tough to top the Giza Plains music imo. I also liked the Rabanastre theme, Dalmasca Easterland and the Sandsea music. Good luck with the Hunts Borys I never finished them because of the one in the foggy area that you have to spawn by killing everything in two zones. I never could get that one to work :/

If there were 2 things I greatly enjoyed about FFXII, it was the world design and the music. Sakimoto is definitely one of my fave game composers.

FFXII music really gets better with time. I didn't  like the OST while playing the game. But after finishing the game and listening to the OST, it had some amazing tracks on it.
The music is so different than the previous FF games. The theme of the soundtrack is pretty constant, and some might find it boring, but I think it's beautiful music.

The only thing I can't stand about FF12 is the gameplay. Why would Square trade out what was basically perfect turn-based gameplay in FFX for single-player MMO bullshit?

They tried something new I guess. And this type of gameplay speeds up the game tremendously.

I remember a thread on GAF expressing precisely the opposite. That the gameplay padded the game length.

The gameplay itself didn't pad the length.

The meandering story padded the length.

For example, the journey to the empire is butt fucking distinguished mentally-challenged. Yeah, let's make the player go through 4-5 dungeons before reaching the Empire, and force a stupid fetch quest when they finally get there to top it off!

That's terrible pacing. Terrible.

As for the battle system speed itself. It is pretty fast, but not in the way Borys means it. Other rpgs are faster, even FFX-2 in terms of quickness. He means user input; it's not so much that it's fast, but less tedious. I'll admit, inputing attack -> attack can get tiresome at times, but FFXII lets you do that and concentrate on other things through gambits. I used to hate the idea of gambits, but by end game, I learned to love em.

Personally I just loved FFX's system and it's hard to forget how much right there was. It's cool that SE wanted to do something new, but X's system was literally the perfect evolution of the turn-based battle system. The move schedule, the menu navigation, the general speed and presentation of the battles, it was flawless.

My problem with FF10 is that you fight 1-3 enemies per battle, tops. And almost always the same variant too. It'll always that damn giant bird for Wakka to kill, or the wolf for Tidus to kill, or the Flan for Lulu to kill, or the big dragon for Auron to kill, or the treasure chest for Rikku to fuck with a screwdriver, or a giant monster for Yuna to pull a summon out against.

Always.

Good basics (like the things you mentioned), but when almost every single non-boss battle is detailed like above, who gives a crap?

Great boss battles though.

I definitely agree with this, but the last time I played FFX it was hot off the heels of WoW, so the monotony was lost on me.

I have the same problem with almost every 3d FF, though, X-2 and 12 aside. Those games have such great variety in terms of enemies, and 12 has the best damn enemy encounter system I've seen in a 3d jrpg. Fighting up to 6-10 enemies at once regularly?

Sign me the fuck up.

I always loved how in the old 2d games, you'd always fight 6 or 9 enemies at once. Sometimes 3, maybe 1; but that was so rare. But in the 3d FF's that happens ALL THE TIME. But in FF12, it's back to large enemy numbers. I like the idea of being against all odds in rpg battles. I can't stand fighting only a few enemies. I HAVE to feel like I'm going up against an army.

I never put that much stock in the battles. The boss encounters are much more important to me, but the random encounters I just kind of sleep through.

Quickenings are good but summons are useful once to see them and then never again.  I hope with FFXV they just go back to having two dozen summon spells with amazing animations of universes exploding and all that crazy shit.

When you guys complained about the story falling apart later on, are you being influenced by the long stretches of gameplay without any story/cutscenes?  I haven't played the game but I've watched all the cutscenes back to back on Youtube.  Viewed that way, it comes off as fairly cohesive and reasonably well-paced IMO.  There seemed to be some weird lacunae in the story but it didn't strike me as going off the rails or anything (well, the actual "ending" ending did suck.  everything up to there was fine, though.)

Yes. Once you're ways into the game, the story devolves into a fetch quest and "Sorry Mario, the princess is in another castle!" You can tell Matsuno did not write this at all because it's so empty in terms of story and your goals are so thin and not given much thought. It's hard to care about Ashe's plight.

The later part devolves into typical Final Fantasy, which is a stark contrast to the beginning of the game which is more serious in tone, but I still really liked the last part (final boss aside). I enjoyed the sub stories a lot:
spoiler (click to show/hide)
Ashe trying to come to grips with Rasler's "ghost" and being controlled by those spirit guys, Basch and his brother Gabranth, Cid and Balthier, Vaan and Ashe...
[close]

In fact, I think the only really TRULY poor parts are the middle and the ending. The ending is terrible. The middle part is bad because there's so many large stretches; the pacing is truly awful.

Well, my impression was actually that the first half was total Star Wars Adventure, while the second half was more serious and revolved around Ashe's dilemma.  I suspect it's not so much that the story devolves as that there were a bunch of areas that they never finished the story for, sort of Xenogears disc 2 in reverse.

What I enjoyed about the first half was Vaan's part of the story. Stealing from the treasure trove, getting thrown in prison...

But like I said before, the last third is my favorite part of the game.

The problem isn't the beginning nor the end, it's the middle that's bad. Like, there's one part where you're supposed to go to the Empire capital, Archades, and in order to get there you have to go on foot. Thing is, before you get there you have to travel across at least 5-6 different dungeons and areas before you even step foot in the empire. Thankfully, when you get to Archades, the last third of the story starts and the game never lets up after that: Cid's Research Lab -> Feywood -> Giruvegan -> Pharos are so tight in terms of gameplay, dungeons, story, and pacing. If the whole game were like that it'd be my favorite FF.
