Nielsen's survey claims the Xbox 360 is the most played console (ranked by share of total usage minutes), taking 23.1% of the measured playtime. Sony's PlayStation 2 netted second with 20.4% and the Nintendo Wii closed up the top three with 19% of the vote.

Oh snap. Girls spend more time on a real man's system than the Wii. They're buying them, just not playing them.

What? You mean either except the status quo here or re-register on GAF under a new nick and hide among the masses like a roach? I'm not down with either, man. My days posting on GAF are done and this is my new home. I doubt the creators of this community wanted this place to be nothing more than a hub for Nintendo-hating lemmings; I'm to assume that it was originally designed to be a loosely moderated forum for all sorts of boisterous fans.

So you're on a quest for reform of what is generally a pretty laid back, dedicated troll forum? Well, good luck on that. Cornelius has gone borderline Green Shinobi on the project, so it looks like you're down one disciple for The Uppity Cause.

Also worth noting here is that there is a reason as to why the Wii is shat on more than any other platform around here. It's not a well liked platform, and no amount of preaching about its grand general appeal and sales dominance is going to change that. That, and it enrages Nintendo fans into sulfurous preaching benders.

By the way, you don't actually know who the "creators" of EB are, do you?

The future of Nintendo is making fat sacks of cash from selling games made in 2007 on hardware that would be acceptable tech in 2000.

The future of Nintendo is making fat sacks of cash from selling games made in 2007 on hardware that would be acceptable tech in 2000.

The Wii mote and Nchuck would have been ahead of their time in 2000, and many experts have stated that the Wii hardware is superior to last gen machines, so the Wii's specs fall in line with the natural progression of console hardware advancement.

It terms of raw horsepower, is it weaker than the PS3 and Xbox 360? Absolutely. However, as a video game console, that does not make it technically inferior to the other two when you pause to consider the fact that some Wii games cannot be executed on the HD consoles. So the playing field, in that regard, is even.

The deciding factor, as always, will be determined by the software. The Wii has the most successful software at this point, some of which will make it to the record books. That said, the Wii's hardware can be perceived as being STRONGER than those of the other two on the basis of its compatibility with great, successful software.

The Wii is on par with the PS2. It's a horrible nightmare to work with and a giant fucking kludge. It's one reason I'm glad at my new job. I don't have to work on it anymore. PS3/360 is so much nicer.

Yeah, I think most of us figured this out when every Wii game released looked worse than GC games and non-shovelware PS2 titles.

I did gameplay programming for Pixar's Up. Not so bad for the Wii in that respect, aside from trying to put in a Wiimotion for cranking and that was a nightmare. (It was before MotionPlus)

On Spongebob's Truth or Square I added support for the Classic Controller and GameCube controller and... OH MY GOD, I wanted to kill myself. To add the TRCs for the menu and just have all the switching work and show the proper buttons and certain checks... *barf*
Mainly it was how on the GameCube controller ports we AREN'T allowed to detect controller disconnects because of how flaky the Wavebird can be. Shit like that. Also making sure the analog triggers felt right, disabling sound on the Wiimote when using the classic controller, and only let you control the Home Menu with those controllers if you actually called it up from that. The documentation was a nightmare. (And I had to deal with fixing In-game XMB issues on the PS3 for Up, so it wasn't new to me)

Seriously, if Nintendo wants to make their games better, they can start by making actual APIs and not requiring us to access low level shit and code around their apps to FAKE looking like it's all one cohesive system.

Well, Nintendo manages to make polished and successful games with the same hardware that had troubled you, so perhaps the real issue isn't with the machine?

I think they know that the grandmas and soccer moms might move on even within the timespan of the Wii itself, which is why we're getting Mario Galaxy 2 and Metroid.  That isn't a whole hell of a lot but it is a sign that Nintendo wants to bring some more of their alienated base back.

Isn't the Wii basically a Gamecube Turbo? Why should it be so hard to develop for the system? The devtools are almost 10 years old.

I think Nintendo gets a little too much flak for doing whats profitable.  If you want to compare internal development between the big three, only Sony has made any effort on their part to make core games consistently.  I think what it comes down to as that the few new things Nintendo did last gen like Pikmin or Drill Dozer where either slightly successful or downright bombs, so they decided to study the market.  They concluded accessible controls and nongames were what it would take to be relevant.  And with surgical precision they made games that sold astronomically well.  The newest one being Tomadachi Collection.  My only real beef with them is that they aren't marketing some of the gamer games.  Excitebots received zero promotion.  Captain Rainbow and Disaster (while both probably mediocre) also didn't receive adequate marketing.  They all bombed.

Yeah. GameCube was easier than PS2, but that's all relative. It doesn't help that the Wii is using the same old dev tools that the GameCube used, just heavily hacked, while the Sony and MS IDEs got heavily updated.

As far as I know, you can still only set ONE SINGLE Data breakpoint on the Wii at a time. I believe that may have finally been upgraded recently.
