Steam Holiday Deal thread (Last Day - Repeat Sales)
« on: December 23, 2009, 02:21:45 PM »
I feel the Steam Christmas sale it worthy of a separate thread.   You can find a Google spreadsheet of deals here

Bioshock - $4.99
STALKER - $2.00
Killing Floor - $4.99
GTA4 - $7.49

Some good indie stuff I got:

Braid - $2.49
Machinarium - $9.99
Samorost 2 - $2.49
Trine - $7.99

As well as some retail games:
The Witcher EE - $13.59
Sid Meier's Pirates - $6.69

I just watched Master and Commander again this week, so I am ALL ABOUT sailing the salty seas!  :pirate

I think that does me good except for the inevitable daily deals. L4D2 $25 believe!

Yeah, I played the hell out of the original, as well as the PSP version of the remake. Glad to get it for $6 for my netbook.

Anything you'd recommend out of the Bearded Grognard section?

Anything you'd recommend out of the Bearded Grognard section?

Evil Genius for $2 ( one out of five weeks unshaven on the beard-o-meter)
AI War: Fleet Command for $10 ( four out of five weeks unshaven on the beard-o-meter)
Dawn of Discovery for $25 -kinda pricey but really good ( three out of five, game is deceptively deep )
Rome Total War for $2.50 (three out of five since you MUST play with mods for the game to be really good. Europa Baraborum/Rome Total Realism ftw)
Tropico 3 for $20-again pricey but this is a lot of fun (one and a half beards)
Majesty 2 for $15 - (two and a half beards-the game has a high difficultly curve that can border on outright brutal)
Gratuitous Space Battles for $10 (one and a half beards, really neat mix of tower defense and what amounts to creative, multiple solution problem solving)
Ghost Master - $1 - This is a fun, if simple, game. (one beard)

Then there are EU3/HoI3/For the Glory on Steam, all awesome but they are the bearded man equivalent of the things you order at the vietnamese restaurant that intentionally are left off the menu so the unwary don't try them. Though EU3 is pretty palatable if you're willing to read the wiki and forums to get started.

Its actually one in the same, purchasing Time Gentleman, Please gets you BTDT included (which is also pretty dang not bad).

and I too am using this opportunity to pick up Machinarium.  As should everyone.

Also, Defense Grid is the best standalone (read: not a WC3 map) TD game on the PC and it's just $2.50. The Overlord games are good (if a huge waste of a hypertalented team) and are on sale as well.

Are these games like Machinarium or the Time Gentlemen Please pack "experience" style games or do they actually have mechanically strong, coherent yet mind-twisting puzzles? I have a huge pet peeve of games that try to look clever, subversive and "indie" but are bankrupt when it comes to actually, you know, being a game, and both games are giving me that sort of hipster douchebag equivalent vibe.

Machinarium is hipster douchebag for sure, but Time Gentlemen, Please has fun logical puzzles involving Hitler's bloody stool. It is made by adventure game fans for adventure game fans, for sure. It also contains text adventure and SCUMM adventure portions as games-within-the-game.

In fact, I will gift you TGP! Start with TGP, which is a real game. BTDT is more of a my-first indie project.

I also got the Overlord pack over Thanksgiving when it was like $10 for Overlord 1, 2, and expansion. They are good, but like you said, it really feels like the team is intentionally self-handicapping to try to increase the size of their market.

Machinarium has really clever puzzles.  Some are actual puzzles like you press a monitor and a puzzle comes up.  Others are figuring out what goes where.  Machinarium is not hipster at all.  It's actually very cute like this game  :link :zelda

The thing about the Overlord games is that they are done by a studio that made Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic, a complex, yet accessible, fantasy strategy game with all sorts of very wonderful systems that got a lot of praise but never really took off. I play Overlord and think "hey look, this is a cool RTS by some really smart people who sort of held back on a bigger design because they got burned before" despite the fact that Triumph has in its hand one of the better console RTS formulas out there, if they just expanded on it a bit.

If you try out AI War, do the tutorials and don't be encouraged to start the demo game at too low an AI difficulty. The game is much better when you set the AI near the recommended level of 7, or six if you are unsure of your strategy game bona fides.

Deus Ex
Arma

Debating about Stubbs the Zombie and Star Wars Republic Commando. Be nice to have those where I can just download and play.

I'm considering the id pack since I lost my doom 3 cds and wanted to replay it.  Everything else is pretty underwhelming.  This "one EA game a day" thing is lame.  All I want from them is MoH Airborne on sale, which makes sense since they just announced the new MoH.

I enjoyed it. It's just kill, kill, kill, find key, open door, kill some more. The graphics are really nice. I was disappointed that the sound effects are the exact same. The weapons don't have any oomph to them. It's worth $9 bucks, though. Have tried multiplayer yet.

Grabbed Serious Sam, The Void, Nikopol, Culpa Innata, Painkiller Black, Rome Total War, Shadowgrounds pack and Shooter pack.  Probably done with the sale outside daily specials at this point.  Might grab Aquaria on the last day if it doesn't go below 50%.

How was Hinterland?  I know a lot of people bought it back when and it has steam achievements and is ~$7.

Vegas 2 is pretty awesome.  Only problem I have with it so far is that environments all seem brown and beige.  Vegas 1 had cool casinos you fought in and Vegas night streets while Vegas 2 is more the Las Vegas no one cares about, like where people live (I mean, the one people care even less about).
