The whole thread was incredibly dumb in the first place. Not the idea of it. It's fine to like those sort of shooters and celebrate them. Invariably though a certain faction (the pc brigade on that board) will always come in and start the usual bullshit that everybody should be playing only Quake on a PC like its the 90's and that's the only real game that counts. And the usual tired keyboard/mouse versus dual analog debate. It's like their still arguing the same shit that nobody cares about.

I always compared that review system to school grades, where things might get graded 1-100 but a 51 is NOT an average score, it's a D-, an average is I think a C, in the 70s.

The best system is actually reading a review and simply just taking it as one opinion among many which you may or may not agree with.

In general the bigger the scale the more bullshit it is though. 4 or 5 star systems are fine. The more you go beyond that the more bullshit it gets because its just there to spout a bunch of nonsense to justify the scale and devalue the actual words.

Then again, thanks to the 5 scale, on netflix I can easily put Josie and the Pussycats on par with Lord of the Rings because I "loved" it, which is a four rating. It's not like I'm saying I enjoy them  nearly the same, but when someone sees that hey! I rated Josie and the Pussycats and Lord of the Rings the same score that means I think they're the same quality or some shit when it's not the case.

Yeah I never run into this issue but then that's because I don't think a scale is supposed to do that. I think a scale is just supposed to say how much you like something generally and then words or conversation are supposed to distinguish how much you like something compared to something else. A scale shouldn't be the end all measure of something.

I like the movie Anchorman. I also like Schindler's List. If I give them both 5 stars that doesn't mean I think they are the same thing quality wise. I'm not sure it even applies there in a comparative sense so why should it for videogames that belong in different genres.

It's a very modern internet phenomenon to try to put everything on this scale of a>b>c>d>e.

It's possible for A>B in some areas while at the same times it's possible for A<B in some areas and often that is far more informative then trying to make some blanket statement like A>B on some universal scale.

Not at all. Someone telling me something is 9.1 or 9.2 or 9.3 or 9.9 is absolutely useless. I have no idea what those distinctions mean. All it is, is an arbitrary attempt to define goodness to a level of specificity that is better established with actual words or at best/worst a top ten end of the year list.

When someone tells me they would give a game a 9.5 as if that is some meaningful distinction, you pretty much get a sense of how little they actually know about criticism.

Hey if it works for you and you get some information out of it that's all that matters. It never works for me. I don't know what tenths of a points mean on a 10 point scale. Especially since its multiple people doing the reviewing.

I don't need some crazy scale but then honestly numbers don't mean anything to me anyway and the more precise somebody gets with their numbers the less it actually means to be personally other than that they are trying to make some very specific distinction that is subjective on a level that doesn't really inform me of much.
