Ridley Scott has the weirdest career, he's got some stone-cold classics, a bunch of middling flicks to good/great, and some utter dreck in his resume. I mean, yeah, you can say the same about lots of people who've made great films, but few of those people have something like 1492 or G.I. From what I've seen, European actors are willing to star in anything. Thus you have folks like Michael Caine who will happily do Jaws The Revenge on one hand, and The Quiet American on the other. Same thing with someone like Anthony Hopkins who does Freejack and then turns around and does something like Titus Andronicus.

Max Von Sydow is one of the greats, and I imagine he's proud of his career. You also have to remember that he's an old man, and he's looked like an old man since he was middle-aged. The roles you're offered get kind of limited at that point.

I'm glad folks like von Sydow and Hal Holbrook are still out there working in their 80s, instead of retired like Gene Hackman. I highly doubt they need the money at this point and are obviously just doing it for the love of the craft.

The funny thing about the title change is for a while they really were going to do a medieval Gladiator 2 with Maximus reincarnated. Gladiator 3 would have been Maximus in WWII.
