My roommate is one of the few "young" black christians I know who is hyper religious. Overall I've met way too many who's religion seemed more like something passed down parent to child, sort of like a foundation to stand on during hard times. And while the parents are religious, the kids rarely are.

This was on full effect when I played basketball at a Baptist church. There were maybe 6 black kids at the school and all of us were more "worldly" than the other students. One time one of my best friends on the team brought a Source magazine onto the bus; a half naked Trina was on the cover. We were in the back of the bus looking at it, and some of the white kids were looking too lmao. Then a teacher got on the bus and slowly started walking towards the back of the bus. All the white kids moved back to their seats, as did another black kid and me lmao. My friend sat there with his head in the magazine, totally obvious as the teacher walked right up to him.

"Richard what is that. Is that pornography?"
"no sir..."
"Where did you get this filth?"
"I found it on the bus..."
"Yea, right. That'll be 100 demerits"

One of the funniest things I've ever seen in my life :rofl

They'd constantly get in trouble for talking about movies they had seen, or music they listened to off school grounds.

Wait. This makes no sense. Why would anyone get demerits when it's obviously not a school event?

Dude, during the summer a friend from the school was hanging out with me at the mall. We ran into a teacher at the school. A month later my friend found out he had 50 demerits to start the semester because he had dyed his hair during the summer.

It didn't matter whether you were on school grounds or not. If you went to see movies at the theater, you got demerits.

But you just said:

Quote from: Himuro
I've never really met a hyper religious "I'm all about God!" black person in our age group. There's always the person who puts "God" as their only interest on facebook, but they'll go to a club and get drunk and pick up dudes along the way just a few hours before the choir sings "Going to See the King" early on Sunday.

You're confusing me with your sweeping sociological conclusions based on anecdotal evidence. So are you saying that, by and large, there are no fundamentalist black Christians under 30 years of age? And that most older black people are not as fundamentalist as white people?

Did you ever think about the fact, I don't know, that there are more white people than black people and it is easier to manipulate the media as a vocal white minority versus being a vocal minority of a minority?

No, of course there are fundamentalist blacks under the age of 30. But I've been to numerous black churches, and on the other hand, numerous white church events. It is night and day. Likewise, due to being black I have been exposed to numerous black Christians, especially in the south. And since I hail from the Bible Belt, I've also been given exposure to fundamentalist white Christians.

The media has nothing to do with this. I'm not claiming it as fact, I'm merely stating what I've experienced. It's a pure observation on my part. That doesn't make it true, though, and I never said it was.

But of the young religious blacks I know in contrast to the young religious whites, the blacks tend to be far less dogmatic and extreme.

The funny thing is that it seems to be more socially acceptable to not be religious in the white communities, whereas in the black community if you're religious you are seen as an enigma despite the fact you have drug dealers and the girl with 5 baby daddies on welfare are "religious" and "good people".

I've noticed the same thing within the hispanic communities.

Blacks are the most religious ethnicity in the US, true. But if you're a non-religious person in a religious area, of course you'll stick out, regardless of the race of the person and the area. So I disagree there.

In terms of broad statements I'd have no problem saying a large part of black megachurches are filled with people who only go for the show/environment/family history/etc. Those churches are essentially temples of materialism, and while I respect people who are religious I have no respect for the leaders of those churches, who basically leech off their congregation. Especially the older members, like my grandmothers.

I don't go to church unless I have to. That being said, I have bible class at my parents house almost every sunday. Mainly because I don't feel like starting a fight. It's odd because my parents are having trouble with my two youngest brothers, and they seem to think bible class is going to help. They just seem completely out of touch. But at the same time my brothers are complete assholes and rather ungrateful. I was an ass when I was younger, but I realized there were certain things I had to do to get by, whether it was doing my chores or not starting a fight over church. They won't even do those small things consistently, and everytime I go to my parents house I witness multiple arguments or petty verbal sniping that would have resulted in my death if I tried that shit 10 years ago. Truly pisses me off, especially considering my mom isn't healthy and them constantly teaming up on her is indefensible.

Judging others doesn't mean you feel you're above them. And making commentary on social issues doesn't mean you're judging others. If you'll notice, its quite frequent that black people make such statements about other blacks. It has nothing to do with "feeling superior" but more so "you can be better than this".

This is hilarious coming from Mandark, the guy who routinely tries to cut into people on a regular basis. Are you going to stalk and google search every Phoenix Dark post again to prove a point?

Such humility, Mandark.

Himuro:  Note that one of us hasn't claimed to be humble, but the one who did insisted on skirting the word filter so he could call people distinguished black fellows.

Himu

  • Senior Member
Because the word filter doesn't help me with my point. Me saying Kanye West acted like a distinguished black fellow doesn't mean I actually think I'm above him nor does it have to do with anything related to humbleness or even humility. I think word filters are stupid, always have, always will. Anyways, you're right I said I'm humble, but that was a direct response to your accusation that I think I'm somehow better than other black people. Honestly, your behavior on the forum is the complete opposite, it seems every time I see you post, you're either bemoaning someone (like this for example) or in some way, making fun of someone because you feel they are of lower intelligence.

Your argument that I feel superior to other blacks is mostly baseless conjecture.

You've said your piece, now argue it.

I understood Himu's point. Yeah talk of 5 baby daddies and welfare reminded me of Bill Cosby, but his point was merely that many black people he knows are religious while their actions suggest otherwise; of course that applies to many people regardless of race, but our convo has been about our experiences with religion in the black community.

My issue with Himuro is that he often appears to be a confused young man when it comes to issues regarding race. Which if I'm giving the benefit of the doubt has to do with his age I suppose. Knowledge is a learning process.

For what its worth the most religious black people I know are rarely drug dealers. Hypocrisy on religion isn't a "black" thing. It's a religion thing. Meaning every single religion on earth is mostly filled with a group of hypocrites.

Himu

  • Senior Member
I seriously have no clue where and how he arrived at that destination based on a discussion that was focused primarily on our own personal experiences with religion in the black community. It's like, what?

In what ways am I confused about race? Most of my arguments are clear and concise and backed by logic and personal experience.

The implication when you insult someone is that you've got the standing to make that judgment.  If I say one of FoC's posts is idiotic, does that mean I think I'm smart enough to make that call?  You bet your sweet sugar it does.

The corollary of "he's a wanker" is "and I'm not".

PS  Nobody on a forum ever says "my arguments are logical" or "I made very rational points" if it's true.  cf Green Shinobi, passim.
